My son and I used this book to chart out a trip last summer before he entered his first year of college, where he is studying physics and mathematics. The descriptions and information contained in the book were excellent. Not only did they help us decide where we wanted to go, but during the trip they helped illuminate the places we saw.If you are interested in "scientific travel" this book comes highly recommended.

My family does road trips. Long road trips (for example, Chicago to the Pacific ocean, three times in the last five years). Why do we do road trips? Because we can't afford the airfare, that's why. Sheesh! What a silly question! :)However, there are advantages to traveling along the ribbon of asphalt, and one of those joys is visiting "offbeat" places. We've been deep in a salt mine, stood on the highest point in New England and witnessed the mighty Rogue River disappear into one side of a lava cave and blast out the other like a giant's fire hose. It's a little difficult to do those things when you're cruising at 30,000 feet.Since I'm also a certified geek, I love to visit attractions that have some sort of scientific bent to them. So, a couple of months ago, as I was thumbing through an back issue of "Science News", I let out a squeal of delight when I saw that the "Guidebook for the Scientific Traveler: Visiting Physics and Chemistry Sites Across America", by Duane S. Nickell, had been published. When the book finally ended up in my hot, sweaty hands, I gobbled up the chapters on "Physicists", "Chemists" and "Particle Accelerators" like a starving man given a complete turkey dinner. You see, there are plenty of books that describe typical travel attractions like amusement parks or restaurants, but there are precious few that speak to the soul of a science nerd. Most other travel books are like eating candy for your nutrition. This book provides a full meal.My biggest surprise was how riveting I found the description of the safety precautions used during the first self-sustaining nuclear reaction at the University of Chicago in late 1942. I had just finished reading about the final safety measure - three scientists (nicknamed "The Suicide Squad") who were prepared to pour jugs of cadmium sulfate into the belly of the beast - when I was pulled away from the book. My mind was screaming "No! No! I have to find out what happened!". Well, OK, since south Chicago didn't become a radioactive dead-zone, I knew the outcome, but I still didn't want to stop reading. My only quibble, and it's a small one, is that the section on Albert Einstein is essentially the same as the Einstein section in Dr. Nickell's previous book, "Guidebook for the Scientific Traveler: Visiting Astronomy and Space Exploration Sites Across America (Scientific Traveler)". Since writing two books is a lot of hard work, I'll let slide this one dinky cheat. So, if you are interested in science, whether you are geek or not, I highly recommend the "Guidebook for the Scientific Traveler: Visiting Physics and Chemistry Sites Across America". It will help you find those interesting off beat travel attractions. You might even say to yourself "Hey, I didn't know that. That's kinda cool!"

You can tell that the author is a physics teacher. I find what he has to say (comments, anecdotes) dry and tendentious.

I have a professional relationship with Chuck. We worked together in the US Nuclear industry, and I hired him to teach the Supervisors at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station about the Fukushima Event. His Seminar was IMPACTFUL, to say the least. I also visited Fukushima Daini in 1984 time frame so I can relate to the area and culture. I have finished reading this book and LOVED it! I think Chuck did an excellent job of capturing the Leadership Challenges that the Japanese people faced trying to mitigate the disaster. And that is exactly what Chuck described in the summary on the cover flaps. I cannot imagine how they were able to communicate and know plant status without power. AWESOME Job Chuck! And God Bless the people of Japan.

This book is more about the author blowing his own horn. I was hoping for a technical analysis of the disaster. And disaster it was. If you're looking for the same, don't buy this book.

I fully enjoyed reading this book. Although I understood the enormous technical challenges then and now, Mr. Casto writes of the human suffering exclusive of the station blackout event. I very much enjoyed the extreme crisis leadership aspects detailed in the book. Prior to Fukushima there were two core-damaging events in about 12500 reactor years of operation. Then there were 3 in one week. Mr. Casto was in the middle of the chaos doing what his years of experience trained him to do. The NRC and the US industry were fortunate to have him thus engaged. In conclusion my favorite chapters were Little Texas and the Big Takeaway. A book that is very well done!

Chuck Casto's well-written book gave me an understanding of aspects of the Fukushima disaster that I'd not gotten from reading other accounts. Some accounts detailed what worked, and didn't work, from a technical aspect. Some accounts chronicled the political aspects of this disaster. But Casto's book explains how science and political science were intertwined - sometimes to the good and sometimes not. The good added significantly to my understanding of what happened and why.

Casto's perspective and background results in an excellent book that not only tells about this disaster, it includes the lessons that should be learned. This is truly a captivating study of crisis management. Found this a most interesting read.

Chuck had unique qualifications and experience to help the Japanese people deal with 3/11. His book explains many of the decisions that were made under extreme crisis. I enjoyed the read, even though it was technical, learning about management under pressure that can be used in many fields of business.Bill McClintock, R.Ph, former CEO & Owner of Med-Dispense

On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 earthquake struck eastern Japan. It was followed by a 45 foot high tsunami. After the water left, miles of land were contaminated and 15,870 were confirmed dead. Station Blackout is the story of what happened within the two nuclear plants most impacted by the disaster.Station Blackout is four tales smashed together. It is an autobiography of the author’s career working with nuclear energy. It is a memoir of the author’s time in Japan immediately following the tsunami. It is an almost minute-by-minute account of what happened during the earthquake, the subsequent tsunami and the mitigation efforts that were made. Finally, it is a story of four leaders, how their leadership had to flex with the changing conditions, and how being calm might have prevented an even larger disaster. The first two tales were boring compared to the last two. They seemed in the book more as filler than anything else. However, the last two stories were spectacular. They read like a Tom Clancy or Clive Cussler adventure tale. The reader is placed in the seat of the leaders of the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini plants. Would you have the strength to destroy the reactor even though your company’s leader as well as your nation’s government is telling you not to do it? Even if it could overt a nuclear meltdown and subsequent nuclear fallout for miles around the plant? The 1980s movie China Syndrome had a frantic Jack Lemmon trying to prevent the exact same thing in America. The scariest part is that this story is real!Even though Station Blackout is non-fiction, it is a great choice for thriller readers. Just skim the autobiographical details and don’t read the Introduction if you don’t already know details about what happened. 4 stars! Thanks to Radius Book Group and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Casto has written a PHD level disertation on crisis response leadership. His thesis is what does a highly trained leadr do in a situation totally beyond any situation or complication ever contemplated. Military and first responders routinely are faced with these things but not but not a nuclear power plant operator. I had hoped this book would go into more detail over the earthquake and resulting tsunami and effects at the nuclear power plants. Make no mistake, this is a book about leadership.

Ever know what it feels like to be at war with yourself? This book really is confusing and offensive. It isn't that the author didn't mean well it or that this wasn't well-known written. I keep an open mind to try reading books I not only agree with, but completely disagree with because this method of thinking is the superior way of becoming educated on perspective and most logical theories and facts,; plus it helps develop being more well-rounded. This book almost is completely hypocritical by saying that religion is a manipulation tactic to create the evils of discrimination, cultural weakness and acts of hatred, bigotry, etc. It may as well turn around and attack people who are religious by stirring up hate against every cultural diversity of theology to exist. My belief is you can't blame every bad thing on the tool used to a negative outcome, because people choose to make bad choices with them. Spoons don't make people fat, living in Germany doesn't make you a Nazi and Islamic religious practices is not to blame for 9/11. While I admit lots of bad things have happened in pointing fingers at religion, it doesn't make it true. Did Mother Theresa or Ghandi dedicate their lives to the dangers of theology?! Give me a break! This book is a personal prejudice towards devout people with a desire for good intentions in the name of religion. Completely hypocritical. Not having religion doesn't stop people from spreading love or hate. Everyone has options and freedom of agency. If anything else, corrupted theologians, corrupted historical records, or corrupted people in general are to blame for the tragedies this book blames religion. Hitler wasn't religious and he instigated the holocaust, our modern governments and politics are less religious than ever before established and you think we're in a better direction than before? I shouldn't have read this because it is reverse hypocrisy and it has me upset that people can read this and develop an intolerance towards the identities of ethnic and cultural values... This will cause people to cringe, hate and divide people of religious orientation. Poisonous attack against human values.

A well-researched and thoughtful criticism of the three world religions. Klein's presentation is an easy read. One of the best I've read so far.

I've read dozens of books on this topic and found many to be minimalist and unsatisfying, and several I even quit reading out of frustration. This book is exceptional! It covers a wide range of topics in sufficient depth and continually makes key points. While reading it I created a mental briefing guide (that I may write out) that will help me in future discussions with religious people who attack my apparent lack of morals and then claim I offend them when I challenge them. I know I'll be periodically rereading this book!

Starts off very well, at least at the beginning, with a good deal of albeit typical/obvious atheist/rationalist content. Very good on representative quotes from some of the more loathsome and poisonous bits of both the bible and koran. Pretty weak overall on historical content and analysis. Much too padded out with for me quite unnecessary atheist quotes throughout.Overall the book is ruined by continuous leftist preaching and shrill liberal virtue signalling, but of course rarely if ever actually specifically condemns leftist liberals and their unswerving apologetics for mohammedan terrorism, bigotry , sexism etc. Much more consistently harsh on christianity in tone than mohammedanism. Seems somewhat more even handed about Judaism , although offers the requisite, usual criticism, perhaps being called Klein has had some lingering effect. Only pretty limited commentary, about just a couple of other non monotheistic religions, seemingly gleaned mostly from Encyclopedias.Way too much leftist sociological opinionated drivel telling readers how his liberal/lefty world "should be", rather than actual factual/historical analysis. And seemingly obsessed with endlessly condemning anyone who doesn't slavishly and unconditionally accept homosexuality.Poorly focused in many places and way too politically biased to actually be a "go to" scholarly/reference book about Religion(s).Best book I have read on christianity is by Michael Paulkovich - Beyond The Crusades. Wonderfully polemical with a superb timeline and meticulous research. Robert Spencer's work on mohammed and mohammedanism is unsurpassed.Very very disappointed, as a conservative atheist I have utter contempt for ALL organized religion and was hoping to glean something worthwhile/new from this tome. Other than a few memes there was NOTHING NEW at all. Just the same old, same old, rehashed with lashings of pinko propaganda.

Klein certainly did his homework on this one. A thorough, comprehensive account of the aspects of religion that have divided communities instead of united them. Thought-provoking and witty, I recommend this book to anyone and everyone that has ever or never questioned the status-quo.

Irrespective of your religious views, this book will logically and rationally challenge your ideals and question the validity of any deity or religious ideology and its relevance to modern society. With extensive research Peter puts together a compelling analysis.
