The book is written from the experiences of a confirmed abolitionist who helped escort escaped slaves to freedom by means of the underground railroad. The descriptions he gives makes one know of the desperation and panic the slaves felt in their dash for freedom from the lash. It also details the heroics of other persons who assisted the fugitives: such as the captain of a ship that happened to be carrying several slaves. The ship was stopped and searched by men trying to recapture the runaways. They thrust swords into hay that was stored on the boat but found nothing. Then they took an axe to several places on the deck but still found nothing. The captain of the vessel bluffed them by grabbing the axe and demanding they tell him where they wanted to search and he would use the axe. He then hit the deck with such force the men backed off and after making him pay the travel tax, let hum go. When he arrived at his destination he freed his grateful cargo from their hiding place. The retelling of the horrors these people from their own mouths cannot be equaled by stories handed down from book to book. I prefer my historical research to be done from resources written as closely to the actual occurrences as possible because as so often happens, one present day author of a book will make an assumption and state it: then someone else perpetuates that inaccuracy because "they saw it in a book, so it must be true".. As an historical researcher, if I can't verify it for myself, I won't use it. This book is from the actual participants. It is a welcome addition to my research resources.

This is a riveting read with descriptive details about people who broke away from their chains of slavery and made their way, often with help from people who were part of the elusive "underground railroad", to a life of freedom in Canada. It is both heart rending that any human being could be subjected to the horrors of slavery - sometimes with horrible brutality used to "keep them in line", and uplifting that so many managed to escape. It is incredible that anyone who is part of the human race could and would treat other humans in such despicable ways - and justify themselves in doing so. It is also heart warming that a segment of the northern states population were sympathetic to their cause, and enabled them to be free human beings for the rest of their lives.

A wonderful compilation of personal accounts of runaway slaves that passed through the shelter of William Still, son of slaves and an important cog in assisting those who had escaped slavery. This is an extremely important collection because it was first printed after the Civil War and before Reconstruction-otherwise it may have been lost-this is a reprinting. Bad masters/mistresses, okay masters/mistresses, these people just wanted to be free, but aside from the dangers, they had to possibly leave behind elders who needed them, dependent children, ailing spouses, etc. You will learn a lot from this read!

so incredible, like stepping back in time and being on the Underground Railroad. For anyone looking to understand where we are today, and how we got here and learn about the resilience of the human spirit, this book is for you. history buffs will love it too!

Loved it. It was honest, true and tells the REAL STORY of the ABOVE GROUND escape from south to north and some to Canada; some on the frozen Ohio River . The man who kept 1st hand accounts was accurate and truthful and as a result, we have now a real historical account of the scary and risky trips the slaves and families took to be free.

This little gem is exactly as its title says: FIRST HAND narratives. This book is a perfect read for anyone researching that time period whether sixth-grader or thesis writer. Naturally, the spelling and grammar are left as was originally written, spoken by men, women who despite a ban on education, often found the wherewithal to self-teach. Reads like you are THERE!

William Still was very instrumental in helping slaves to run on the Underground RR. He wrote his book in 1872. Anyone interested in Slaves Narratives should read this book. He gives comment on alot of slaves that did not become famous but neverthe less escaped. Nothing can take the place of real live witnesses. This is an excellent book for any ones library of AFrican American History

I have visited underrail road museum in Cincinnati, and bought this after we came back home. Worth reading!!!!

Review

"In Doubt Is Their Product, David Michaels gives a lively and convincing history of how clever public relations has blocked one public health protection after another. The techniques first used to reassure us about tobacco were adapted to reassure us about asbestos, lead, vinyl chloride-and risks to nuclear facilities workers, where Dr. Michaels' experience as the relevant Assistant Secretary of Energy gave him an inside view. And if you're worried about climate change, keep worrying, because the same program is underway there."--Donald Kennedy, Editor-in-Chief, Science"We live in an age of unprecedented disinformation, misinformation, and outright lying by those in power. This important book shows who profits by misleading the public-and who ultimately pays with their health."--Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation"This well-researched book by someone who truly knows the system is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the cozy relationship between industry and regulatory agencies on matters that affect the health and safety of our families and neighbors. The cited examples illustrate how, with the help of irresponsible members of Congress and other public officials, corporate greed can trump any sense of ethics, morality, and human compassion."--Neal Lane, former Science Advisor to President Bill Clinton and former Director of the National Science Foundation"This brave, shocking book exposes the abuse of science by government and industry in ways that endanger the workplace, the home, the water supply, the air quality-in fact, our planet as a whole. David Michaels speaks authoritatively from his firsthand experience as a champion of occupational safety and health. He tells a terrific story."--Dava Sobel, author of Longitude and Galileo's Daughter"In Doubt Is Their Product, David Michaels calls out the corporations you'll recognize them that bankroll lobbyists and unethical scientists to attack factual evidence that their products, such as asbestos, lead, and tobacco, are deadly."--Vanity Fair, Green Issue, May 2008"In Doubt Is Their Product, David Michaels calls out the corporations you'll recognize them that bankroll lobbyists and unethical scientists to attack factual evidence that their products, such as asbestos, lead, and tobacco, are deadly."--Vanity Fair, Green Issue, May 2008"David Michaels has written a powerful, thorough indictment of the way big business has ignored, suppressed or distorted vital scientific evidence to the detriment of the public's health."--NatureFrom Newsweek, 5/12/08 _ That science can be bought is hardly news to anyone who knows about tobacco "scientists." But how pervasive, effective and stealthy this science-for-hire is-as masterfully documented by David Michaels of George Washington University in his new book, "Doubt Is Their Product: How Industry's Assault on Science Threatens Your Health"-will shock anyone who still believes that "science" and "integrity" are soulmates. In studies of how toxic chemicals affect human health, Michaels told me, "It's quite easy to take a positive result [showing harmful effects] and turn it falsely negative. This epidemiological alchemy is used widely." -Sharon BegleyFrom Nature, 6/12/08 _ David Michaels has written a powerful, thorough indictment of the way big business has ignored, suppressed or distorted vital scientific evidence to the detriment of the public's health. Doubt Is Their Product catalogues numerous corporate misdemeanours, especially in the United States, from the criminal neglect of the dangerous nature of asbestos and the lies told by the tobacco industry, to the suppression of adverse findings of deaths caused by the anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx and the increased risk of suicide among teenagers taking selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors for depression. The book concludes with a list of prescriptions for securing better regulation and greater protection for the public, mainly through increased public disclosure of vested interests. -Dick Taverne"The book is a shocking portrayal of the tactics used by corporate America to delay public health and environmental regulation of their products for the sake of profit...It is a must read for anyone interested in public health and environmental protection."--Chemical & Engineering News"...Doubt Is Their Product reminds one of deeper risks that threaten scientific fields and democratic deliberation. ...The scientific community and the public need to be on guard against such abuses; Michaels's history of these events sounds an alert that must not be ignored."--DurrantsOne of Library Journal's top 10 sci-tech books of 2008!Received an Honorable Mention in the Society for Environmental Journalism's 2009 Awards for Reporting on the Environment for the category Rachel Carson Environment Book Award.

With over-all responsibility for making the atomic bomb during World War II, General Leslie R. Groves, head of the U.S. Army Manhattan Project, explained that in 1943, "The most urgent problem was to determine the toxicity of the materials we were using: primarily, uranium and plutonium compounds; the related heavy elements, such as radium, polonium and thorium; and certain accessory process materials, such as fluorine and beryllium. This required the study of the manner in which the materials might be introduced into the body, whether by ingestion, inhalation, skin absorption or in other ways." Beryllium scars the lungs and fluorine attacks the bones. Uranium hexafluoride (UF6) is a compound used in the uranium enrichment process that produces fuel for nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors. The Manhattan Project became the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) 1 January 1947. General Groves worried that worker injury lawsuits would compromise atomic bomb secrecy during World War II. After the war, the AEC worried that lawsuits would jeopardize continued development of nuclear weapons. A secret AEC document, dated 17 April 1947, warned young doctors, "It is desired that no document be released which refers to experiments with humans that might have an adverse effect on public opinion or result in legal suits. Documents covering such field work should be classified 'Secret.'"A 1948 classified document from the AEC’s Insurance Branch states, “We can see the possibility of a shattering effect on the morale of the employees if they became aware that there was substantial reason to question the standards of safety under which they are working. In the hands of labor unions the result of this study would add substance to demands for extra-hazardous pay….[K]nowledge of the results of this study might increase the number of claims of occupational injury due to radiation and place a powerful weapon in the hands of plaintiff’s attorney.”“Like miners’ canaries,” says David Michaels, “workers in the chemical industry are often the first line of exposure to environmental toxins.” During the Cold War, AEC lawyers repeatedly rejected claims of workers who became poisoned as a result of nuclear radiation and exposure to deadly uranium, plutonium, and fluorine. “There is no danger. Therefore you are not sick. Now go back to work!” Michaels explains: “As for the workers in the weapons project, protection from the highest levels of radiation exposure was the primary focus of the government’s concern. Many of the workers were not told the names or hazardous nature of the other materials with which they worked; if they were told, they were prohibited from sharing this information with their spouses and physicians. (To this day, many workers are still not told this information.) If they subsequently became ill, that was just too bad. First the Atomic Energy Commission and then DOE [Department of Energy], hand in hand with their private-sector contractors, systematically denied that working with some of the most hazardous materials ever known had made any workers sick. This was an utterly indefensible position, but boundless resources were expended on its behalf.”The Department of Defense “faced many of the same problems DOE faced - civilian workers who had been exposed to beryllium, radiation, nerve gas, rocket fuel, munitions, and asbestos - and had never addressed any of them.” The Department of Justice had always been successful in shielding the government from liability in worker injury claims.Dr. Michaels, an epidemiologist, writes that lead is “the mother of all industrial poisons” - a neural toxin particularly devastating to the health of children! “The metal is a potent toxin that affects the brain, the kidney, blood, bones, sperm, everything, and it is especially toxic in rapidly growing bodies–that is, infants and young children.”In the 1960s, Herbert Needleman, M.D., a courageous pediatrician at Temple University, discovered a direct correlation between lowered IQ and increased lead content of baby teeth collected from children in North Philadelphia. He got the idea from the 1950s, when strontium 90, a by-product of atomic testing in Utah, became a component in the teeth and skeletons of baby boomers across the USA. AEC researchers harvested organs of plutonium workers and secretly gathered bones of children worldwide to measure radioactive fallout. Dr. Needleman's evidence-based research in the 1960s indicated that "leaded" gasoline exhaust poisoned babies both inside and outside the womb.Lead poisoning was perpetuated in the USA for decades by Robert A. Kehoe, Medical Director of the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation. Dr. Kehoe, the ultimate “mercenary scientist,” gave "scientific cover" for Ethyl, becoming the principal defender of keeping "highly profitable" lead in gasoline, which contributed to the poisoning of millions of American children from 1928 until TEL or tetraethyl lead was outlawed in 1986. Industry-owned research facilities conducted lead studies, usually with pro-lead results. Collaboration with the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was an ideal arrangement because radioactive material, like lead in tetraethyl gasoline, was becoming a component in the bones of exposed U.S. citizens. Kehoe’s research was carefully crafted to benefit industrial sponsors - Ethyl, DuPont, Standard Oil, Pennsalt, etc. - not the health of U.S. citizens. “Thousands of tons of lead were inevitably deposited in the nation’s air, soil, and water!”Formerly with the Manhattan Project, Clair Patterson, a geochemist at Caltech, analyzed core drillings of ice in Greenland and Antarctica, indicating a direct link between the use of tetraethyl lead gasoline and its presence in the polar ice cap. In Polar Regions, atmospheric dust is picked up in snowflakes and as it reaches earth, the ice layer is preserved for thousands of years. Each deposit is an intact record of what was in the air when the snow came down, accumulating “like pages in a book.” With assistance from a U.S. Army Research Group, Patterson measured less lead in the deeper core of older ice indicating concentrations in the environment had increased 350 percent between 1930 and 1965. Dr. Patterson then analyzed two-thousand-year-old Peruvian skeletons and found there was almost no lead in their bones; Americans in the 1970s had three thousand times more lead in their bodies than prehistoric Peruvians.Lead poisoning of children resulting in brain damage and death represents one of the most hideous public health disasters in America. “How Industry’s Assault on Science Threatens Your Health” is well illustrated by the Ethyl Gasoline Corporation’s use of fraudulent science. Incredibly, under oath in 1966, Dr. Robert A. Kehoe told Congress that he and his colleagues at the Kettering Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio "had been looking for 30 years for evidence of bad effects from leaded gasoline in the general population and had found none." Kehoe argued that lead is "normal" in the human body and even recommended, for the sake of progress, elevating the lead level in gasoline. There was, he said, "not the slightest evidence" of harm from airborne lead, and claimed that leaded gasoline posed no risk at all to public health. On a personal note, my father survived the Normandy invasion, but not the practice of medicine after World War II. In a 1947 x-ray report, Lt. J. Russell Davey, Jr., MC, USNR, a 29-year-old radiologist, inadvertently exposed a secret AEC study conducted by Robert A. Kehoe, M.D., monitoring workers exposed to hydrogen fluoride (HF) at the Pennsylvania Salt Company in Easton, PA. HF was manufactured by Pennsalt as an essential component in the separation process that produced uranium hexafluoride for the atomic bomb. Dr. Kehoe and the AEC were determined that exposed Pennsalt workers did not learn that HF was invading their soft tissue and bones. However, a radiologist’s x-ray film provides visual evidence of poisoning and its effect on the skeletal system. “All of the films show osteosclerosis previously described and considered to be as a result of fluoride poisoning…Very truly yours, J. Russell Davey, M.D." Guided by the Hippocratic Oath, Dr. Davey sent x-ray results directly to the Pennsalt plant in Easton, PA rather than the Kettering Laboratory in Ohio, where interpretations were routinely adjusted in order to protect the U.S. nuclear weapons industry from potential lawsuits. The AEC preemptively took the medico-legal position that “fluoride poisoning” rarely occurs in the United States. If plaintiffs were successful with their suits, the U.S. government would be contractually required to reimburse corporate bomb factories. Described by outraged AEC contractors as “the offending radiologist,” Dr. Davey died suddenly in 1948 of undetermined causes.David Michaels should be commended for giving a voice to a generation of poisoned children, downwinders, atomic veterans, uranium miners, and the many U.S. workers poisoned in our weapons factories. In the Clinton administration, he served as Assistant Secretary for Environment, Safety, and Health in the Department of Energy (DOE), the chief safety officer for the nation’s nuclear weapons facilities. Dr. Michaels was the architect of the historic initiative that “made peace with the past,” compensating U.S. nuclear weapons workers for illnesses developed while making or testing atomic weapons.

David Michaels has traveled the honorable path of scientific muckracking, peeling back the lies and distortions that have killed millions in the U.S. for the greater good of shareholder profit. The great improvement of his book, "Doubt is their Product," is that it also lines out a series of concrete solutions with proven examples of ways that agencies can retake the high ground. This book has an important inspirational component and a get-to-work component that activists can use to make the workplace and environment safer. Michaels counsels us on practical means such as ending court sanctioned secrecy, allowing injured workers to sue their employees, develop better compensation systems, and ending pre-emption that harms public policy and public health. The book includes a crucial chapter on concrete ways to improve the regulatory system so that it protects the majority rather than serving as a shield, flack, and apologist for corporate profits. This is a must read for any law school course on administrative law, and for any college course on modern government. Its discussion of the asbestos industry--creator of the global mesothelioma scourge--is particularly apropos. Best of all, the book is well written, thoroughly researched, and righteous while being coolly objective.

I agree with others that this is dense and long, but I think it is well worth reading, even if you skip parts of chapters.I would especially suggest study of:Chapter 13: Daubert: the Most Influential Supreme Court Ruling You've Never Heard OfChapter 14: The Institutionalization of Uncertainty[The Data Access Act (Shelby) and the Data Quality Act]Because:a) The behaviors of some corporations, PR agencies, product defense organizations can get somewhat redundant. Hill & Knowlton created the tactics 50+ years ago and they've been widely employed.b) But the legal issues in these two Chapters represent relatively recent changes in the law with profound effects. They (especially the Data Access Act) are now widely being used to harass climate scientists, for example.

Every voter should read this book. Michaels exposes every trick of industries who use or produce toxic products in their too-often-successful bids to avoid regulation. Is it really worth the money and time they spend? Wouldn't it be cheaper just to find substitute products and protect their workers? In the process of avoiding responsibility, these industries are damaging true scientific analysis for decades to come.David Michaels might be the only person who can present the facts so completely since he was directly involved with many of these situations.

This book does a good job displaying the issues that we have encounter with fear, health issues, and money. The only problem is that the same problem is kind of hit over the head too many times. Really, only the first few chapters are necessary to get the point.

This is a must read book for anyone who wants to understand how our society has digressed into a greedy polluting corporate mess. The author documents and provides a multitude of examples from his real life experiences as Assistant Sec. of DOE. I highly recommend this book and use it myself whenever I want to understand how things work or don't in our government. People say that they fear big government but they need to realize that it's big business that's the threat. If you crave to understand our dlelicate system of checks and balances read this book.

It was convincing that people have existed on Mars at some point and left lots of evidence of "things". What I found distracting is the negative comments about NASA because they HAVE to lie about it to keep their jobs and their heads. Too many have disappeared or strangely committed suicide for revealing the truth. It would serve this author to discover more about WHY it is so hotly denied in the face of obvious evidence to the contrary. Who is forcing men of integrity and solid credentials to lie like schoolboys? That is where the real mystery lies!

Like all of Mike Bara's books, I found Ancient Aliens on Mars to be both interesting and compelling. I look forward to reading any follow-up books he chooses to write that address some of the other Mars mysteries.

Very knowledgeable on the data processing and making it somewhat understandable. Some of the pictures were not easy to see what he was describing. Overall a good read for those of us that are curious. Wish mike wouldn’t slam his detractors so much they have already proved them selves shills for the “man”!!!!

Mike Bara did his usual great job writing this book. If you are new to the subject this book will give you a great insight to some of the things that are going on, and have been going on, with NASA and the Mars projects. All in all a great read.If I had any criticisms at all it would be that Mike used up a portion of the beginning of the book to answer some of his detractors. I feel like these people will always be naysayers rather they are truly disbelievers or a paid shill. To answer them in any way is a waste of a good man's time that could be used to write more wonderful content as found in the rest of this book. So turn the other cheek Mike, and keep the faith as there are many of us on this side of the fence that can actually think for themselves.miket

This is a very interesting book of speculation about Mars based on the evidence. This is a subject I have been interested in all of my life and I was enlightened and excited by the information I read in the book. However, I know that in writing a good review, I will be attacked by trolls who feel the need to sling insults and bizarre accusations at Mr. Bara and anyone who likes his work. I don't think most people enjoy being insulted and challenged by trolls. I certainly don't. I find that sort of activity sad and disgusting and I am ashamed to say that I took down my good review of Ancient Aliens on the Moon because of troll attacks. There are thousands of books on Amazon that speculate on subjects based on evidence and I have purchased many, yet I have never seen anything close to the slings and arrows aimed at this author. It makes me wonder why they protest so much. Hmmm...just saying. In any event, if you are open to the idea that there may have been intelligent life on Mars, this is the book for you. I read it in one night. Couldn't put it down. You might also like the Cydonia books speculating on Mars and our ancient history by the late, great David Flynn. As for the trolls, I won't be reading nasty comments and biting their hooks this time.

the author spends to much time with a dispute with another author over pictures from mars in the beginning of this book, I have my own views on this subject this why I buy these type of books, so I found the beginning rather boring,

Mr. Bara has his enemies, that is for sure. But then again, the nature of his enemies makes Mr. Bara look good. There are many attractions to the planet Mars for us humans, and maybe, there is something unnatural on the planet too. Mr. Bara works hard to explain the possibilities. NASA has had an explicit policy to cover up and hide anything that could suggest exterrestrial contact and observations since its inception in 1959. They will not admit to any UFO or exterrestrial contact, no matter how much evidence is shown to exist or that these events did occur. Only a very foolish person would believe NASA anymore. So maybe, there is something on Mars that is more than just rocks and desert.

I thoroughly enjoyed this publication. A great deal of it I had encountered previously but it is always beneficial and entertaining to have rouge organisations actions bought before the public. The old saying "cameras don't lie" may no longer be factual but people that falsify images for their own opinion or advantage do lie. Good on Mike Bara.

The Calculus Diaries: How Math Can Help You Lose Weight, Win in Vegas, and Survive a Zombie Apocalypse, by Jennifer Ouellette

Review

"If, like me, you love the neatness of calculus but never appreciated its applications or the colourful characters who have used it through history, then these diaries are well worth a read." -New Scientist "In The Calculus Diaries, science writer Jennifer Ouellette makes maths palatable using a mix of humour, anecdote and enticing facts...Using everyday examples, such as petrol mileage and fairground rides, Ouellette makes even complex ideas such as calculus and probability appealing." -Nature "This dash through a daunting discipline bursts with wry wit. Ouellette uses differential equations to model the spread of zombies, and derivatives to craft the perfect diet. Sassy throughout, she reserves special barbs for subprime mortgage holders: "Chances are they weren't doing the math." -Discover "The Calculus Diaries is a great primer for anyone who needs to get over their heebie-jeebies about an upcoming calculus class, or for anyone who's ever wondered how calculus fits into everyday life and wants to be entertained, too!" -Danica McKellar, New York Times bestselling author of Math Doesn't Suck and Hot X: Algebra Exposed "I haven't had this much fun learning math since I watched The Count on 'Sesame Street' when I was three. And the Count never talked about log flumes or zombies. So The Calculus Diaries wins the day." -AJ Jacobs, author of The Know-it-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World "Zombies? Surfing? Gambling? Nobody told me calculus could be like this. To my twelfth-grade math teacher: I demand a do-over!" -Carl Zimmer, author of Parasite Rex and The Tangled Bank: An Introduction to Evolution "Back in the day, when I was close to flunking out of calculus class because I couldn't understand why it was worth my valuable time to actually understand it, I needed someone like Jennifer Ouellette to gently explain how I wrong I was. She's like every English major's dream math teacher: funny, smart, infected with communicable enthusiasm, and she can rock a Buffy reference. In this book, she hastens the day when more people are familiar with an integral function than with Justin Bieber." -Peter Sagal, host, NPR's "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me," and author of The Book of Vice "In this wonderful and compulsively readable book, Jennifer Ouellette finds the signature of mathematics -- and especially calculus, of course -- in the most unexpected places, the gorgeously lunatic architecture of Spain's Antonio Gaudi, the shimmering arc of waves on a beach. Just following her on the journey is the half the fun. But the other half is learning about the natural beauty and elegance of calculations. Ouellette's ever clear and always stimulating voice is a perfect match to the subject - and The Calculus Diaries is a tour de force." -Deborah Blum, author of The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York "As amusing as it is enlightening, The Calculus Diaries is no dry survey of abstractions. It's a guide to everyday life -- to car trips and roller- coaster rides, diet and exercise, mortgages and the housing bubble, even social networking. As Ouellette modestly recounts her own learning curve, she and her husband become characters alongside eccentrics such as Newton and Gaudi and William the Conqueror. Like a great dance teacher, Ouellette steers us so gently we think we're gliding along on our own." -Michael Sims, author of Adam's Navel: A Natural and Cultural History of the Human Form "Jennifer Ouellette's calculus confessional is a delight, and an example of the finest kind of science writing. Her book reveals to its readers the gritty inner workings of the most important idea humans have ever thought. (Yes, calculus is that big: it's all about understanding how things change in space and time, and there just isn't much more important than that.) Ouellette's wit, her elegant wielding of metaphor, and her passion for both math and funky culture produce this crucial insight: every equation tells a story, she says, and she's right, and the tales she tells here will captivate even the most math-phobic." -Tom Levenson, author of Newton and the Counterfeiter "Like the movies Batman Begins, Spider-Man, or Superman, The Calculus Diaries is the story of how an insightful, creative, and hard-working young person acquires superpowers and uses them for the benefit of society. Only this tale is true: Jennifer Ouellette can't fly or spin a web, but she can spin a yarn. The Calculus Diaries documents the author's seduction by mathematics and her conquering of it--Eureka!--to see the world with sharper vision. For too many people math, calculus in particular, is an albatross. But Ouellette reveals math for what it is, a powerful tool for solving problems and the exquisite language we use to describe nature. Reading this book will make you smarter. And more powerful." -Eric Roston, author of The Carbon Age "If you ever thought that math was useless, read this book. Want to survive a zombie attack? Win at craps? Beat a zombie at craps? Well, listen to Jennifer Ouellette. The math she describes might just be your best hope if you don't want your brains to be gobbled by the undead." -Charles Seife, author of Zero: Biography of a Dangerous Idea "A charming and gentle introduction to important mathematical concepts and their relevance to everyday life." -Leonard Mlodinow, author of The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives

On the one hand, the author does a good job of explaining calculus to the layperson, but on the other, she stretches the limits (no pun intended) of where calculus can be used. Certainly calculus explains scientific phenomena, particularly anything dealing with motion, energy, mass, etc. But the author basically assumes that calculus can explain anything that involves the concept of change. Hence, betting and interest. Yes, I know these concepts can be calcula-fied (I do know calculus). But calculus is only remotely applicable to these concepts and has little practical use in dealing with them. The author equates calculus to anything dealing with change, so I suppose we could use calculus to explain Lady Gaga's series of outfits or who Jennifer Anniston will be dating next and the rate at which these changes will occur. When dealing with pure scientific and mathematical concepts, the author is at her best and not over the head of the lay person. The appendix treatment of the basic concepts of calculus is outstanding. But when she stretches its applicability, she loses some credibility. And all of that zombie nonsense was, I supposed, just inserted for humor. The living dead among us and their fans will no doubt appreciate it. Personally, I would have preferred some Mr. Spock explanations of the mathematics behind the starship Enterprise, if fiction is what she wants to use.And her effort to link calculus to sports through surfing, a sport familiar to very few people in relation to baseball, football, basketball, soccer, hockey, fails unless of course you are into surfing. So there were good things and not so good things. I'm glad I read the book. When it was good, it was very good. When it was bad, it was, well, just a bit of a stretch.

I purchased this book for my soon to be high-schooler son. He is not averse to learning calculus, but questions why he should learn it. Questions I didn't really know how to answer, so I bought the book (and read it myself before handing to him). While I found the writing style a bit rambling, the book does mention quite a few situations (some real-life and some imaginary) where calculus could be used to find answers, so in that sense it served its purpose for me. I think the descriptions of the solutions could benefit from slightly more rigor though - the solutions are all described verbally, presumably for math-phobic readers. However, I think the reader demographic is more likely people looking for a gentler introduction to calculus than their high-school/college textbooks, and who would find that its more effort to read and digest the verbal descriptions than look at a few equations.

First, the cons of the book:1) It tries to do too much. The book attempts at once to tell Ouellette's adventures in learning calculus; which involves anecdotes as a thought experiment she imagined while staying in traffic, going to the casino, and learning how to surf; be funny and easy-going diverging from the subject matter (once to talk about a zombie attack); present calculus putting as few equations as possible, teach you how to do some calculus and show some history behind great mathematicians. Due to that, it becomes unfocused, and doesn't give its topics as many pages and attention they deserve.2) Pictures, diagrams and equations often can do a fine job at simplifying what could be messy to explain in english, and this book just doesn't take much advantage of that. In the entire book there are 40 + pictures; but I don't think it's nearly enough for a person seeing this math for the first time (I may be wrong, because I was familiar with calculus before buying the book, so I can't really know), in special because most of them just show the picture of a function's graph.Pros:1) It is nice to see in a popular math book some mention of female mathematicians. There have been few of them, but some are really noteworthy, yet are forgotten to an extent. For instance, this book discusses the lives and achievements of Sophie Germain and Agnesi.2) The anecdotes of math history were a very good choice on Oullette's part, they are very interesting.Overall, I like this book, and it's worth the money. Don't expect to have many new skills by the time you're finished, or to be prepared for a course in calculus, but it should inspire you to learn more about math, even if just for distraction. The fact the author herself had a phobia about math and now is so comfortable as to write a book about it is in itself encouraging.Recommendations:If you want to learn more about math history: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0395929687/ref=s9_simh_gw_p14_d0_g14_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0XF6CWSRH8E86GMAMHKV&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846If you want to practice algebra and/or calculus:http://www.amazon.com/Schaums-000-Solved-Problems-Calculus/dp/0071635343/ref=sr_1_25?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1326655631&sr=1-25#_ (the pace is very fast, so at points you might need to consult more on the theory, but nothing an internet research won't make up for, and the exercises simply make for great practice).

Written by Scott L. Sammons using Christina's account.Thoroughly entertaining , and engaging. This is not a math book. It will not teach math or make your existing classes come to life. It does however, give interesting incite to the origins and uses of calculus. It can be an inspiration to take a calculus class.

Very well explain, we need these kind of books that tell a mathematical story. A story sticks much better , than dry facts. I hope this is another book that helps demystify calculus.
