#258,210 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I had to get this version for a course I'm taking, or I'd just as well have gotten a $.99 version (or a free one) first.[This is for the Kindle edition.] Good read, but apparently never checked for spelling errors prior to publication (I just finished a quick once-through and caught nearly a dozen). The preface by C.S. Lewis is worth the cost of the book, for any Lewis fans. Actually, the prefatory material takes up more than the actual treatise, and it's all worth reading. Minus one star for poor spell checking, and one star for lacking page numbers in the Kindle edition. Otherwise 10 stars out of five.Interesting arguments for Jesus' divinity. Not sure they'd fly as apologetics today, but as a sermon they work well. Of course, this work influenced pretty much everything after it, so don't take my superficial first impression as the last word - even I mean to re-read and cogitate for a while before making up my mind.

Athanasius may not have believed that Jesus had a human soul, but his reasons for the Incarnation are incredibly simple and profound. This book is a great resource for scholarly work, as the Introduction by John Behr gives you a great summary of "Against the Gentiles", which is a Part 1 of sorts. The book itself is about 100 pages, with introductions comprising half that. Short and simple read! A must-have for any theologian's bookshelf!

Excellent translation of this classic work!

The Church Fathers are each excellent resources for understanding the early years of the growth of Christian Faith.

One of the best reads. The translation is superb.

Great service. Product delivered as described.

Myself

Very good!

Title: Pioneer's kin writes history of aviation in cityAuthor: Steve DoylePublisher: The Huntsville TimesDate: 2/15/10Author descended from designer of state's 1st airplane As a great-grandson of the man who designed Alabama's first airplane, Gary Wicks is understandably fascinated by aviation history. The NASA retiree has parlayed that interest into a new book, "Images of Aviation: Huntsville Air and Space" ($21.99, Arcadia Publishing). Due to go on sale next week, the 128-page paperback is an illustrated history of this area's high-flying ways. Wicks, 72, said the book grew out of his desire to write a biography of his great-grandfather, William Lafayette Quick. Around 1900, the New Market blacksmith and his sons began building a "flying machine" in the family's workshop. The Wright Brothers got all the glory for reaching the skies first, but Quick wasn't far behind. In April 1908, his plane left the ground briefly, then jerked to the right and crashed near the Flint River. Despite the bumpy ending, it is considered the first successful flight in Alabama. The plane is on display at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center's Davidson Center for Space Exploration. Wicks' book also delves into the mostly forgotten story of Huntsville's early airports, including a grass landing strip near Whitesburg Drive and the old airport in present-day John Hunt Park. With a rickety wooden shanty for a terminal, the old airport wasn't much to look at. But by November 1944, locals could take to the skies in a gleaming DC-3 operated by Pennsylvania Central Airline. Wicks dug up two pictures from the inaugural commercial flight, including Susie Spragins christening the plane with water from Big Spring and jeweler J.B. Hill climbing aboard as the first passenger. "I feel like I kind of nailed down some history for the city," Wicks said Friday. "It was excruciatingly slow and painful to get an airport going. Really, it was NASA and the military expansion that forced the city fathers into the airport business." The second half of the book is devoted to Huntsville's quest for outer space. Wicks borrowed dozens of images - some obscure, some well known - from his former employer, Marshall Space Flight Center, plus the Army Aviation and Missile Command. One memorable photo from Jan. 31, 1958, shows then-Huntsville Mayor R.B. Searcy and others lighting firecrackers in the street to celebrate the launch of the Explorer 1 satellite. Wicks said he expects Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million, among others, to carry the book. It is also available through his publisher's Web site, www.arcadiapublishing.com.

#192 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Being that I was experiencing a particularly difficult time in my child's life (or in mine, depending on your perspective) - the so-called terrible twos - I was hoping that this book might have some magic answers. It doesn't. It basically covers the same ground as other parenting books, a combination of, say, Lise Eliot, and the Happiest Toddler on the Block. The suggestions are hard to implement, as acknowledged by the author, when you have been so pushed to the edge by sleeplessness and tantrums so as to have become a toddler yourself. What I did like about the book were the cartoons and pictures, and the fact that it covers all ages and stages, so I can see myself returning to it. However, the techniques were spread across all ages all the time, so it was harder to focus in on what might be appropriate for me and my child at this very moment.Overall, I like the general ideas/principles behind the book, but I'm not sure that it stands out in the field of parenting books based on similar research.

This book is part of the "Brain Balance" predatory pop neuroscience being marketed to overwhelmed parents of challenging children. It was recommended by a child behavioral psychologist who told me she recommends it to all parents, and I'm disappointed that she thinks this book could ever be helpful. I hoped that, after the introduction, there would be practical advice that worked, even if the fake science used to describe it was bunk. Unfortunately not the case. If you wade through the (uncited) fake science, the unprofessional, awkward cartoon illustrations, and the little vignettes of parenting challenges (which are described but unsresolved), you get . . . nothing. This is a slick package without a product inside.I'm also a desperate parent, looking for a lifeline. There's no lifeline here; just lies: page after page of line drawings showing hands and houses to illustrate the crock ideas of "upstairs and downstairs brains" and "left brains and right brains." It's fine to discuss and classify human behaviors and interests using the left/right concept as a metaphor, but don't sell us a miracle cure for a problem that isn't real. Brain "de-integration" is not the cause of challenging childhood behaviors, and while it's nice to think that we could buy a book that fixes our children's brains, it's not that easy. You want the entirety of the book's advice?-When your kid is on the verge of a tantrum, don't try to shut them down with a rational explanation of why they shouldn't be throwing a tantrum. Let them have their feelings, and work from thereThat's it. The entire book. More helpful books that start with that tidbit and give evidence-based advice are Ross Greene's "The Explosive Child," Jim and Charles Fay's "Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood," and Alan E. Kazdin's "The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child." None of which have worked a miracle in my child's behavior, but they have each, in their own way, helped me to adjust my parenting and lower my stress level as we progress through our new normal. "The Whole-Brain Child" is marketed to the same audience, but has nothing to offer.

So important! I have 6 kids and am assistant director at a Daycare and this is INVALUABLE! Understanding how the brain works from a psychology standpoint in a way that helps anyone to get it is so great. I got the audible version, the hard copy and the workbook and am putting the material together to teach the teachers at our center along with Parent Effectiveness Training and The how to talk series. This is a life changer and It has given me some tools to help some autistic kids in our center as well as understand myself and other adults I know!

I think overall this is a good book, however most of the information (at least for me) was common sense/ information I was already aware of. I was a little disappointed, I would recommend this book if you have never been around children/ totally new to dealing with kids otherwise I think there are better options out there.

This is such an eye-opening book that explains why children act the way that they do, and what is going on in their brains during the process. I have printed out the helpful "Refridgerator sheet" at the end of the book and hung it on my fridge. We view it often to remind ourselves of the most healthy ways to handle and guide our 2-year-old. As a parent who refuses to spank as a form of discipline, this gives me so many other safe, and healthy alternatives. Also, and most importantly, this helps me to understand how her brain works, and why she acts a certain way, or why she is unable to act in other ways. I believe that if I stick to the advice and practices in this book, that my daughter and I will have a stronger and healthier relationship.

Seriously love this book. My daughter is 16 months old and there was a lot of very usually information for a child her age. I wish I had read this when she was first born in order to anticipate changes in her behavior and how to handle them rather than waiting until we realized we had a child that actually needed a little more than food and sleep and cuddles and diaper changes. I can see this being a useful book to revisit every few years as she grows. I learned some about myself and my husband while reading this as well. Very accessible and well written, really can't recommend it enough.

I am still reading the book however I thought i’d write a review since it could be useful for other parents. The book is very easy to read and understand a concepts, I love that it gives real life examples and solutions on how to approach your kids, as a parent of 3 I could relate to quite a few stories in the book. I am happy with the purchase and can’t wait to finish the book and apply the concepts in real life.

I come to this work as a non-Catholic. I've listened to Timothy Gallagher on YouTube. He has a whole series on the work of St Ignatius. I wish that I had exposure to these rules of spiritual discernment of spirits. It would have made my experience with the Spiritual Path more clear and less flying by the seat of my pants and my heart for grace. Gallagher beings these early yet contemporary teaching on spiritual discernment into contemporary language. But more importantly, he brings to them a clarity of purpose and knowledge of one who is clearly doing his work and staying live to the subject. I especially like the Reader's guide, which I usually dislike in many writings. This has the power to underscore what needs to be underscored and applied as you actually live, not as you want to be seen by the teacher.

Discernment of Spirits is good book for anyone looking to learn about Ignatius' 14 rules on the discernment spirits. Each chapter is dedicated to discussing each rule. First the rule is stated as it was written by Ignatius and then the rule is discussed in a practical sense. Each rule is further illustrated by an example or two to provide a deeper clarity into how the rule can apply to the discerner's life. The only drawback is that this reading this book is similar to reading a manual, which leaves it a little dry and slow at times. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn more about the discernment of spirits. It's worth the price, but you probably won't read it more than once. Rather you may end up using it as a reference source after your first reading.

I would recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!! I wish I had read it many years ago. I am on my second read through it. I hope to read it a 3rd time too!!! it has a fairy high level vocabulary level though... I have had to look up a lot of words to find out what they mean...

Nice to read Ignatius' rules of Spiritual Discernment interpreted for modern language and usage. I had read his Spiritual Exercises, and got lost in the time and distance of language and times. Since so many use his writings for retreats, direction and spiritual direction, it is good for me as a spiritual director and man of prayer to be versed in his methods along with so many of the other masters on the life of prayer in the Christian perspective.

The name of the book "The Discernment of Spirits" is also the name of a seminar given by Father Timothy M. Gallagher, O.M.V. throughout the country. I attended one of these in Boston. I helped organize one in New York after also reading this book. In both, Father Gallagher described how Saint Ignatius of Loyola was able to judge his experiences and tell apart those which he believed originating from "the enemy" and those from the "good spirit." Becoming "aware" of differing experiences, "worldly" and "sacred," both causing delight, both taking a strong "hold on his heart," he came to recognize, little by little, whether these things that moved him were from the "bad spirit" or from "God." So absorbed was he in his thinking, that it took a special moment of grace, where "his eyes were opened a little" and he was able to see and marvel at the difference, where the one experience would leave him "sad" and the other "happy." From his "awareness," he was able to come to an "understanding" of what was happening. From this, he was able learn to "take action," accepting the "sacred" as from God and the "worldly" as from "the enemy." Saint Ignatius was later able to describe the actions of the "bad spirit" as ones that "bite, sadden, and place obstacles, disquieting with false reasons, so that the person may not go forward." On the contrary, he was able to see the movement of God as giving "courage and strength, consolations, tears, inspirations and quiet, easing and taking away all obstacles, so that the person may go forward in doing good." Father Gallagher gives these seminars, and no doubt wrote this book, as "a help" from the teachings of Saint Ignatius, "for everyday living." He said this "applied to persons of every walk of life and vocation." Accordingly, he used examples from the experiences of everyday people. Growing in the "Spiritual Life" can be exhilarating. It can also have its difficulties. If we sincerely attempt to advance spiritually, i.e., to seek union with God, Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., in his book "Spiritual Passages," insists that spiritual direction (of some kind) is necessary if we are to avoid dangers present in living and advancing in the spiritual life. For instance, he tells us that as we grow in the spiritual life, "we expose more and more of our real being with ... its power and potential for good or ill." Because personal honesty and consistency is necessary on our part, the infused virtues (faith, hope, and charity), and their growth, become extremely important and necessary for our own "inner balance" as we look into our own soul and the hidden unconscious, which may contain very disturbing elements. Using a quote from Archbishop Fénelon, he gives us a look at how our dark side can appear while advancing spiritually:------------------------------------------------------------------ As light increases, we see ourselves to be worse than we thought. We are amazed at our former blindness as we see issuing forth from the depths of our heart a whole swarm of shameful feelings, like filthy reptiles crawling from a hidden cave. We never could have believed that we harbored such things, and we stand aghast as we watch them gradually appear. But we must be neither amazed nor disheartened. We are not worse than we were; on the contrary, we are better. But while our faults diminish, the light by which we see them waxes brighter, and we are filled with horror. Bear in mind, for your own comfort, that we only perceive our malady when the cure begins. So long as there is no sign of cure, we are unconscious of the depth of our disease; we are in a state of blind presumption and hardness; the prey of self-delusion. While we go with the stream, we are unconscious of its rapid course; but when we begin to stem it ever so little, it makes itself felt.------------------------------------------------------------------ We, therefore, need "helps." We need the wisdom of experience--of a mentor--to help us through some of what can be very the confusing aspects of growth. Father Benedict insists that, "when the dark recesses of our spirit become manifest, we especially need at least a friend to share our fears, and assure us that ours is not an uncommon experience." Although a personal Spiritual Director might be the answer here, not everyone has the good fortune of finding and having access to one. There are other ways, however, that this wisdom can be sought, found, and put to use. I believe that Father Gallagher has done a great service to the Church and to those who are striving to practice the Spiritual Life. In this book we come to know the mind of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and how he learned that he could put his own inward experiences to the test to see if they were coming from God or not--to resolve his own perplexities. He taught this to his contemporary followers. He can teach us too. He can be that friend that will assure us that ours is not an uncommon experience. He can speak to us and teach us through this book which Father Gallagher so masterfully put together for us. Bottom line: if we can discern God's action in our lives, we can learn to do God's will!
