I vowed to save this beautiful book to read on Christmas day, but sat down and read it cover to cover the day it arrived, and have thumbed through it/reread parts daily since. The text is fascinating, giving a brief history of each of the 10 houses profiled, up to the present. All but one (Dumfries house) are privately owned or occupied descendants of the families who lived in them in centuries past. All of the photographs are stunners - my favorite images are those of the private rooms, similar in that they're filled with historic and contemporary family photos. Knox describes major alterations that were made over time, but those looking for floor plans or architectural drawings, it doesn't contain any. There are many interior photos, at least one (usually more) exterior shot of each house, and quite a few images of gardens/landscapes. A lovely, lovely book.

I cannot say enough about this book.....it is visually stunning, very, very interesting to read, and a fabulous look at how people lived (and some still live) in these incredible "country houses". Each chapter is devoted to one house and provides the history of the home accompanied by gorgeous photos. Going through the pages of this book really takes you into a different world of families and clans that had wealth. And what stunning scenery! It makes me want to get on a plane and fly to Scotland. This book will not disappoint and will make a wonderful addition to your home library.

This book is well wort adding to the collection of anyone interested in architecture, Historyor interior decoration.

I love this book - the houses cover many centuries of architecture and history and I have visited almost all of them - and in some cases, stayed in them. I have been a life member of the National Trust for Scotland for over 40 years, and know both the Buccleuch houses well. Also, the coverage of Dumfries House is superb - thanks to the Prince of Wales, this gorgeous Adam home has been saved and restored to its former glory. A MUST for fans of Scottish history.

I was expecting a bit more exterior photos, otherwise the book is well written and fully met my expectations. A great buy if you are a history/architecture buff.

This book skillfully combines history, architecture and decoration in a dozen tidy packages with each chapter devoted to one particular country house and the selection spans several centuries. The featured homes display not only inspiring design but wonderfully textured environments where history and artful decoration combine to create true character. Worn original upholstery and carpets blend beautifully with generations of family paintings, fine china and silver and impart a wonderful sense of historical continuity between generations of owners. It is very unlike the better known , better preserved National Trust stately houses - these Scottish country houses are still family homes where daily living takes place. I was more than pleased with this lavishly illustrated book and recommend it to anyone who appreciates the character of antique houses that are still homes. I loved it!

The photos in this book are beautiful. A nice selection of homes and a good representation of Scottish county homes.

I tried - I really did. I *genuinely* wanted to like this book - it even passed my personal "75 Page Test" - if it holds me for the first 75 pages I stick with it. The reviews were largely glowing. As a Modern Pagan Witch I was roped in by descriptions of the author weaving in contemporary concepts of the Wheel of the Year, the Goddess and references to tie-ins with Dion Fortune's The Magical Battle for Britain. The sample rhymed spells calling on the Goddess included in promotional material sounded fabulous. But after an initially intriguing and filled-with-possibilities start, this was ultimately plodding, painful to read and the characters were flat and one-dimensional. I found many of the main characters difficult to like and some even unlikable - Ursule the Second made me want to jump off a Cornish sea-cliff! The "mother-daughter" relationship sales-pitch by many reviewers left me scratching my head - if this is what the "love between mothers and daughters" is all about, I'm thankful I missed all the dysfunction in real life! I can't say the same after having read A Secret History of Witches. Trust your intuition if you're on the fence about whether to read this book or not - there's more genuine magic in that than in Grandmere Ursule's crystal.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It is very pagan friendly, and incorporates and alternative history and the spirit of the Magickal Battle of Britain, though it is not descriptive of the true events of it. (See: The Magical Battle of Britain. I love the stories like this and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel where magic is used for good in times of war.This story is not at all complicated, and quite easy to read as a simple pleasure. It has strong female characters who are hereditary witches. This is the story of a lineage of mothers and daughters through time, and their use of magic in attaining their life's ambitions. The stories center around family, love, and children, and occasionally fortune. The individual women's tales should resonate with all women. The book has chapters, but it is perhaps easier to put down as each new generations' tale emerges.The book does draw on ritual aspects of modern neopaganism and Wicca, as well as, in some sense, Wicca's own very real historical fiction. Woven through the story are topics such as the wheel of the year, with very simple explanations of those days' rituals, and basic circle casting and scrying. At times the women in the stories are raised Christian, and the story is very Christian friendly overall, though there are some fundamentalist witch hunters who are much feared, for good reason.It is not lewd, though very brief sexual situations are mentioned in a romantic way, and it is never explicit. The language is very mild and in general, the values are love and faithfulness to it, observance of the wheel of the year, and family and loyalty. There's also a strong thread of love and respect for animals and their well being, and love of the earth and planting/gardening.If you enjoy this story, especially the tales of Gypsies practicing the craft in secret in the early- mid 21st century, you might also like Diary of a Witch. As I was reading "A Secret History of Witches" I found myself often remembering how I enjoyed that book, too.

It took a long time for me to get into this book. The story begins in the early 1800's with a family of witches and follows their line up to the 1940's. Although I understand what the author was trying to do, the majority of the book felt like one long list of names. There were many characters, but they were all underdeveloped. And, it was frustrating to get interested in one witch's story, only to have it end abruptly, and then skip ahead fifteen years. I did not really enjoy this book until I got to the last character, Veronica. Here, the book stopped skipping ahead and actually told a story. Also, for a book titled, "A Secret History of Witches", I would have liked to have learned more about the actual history of their craft. Where did the characters get their power? Why did they have magic, but not other people? Why did some daughters inherit the gift, but not others? Why did they know so little about their own craft, even in the beginning? I did really enjoy Veronica's story and the work she did with her power. I would have liked to have seen that with the previous generations. Overall, it was a good book, but not my favorite.

This novel was a struggle from beginning to end. I felt I had to finish it because I purchased it, it was that unenjoyable. Absolutely no depth. I honestly don’t even see the point in the story. A line of 5 witches? Ok. But that’s it!!!! Unimaginative, boring, I cannot believe it was nearly 500 pages. I hate leaving negative reviews, but this book was beyond disappointing.

Sit back and enjoy the ride. Each character is well developed and interesting. I hated that this book ended so soon . I read a lot of books. This one made me slow down and read for the pleasure of reading.

I love witch stories. This one begins in Brittany, 1821. It traces five generations of powerful mothers and daughters whose magic is both dangerous and extraordinary. The Orchierses fight to keep the old ways alive with uncanny spells and rites. When World War II breaks out, magic is needed more than ever. This is a very unique story, exciting and captivating. It will definitely entertain you. It may also entice you to discover your own witching gifts!

Once you read past the second generation, you have finished the book. Each generation is the same story line. I sat reading thinking, ""Oh let me guess, she gets pregnant out of wedlock and it is a girl and oh wow she is a witch." That pretty much sums it up. After the 2nd generation it is a boring, repeat story line caught up in in a spinning, gerbil's wheel.

A versatile scholar concerned with the practical and the theoretical, he begins with a gripping story of his own boyhood compulsions. Then he shows how society both aggravates and aggrandizes obsessiveness, notably in sex education, science, and psychoanalysis. He uses examples from literature, history, art and medicine: Galton, Dickens, Freud, Marie Stopes and many more. He uses the term "biocultural narrative" to break through the separation between historical context and the latest fads, and between categorical disease and the experience of illness. This is profound, brilliant, and engaging. A retired psychiatrist and historian of psychotherapy, I applaud the author's ability to join medicine and psychology with their historical and social contexts. He writes well, too.

Obsession: A History is a rather unfortunate entry into the conversation about the nature of both obsession in culture and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Put simply, the author is simply not up to the task of separating ideas that should be separate and putting together ideas that should be together. In sum, he is simply not up to the task of taking on this subject.Yes, we live in an era of obsession. Fine. However, whether or not one pathologizes the symptoms associated with OCD or even call it OCD the reality is that OCD exists independently of whatever we call it, its constellation of symptoms exist and have existed as far back as we have personal histories and modern neuro-biological treatments such as exposure and response prevention therapy, medication and others have proven extremely effective in treating these symptoms (call them whatever you like). It does not exist simply to those who have it and those who treat it. It exists like any other medical disorder.Would that Foucault were alive today and could take on this topic fully from a cultural perspective. At the same time as the author of Obsession: A History is trying (and failing) to out Foucault Foucault, the author of this text is attempting to achieve a Batesonian like cybernetics approach to the topic but, again, fails.Either write a book about cultural obsession or write a book about relational awareness and environment in terms of OCD. To attempt to put such complex topics together in such a volume is, frankly, disrespectful to the subject matter and readers who follow the topic closely and, to a greater extent, misleading to those unfamiliar with the topics.This relatively slim volume will likely not shed any new light for those familiar with the topic of obsession in culture or obsessive-compulsive disorder.In the end, this book comes off as an unfortunate interruption to an important conversation.

This is what you would expect from a Schirmer book-- good paper stock, clear printing. As noted in the reviews from other purchasers most of the preludes do not have fingering, but the famous Opus 3 prelude has fingering, and a few of the others have some minimal fingering. These preludes are for advanced players, but amateurs like myself can still enjoy playing the Opus 3, and the Opus 23 #5, preludes, and have fun trying to run through some of the others. I'm happy with my purchase.

I had this edition from the 1970s but it yellowed then fell apart. I was stunned at the quality of the modern day version. Better paper and better print. Frankly I typically only see this clarity in Henle editions. Great music, more accessible than you'd imagine. Highly recommended.

These are such as beautiful preludes and at the same time quite the pain in the rear! I am a proficient sight-reader so playing one of these from start to end prove to end in under 45 minutes, but having the counterpoint as similar in Bach's music and polyrhythm from say, Debussy - it is a skill and showcase of the difficulty to master the dynamics of one of these preludes (as is with any other piece) but even more so with Rachmaninoff. After being able to master just one measure, you feel as if you've truly accomplished one of the many difficulties that great pianists like Horowitz and Rubenstein had overcome themselves. This is a wonderful book and will teach you a thing or two of Russian music as well as build upon your foundation of music theory! (These pieces are excellent to pick apart for theory study, so there's another reason I would recommend this book to any pianist!)
