The best all-in-one book I have seen on Green burials--informative, well categorized and an easy read. Covers more than green burials and it's really thought provoking. Lots of good reference information and I especially liked the larger than normal type size…Easy on the eyes.. Recommended

The cover says that the book offers "everything you need to plan an affordable, environmentally friendly burial". In an age of oversell, it's rare to find a book that fully delivers what it offers, and does it in such a readable, comprehensive, and well organized way. Clearly, a lot of wisdom and experience when into the creation of this guidebook. Fournier's writing style is both engaging and comforting, and goes a long way towards helping people ensure that their passing is gentle on the earth and on their loved ones. Dealing with the death of a loved one is stressful; this guide book is a blessing.

This book does a great job explaining the eco-friendly and cost-effective benefits of opting for a green burial. It's a great resource for people interested in green burials who need to figure out the logistics.

Great resource. Authoritative and covers many of the topics that perplex folks wishing to have natural burials.

This originally appeared on The Magical Buffet's website on 06/18/18.Not to be morbid, but we’re all going to die. We generally learn this at a young age, which gives you (hopefully) plenty of time to ponder that fact. For as long as I can remember I told people that when I died to donate any parts of my body that could help others, cremate me, and toss the ashes in the garbage because they don’t really matter. I found the idea of my body being around in an urn, or with a headstone somewhere, to be kind of a burden on those left behind. Why bother? I’ll be dead so who cares what happens? Then, thanks to the internet I started seeing articles about having your ashes put in a seed pod to grow a tree. Suddenly there seemed like there was a way for my body to still be useful! Of course that was the stuff of essentially internet legend, right? This all brings us to the fascinating book “The Green Burial Guidebook: Everything You Need to Plan an Affordable, Environmentally Friendly Burial” by Elizabeth Fournier. What an amazing resource! I got to learn about the impact our deaths have on the environment. Embalming, caskets, even cremation all have different impacts on the environment. Fournier expertly explains all these differences and how you can choose to lessen the environmental impact of your burial. Better still, she takes you step by step through the funeral process. Different types of funerals, various laws to consider, figuring out what to be buried in, cremations, and more are clearly outlined. Once you’re loaded with all this information and feel ready to act on your new knowledge, Fournier offers a bunch of resources.“The Green Burial Guidebook” is a helpful book to read to just to learn about the after death process of legally burying someone and honoring the deceased wishes. Essentially if you, or anyone you know, is planning on dying one day, you should read this book.

Eyeopening and grounded information on what can be done with the body after the Soul leaves it. We have many earth saving ways to restore mother earth with our bodies. The information presented will help with defraying the cost and enhancing the environment. A new way to look at death and dying. Listen to my interview with Elizabeth on Get Over It! Podcast. She is funny and factual!

A beautifully written guide on the logistics of not only how to navigate the laws and regulations of natural burial options, but how to physically carry out your (or your loved one's) last wishes. The Green Burial Guidebook breaks down a sometimes hard-to-swallow subject into manageable steps for pre- and at-need families, with a candor and sensitivity that Elizabeth practices with grace. A top resource for the public and professionals alike, and a wonderful icebreaker for those unsure or curious about the final facts of life.

This book is informative and well written and not only really helped me gain an understanding of what green burial is, it inspired me to really consider this option.

Review

In this volume, Hicks has delivered a sophisticated work of scholarship: detailed, insightful, deeply researched.... But the book has a much wider relevance, too, which it would be unwise to understate. Discussing, as it does, the role of profoundly structural gender discrimination in the collapse of technical dominance by a formerly great power, this book makes very uncomfortable reading – on a number of levels.―Times Higher EducationFans of the movie Hidden Figures may be interested in this scholarly analysis of goings on across the Atlantic, by an historian of science at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Her deep dive into 'how Britain discarded women technologists and lost its edge in computing,' the subtitle, is a sobering tale of the real consequences of gender bias―a problem that persists in many technical fields today.―Harvard Magazine...makes a detailed historical and symbolic case for suppressed and unvalued women talent, and bad management for a whole country in a strategical sector.―Neural, 1/11/19

This is a fascinating account of how the UK civil service gradually but deliberately pushed women out of computing technology jobs over a three-decade period. It's one of the best researched and most compelling examples of the negative impact of gender and class discrimination on a country's economy.―Maria M. Klawe, President, Harvey Mudd College (2018-01-01)Marie Hicks's well-researched look into Britain's computer industry, and its critical dependence on the work of female computer programmers, is a welcome addition to our body of knowledge of women's historical employment in science and technology. Hicks confidently shows that the professional mobility of women in computing supports the success of the industry as a whole, an important lesson for scholars and policymakers seeking ways to improve inclusion in STEM fields.―Margot Lee Shetterly, author of Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race (2018-01-01)This is a fascinating and disturbing account of women's roles in the British computing industry's rise and fall. In its analyses of job classifications and campaigns for equal pay, this study examines relationships between gender and computing in far greater detail than previous accounts. Deeply researched and persuasively argued, Hicks's study of computing in Britain complements existing accounts of women's exclusion from the US computing industry―and offers important lessons for the tech industries of both nations today.―Jennifer S. Light, Department Head and Professor of Science, Technology, and Society, MIT (2018-01-01)Programmed Inequality is a model of socially informed history that reveals deep linkages between technological modernization and profound cultural commitments to gender binaries and inequities. It defies any intention we may still hold to interpret the development of computing as distinct from matters of power, identity, and democratic participation.―Amy E. Slaton, Professor of History, Drexel University; author of Race, Rigor, and Selectivity in U.S. Engineering: The History of an Occupational Color LineComputing is widely recognized as a male-dominated field, but how did it come to be this way? In Programmed Inequality, Marie Hicks illuminates how structural discrimination shaped the composition of the British computer workforce and created lasting gender inequalities. Clearly written and elegantly argued, Hicks's book is a must-read for those hoping to understand how ideas about gender, class, and sexuality became embedded in computing and how government practices and new technologies worked together to undermine social and economic equality.―Eden Medina, Associate Professor of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington; author of Cybernetic Revolutionaries: Technology and Politics in Allende's Chile

I highly recommend Programmed Inequality; it is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the forces that have shaped the contemporary STEM labor market. The book analyzes the history of computing in 20th-century England to demonstrate how labor history and gender history are inseparable, and to argue that structural gender bias ultimately hobbled British technological development. It is worth emphasizing the Programmed Inequality was written by a professional historian; they have been trained to carefully examine and weigh the evidence provided by primary source materials (such as newsletters, government documents, employment records) creating during the historical period being studied *and* to interpret that evidence in light of what other histories, historians, journalists, and other authors have written about the subject.Programmed Inequality is interesting, clearly written, and thoroughly researched. Hicks employs evidence from the British Library, the London Metropolitan Archives, and the National Archives (plus other archives), as well as from interviews, government reports, computing manuals, and abundant non-archival sources to show how - and why - British computing became male-identified. Hicks demonstrates how women’s contributions to British technology were devalued and minimized over time, in parallel with how the British government struggled to usher in a promised technological revolution to improve British society.Chapter One, focused on World War II, shows “why the women who worked with the world’s first digital, electronic, programmable computers had a critical, material impact on the outcome of the war” (13). Chapter Two traces how “women’s technical abilities dropped in value” after the war (13). Then, “in 1964, Prime Minister Harold Wilson initiated a ‘white-hot’ technological revolution meant to burn up inequalities within British society as it modernized the country” (14). That “White Heat” effort produced job opportunities for men and women, but only briefly, as chronicled in Chapter Three. Chapter Four explains how recruitment efforts soon focused on “career-minded, management-aspirant young men” while “high-level jobs were thought to be inappropriate for women” (14). Chapter Five shows the effects of this gendered, targeted recruiting: because “the government neglected most of its trained technical workforce” - who were women - and struggled to find the “ideal technocrat” candidates - deemed to be men, “these new hiring standards had the effect of draining training budgets and exacerbating labor shortages” (15). Hicks’ compelling conclusion applies this cautionary tale for high-technology workforces today.

If you've heard the fuss over women in tech, but you're still not quite sure where it's coming from, this is a great book for you. If you're an ally to the women in tech movement, but want to understand it better, this is a great book for you. Even as a woman in tech, sometimes I wonder, "is all this really necessary? Why are people so passionate about this?" This book lays out the history clearly. Through understanding the history of the rise of technology and women's role in it, it becomes obvious why "women in tech" is such a big deal.Right on the cover, Hicks makes it obvious that women in tech have business value, and that this book outlines what happens when they are not valued. It is a cautionary tale. An eye opening history. I think that everyone can benefit from the history in this book.

I checked this book out from the library because it sounded interesting. I was just one chapter into it when I decided I had to own it. I rarely purchase books but this one is definitely a keeper. It's a dense book, full of rich information, but is not difficult to read. It's obviously very well researched and the author does a excellent job conveying details. Highly recommended!

Incredible.

Thoughtful history that completely re-writes the narrative that tech is a male domain by looking at the stories of those who worked in the expansion of post-WWW11 computing in the UK. A must read for people who want to understand the relationship between culture and workplaces or want to understand gender and technology. Engaging, interesting and insightful!

I'm a computer programmer, so this book was right up my alley. But still, I was surprised how much I learned, not just about computer history. This book shows how sexism hurts economies and entire nations. It's sad how much it resonates with what's going on today. A good read for anyone who is interested in why computing is the way it is right now and why talented, smart women still aren't given their due. The reason for this is all about power and history, not about women not being "good enough." And, the British example is a cautionary tale for the US: if we want to avoid a quick slide into second-rate world power status we'd do well to learn from their mistakes. On the brighter side, this book has tons of neat photos and cartoons of early computing, and the ways that women were represented in the early days of computing are truly surprising. From satirical cartoons to topless bikini shots (really) you'll see women represented as experts, idiots, and everything in between. The personal stories of the people interviewed were also great. Way more stories about people being electrocuted (or almost electrocuted) by computers than I would've imagined!

I taught this book in a graduate seminar recently, and it is a stellar example of the best of a new generation of history of computing that pays close attention to people, politics, labor, and gender. In my mind you cannot understand the work and culture of computer programming --- past or present --- without understanding the remarkable gender swap that happens in computer work in the middle of the 20th century. Computing was originally women's work, and it was only later made masculine. Contemporary efforts to get women into computing are not working against the "natural" state of the industry; they are necessary correctives to a series of missteps (deliberate or otherwise) that forced many women out, and discouraged many others from entering. Marie Hicks has written a rigorous but highly readable history that should be on the shelves of anyone serious about learning the history of the computer revolution.

With an emphasis on hiking, canoeing, bike trails and camp sites, this guide to beautiful spots in New Hampshire is a fine resource for recreational travellers with or without children. ivided into seven regions, each regional chapter discusses ecological and wildlife aspects in addition to a varied number of featured scenic places -- the coast (12), Monadnock (14), Merrimack Valley(11), Lakes (20), Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee (12), White Mountains (10) and the Great North Woods (8). Entries are about one page and contain directions, activities and contact information, including phone number and web site address. The book concludes with an appendix of the state's "green" organizations, educational centers, and resources for maps and guidebooks, and an index.I find the book is useful but not exhaustive, and would have rated it lower due to the total lack of maps, but the environmental/wildlife information is a welcome addition to the text. Only one general map of the state is included -- a real weakness.

It's a funny book and my child has enjoyed learning that everything does really poop.It probably is better suited for boys, as it does have art that is anatomically correct....so if you don't want to explain what a wee-wee is to your daughter, this might not be for you.My son, who is turning 4 next month, loves this book and often "reads" it by himself.

This is an absolute MUST HAVE for resistance potty trainers! My 3 1/2 year old daughter had been able to control her bowel movements for many months, but she was resistant to potty training and I didn't know how to move the process along. She had been in the habit of doing her big business in a fresh diaper between bath and bedtime. After reading this book for the second night in a row, she announced that she had to poop and wanted to go on the toilet. Voila! Just like that she was on the path. The next day we put on a pull up and went out to get undies. The day after that she was in undies all day and kept trying to pee on the toilet, but not a drop came out. We just had a lot of "leaks" (as I call them instead of accidents) and we went through lots of undies and pants that day. Then on her second day in undies she had figured out the connection between the urge to pee and peeing and we haven't looked back since. This book was, without a doubt, a turning point for us. Do whatever you have to do to find a copy of this book. Especially, if you have a child that loves animals and isn't so much into the princess thing. None of the princess potty books with stickers interested her. Neither did Super Pooper - although that was better than others we had tried. Potty Animals is another great book once they get going with the process, but it won't motivate them to take the plunge. It's more about bathroom etiquette. Buy this book!!!

Just received this book for my almost 17 month old twins (boy/girl). I know they're a bit young but my daughter has recently started taking off her diaper at nap time and has flooded her crib twice (thank goodness no poop!!!) Her brother more playfully tries to take his off, but she is expressing interest in starting to train or seeking attention. Either way its a great time to start learning. We got some books and videos and 2 potty chairs (gonna have to replace BOTH potty chairs but those are different reviews) they had very little interest in the other books, but were fascinated with this. My son was especially interested in the page that shows men and boys from adult to baby all pooping. I think he put together in his head a bit more what happens when he poops in his diaper. He loved the whole book but was especially fascinated seeing a human poop. I have to respectfully disagree with the librarian about this not being appropriate or necessary etc. Not sure exactly how she worded it. Its a completely NATURAL bodily function and I think the attitude that it is a dirty little secret (well ok its dirty, lol) is exactly why kids think poop and farts are funny. Its treated by people with that attitude as something naughty. Well I for one (not sure if librarian is a parent) am praying that I am not one of those parents who wake to find their child has removed diaper and smeared the poop all over their crib, walls, selves etc. I want them to fully understand what poop is and where it goes. This requires SEEING POOP. I thank the author for writing this and it gets an A+ in this house!

PROs: This book has worked wonders for my 2.5 year old toddler. We started reading it to him a day before starting potty training (we put him in big boy underwear on a Saturday morning) and we read it several times a day during the next two to three weeks. He would request it (together with Julie Markes' "Where's the poop?") almost every time he used the potty, especially when he needed to - you guessed it - poop. I strongly believe that the story line and images helped him understand, verbalize and accept the whole process. What I liked in particular:- Simple graphics with bold colors: just the right amount of image and information on each page.- The story line flows logically and there's plenty of room for you to add your own sounds and gestures: be creative and it will amuse your toddler tremendously. You can use it to build up vocabulary. For instance, on the 'All living things eat...", name all the animals (lion, pig) and the things they eat (meat, acorns) and your child will soon repeat them back to you. Try to imagine together what the child on the same page is eating: is it your toddler's favorite foods or (sigh!) some of the foods you would like your toddler to eat.- My son liked to play a 'look and find' game to identity the poop on every page: for some reason, he found the snake page hilarious as he would trace the trajectory of food from the snake's mouth until it comes out as poop; he got better and better at following the snake's curves with his finger, which is great because soon after I started doing tracing exercises with him to prepare him for writing.- The flap on the last page where mommy says "Excuse me! I am making a poop! Please shut the door!". I used the same words when my son would try to follow me to the restroom and he did get the message after a while.(Faux)CONs: Be ready to read this with your toddler TENS of times. But as long as everything makes its way into the potty and you also have fun in the process, it is SO worth it.My son lost interest in this book about one month later, but baby # 2 is on her way and this will be cheerfully used again in a couple of years.

I bought this book as well as a few others to help with his problem of holding in his poop. This is his favorite one of the bunch to read and I am not even exaggerating that two days after getting my books in my son has been pooping fine. He's 2 1/2 and we are just starting potty training but he was holding his poop even with a diaper on. It had been a battle for about two months and I tried everything, laxatives, suppositories, etc. I have to believe that the books is what did it over all the medical stuff!
