Reviewing a Michelin Green Guide is not easy; it's like reviewing the latest Faberge easter egg for the Tsar. All the previous ones were great; this one is great; what is there to say? I haven't used every Green Guide, but I have used a bunch, both in the US and in Europe. They don't replace a general guide book such as Fodor's, Lonely Planet, Rick Steves, and the like. But for culture and history, they simply can't be beat. And for the volumes with walking tours, you'll see everything worth seeing on those tours. We recently spent a week in Chicago, and we relied entirely on this book. It does not have exhaustive lists of restaurants or hotels, but everything it suggests is carefully selected. Follow as many of their key recommendations as possible, and your time in Chicago will be well spent. Unless, of course, you want to hit the hottest sports bars and skate board parks: look elsewhere for those.

I have purchased several guides to Paris prior to my trip. They all were quite good, but in the end this was the only one I took with me, and I was pleased with my decision. My hotels were reserved well ahead of time and I was aware of various practicalities, e.g., how to use Metro and RER, where to buy groceries, etc. What I needed was a guide to various sites and a set of walking tours with maps. And this Michelin guide was perfect for that. The quality of the binding, paper, print, and maps is very high making reading the guide more pleasurable than some other guides I have.I would definitely use it on future trips to Paris, and will be buying updated editions depending on how soon that will be.

Customer reviews of older editions of this guide are very complimentary -- and deservedly so! But sadly, the newer green guides are much less useful than their predecessors and this 2011 green guide is a good example of the newer editions.I have been using Michelin green and red guides with great pleasure since 1961 for our annual vacations in Europe. I just counted the green guides we own -- 40, some of them dating back to the 1960s and 1970s if we haven't returned to an area since then. But the newest green guides are a disaster. They are full of color photos and hotel and restaurant recommendations -- but much of the detailed descriptions of the sights has disappeared. And some of the town maps and the sights themselves have also disappeared from this guide, including some sights that were rated one star in the previous edition.Another problem -- this guide is now organized by area, instead of alphabetically by town, so I can no longer quickly turn to the location in which I'm interested but have to use the index to find its page number.I bought the new (2011) edition of the Germany green guide because it has up-to-date information about opening times, entrance fees, etc. Fortunately, I still have my 2005 Germany green guide and will take it along on our trip to Germany to have the detailed descriptions and town maps. And I will no longer discard the older green guide when I buy a new edition!

The Green Guide is the basecamp for Paris travel books. The book's limitation, in Kindle form, anyway, is that it is not so easily searchable. The index does not suffice. A Kindle word search discloses references to an address equally with references to the thing I'm looking for. Hence, searching in Kindle app takes more effort than it should.Obviously, walking 'round Paris, it's easier to carry the Kindle version than the physical book, so that makes a trade-off.

This guide is loaded with information, organized by arrondissement, which is great, as many competing volumes which use a short hand nomenclature when describing areas of Paris.If you are a wanderer...or a "flaneur" as the Parisians might say, this is a good guide. If you need more direction see Mr. Steves' works. Those will transport you quite well through very structured "tours, walks" etc.

Like so many of the Michelin green guides, this is an indispensable companion when you visit Paris. Even though I had been there several times before, it opened my eyes to a lot of neighborhoods and sites that I had not previously seen. Also highly recommend Seven Ages of Paris by Alistair Horne -- you will never see the Louvre the same again!

Just as all other Michelin maps are, this one is no exception - very clear, easy to read, good use of color and has all the info I want when I need a reference for my location and planned routes, destinations, etc. Having GPS and NAV-Tech gear in your car is great, but I always have a REAL map by my side just in case that gear sends me on the wrong route or takes me to non-existent roads or on "short-cuts" that are really private roads, not for public use. Have heard too many horror stories from others about that kind of trip. Having the best real map assures me I'll never be lost. Then there are those times when you ask for NAV -Tech gear in your rental car and the agency has none....then what're you going to do?

The best , most detailed guide for visitors to Brittany. It has information on all aspects of Beittany with maps, ratings on sites, and great descriptions of town, churches, beaches, etc. I would not visit France without a green guide for the region.

Death Metal musician and author Ekeroth (Violent Italy) shows a true fan's dedication in this oral history/band index of the thunderous music scene that emerged from frozen, sparsely-populated Sweden in the '80s and early '90s. In his introduction, Ekeroth explains the youth phenomenon that was Swedish Death Metal (it sounds pretty much like you would think) as natural in a country "generally made up of extremely small and boring towns." He writes: "In the small and worthless town of Avesta where I grew up, there were metal bands in every garage, school, and youth center," he writes. Without sensationalizing SDM's dark, flamboyant lyrics, Ekeroth traces the movement that produced more than a thousand bands, from proto-genre "thrash metal" (more punk) to bastard offshoots like "black metal" (more makeup, less fun), through interviews with the musicians, tape-traders and fanzine writers who were there. The furious scene, made up almost entirely of frustrated and disaffected teenagers, would echo the '70s punk revolution in New York and explode with the same powder-keg intensity, before eventually spawning "ridiculously well established" years that meant the death of Death. Maybe worth the price alone is the appendix, an "A to Z of Swedish Death Metal Bands," which features brief profiles and discographies (with Ekeroth's opinions) of every known SDM band, from world-famous At the Gates ("all their albums are classic masterpieces") to Slakt (just one 2005 demo, "probably nerds"). Daniel Ekeroth gives an amazingly detailed account of the birth and rise of one the most revered genres of metal music. It focuses on the seeds of the extreme movement and how it developed into the massive Sunlight sound and beyond.It basically leaves no stones unturned on the origins of these Swedish bands. the book includes first hand accounts from many people in those bands and people involved with zines, radioshows ectThis book is truly hard to put down.If you are looking for info about In Flames, Dark Tranquillity or other Gothenburg bands do not look here.The closest you will get is some info from Michael Amott from Arch Enemy but if you didn't know he was apart of the seminal band Carnage.Get it now!

Excellent work dedicated to the Swedish scene. Lots of great information and interviews, et cetera. It isn’t flawless with some mistakes here and there, but where else are you going to get such an extreme write up on the Swedish movement? It’s a little overpriced in my opinion, but well worth the purchase.

Good piece of social study on Swedish death metal. Can find some killer bands to check out too!

Arrived in great condition

Like any book on music there are a lot of parts in the book that are subjective. That being said this is the most in-depth, interesting, and well researched book not just on metal but on any topic I've read concerning music.The pictures and articles Ekeroth managed to scrape together for this amazing tome compliment the writing and history very well, and being that this is the most money I've spent for a book in a long time, it was worth every penny.A star gets deducted because, even though it is clarified in the introduction that there a lots of parts that are subjective, there are areas where the author comes off "metal-er than thou." This is especially the case in the index of metal bands where bands that actually made money and became famous (see In Flames) are called "too commercial." Shouldn't the listener/reader be the judge of that? And maybe they are too commercial in Scandinavia, but last I checked an In Flames album would not stand a chance to crack the Top 40 in the American market, which IS way overproduced and manufactured.That aside it has to be one of the best things I've read in a long time and I'm hoping someone comes along and puts out a book about Children of Bodom and the Finnish metal scene sometime in the near future (preferably in the King's English and not Finnish).

This is remarkably well written and goes into detail about the music itself instead of just the people and places involved in its creation. There are lots of great photos, too. If you love metal, this should be on your book shelf or coffee table! :) Sarah

With it's diligent research, copious rare graphics, enthusiastic delivery and quality printing, this just may be the best book ever written on any aspect of heavy metal. It goes to show just how well the music can be documented when you have an author that really gives a damn! The author deserves our gratitude and praise for the amount of work and love put into this book, which is staggering in it's exhaustive nature.

Learning to speak Korean is probably one of the most difficult life goals for many people, mainly because they have to rely on printed materials and learning how to accurately pronounce something in Korean is virtually impossible – you wonder what all the different pronunciation symbols stand for and there aren’t many resources to check if what you are READING is actually how it’s SAID, and this is exactly what makes this book stand out. Format wise, it is a set of expressions used daily in Korea, in 21 different topics such as at school, at work, at the airport, and the likes. The list is quite exhaustive, starting from very basic to complicated, covering many different scenarios you might actually run into. The good thing about how they are presented is that every expression comes with what they call “grammar guide marks” – they are differently shaped underscores, and they are used to indicate which part of a Korean expression means the same in its English counterpart, making it useful in learning not only how to say it but getting a grip on how Korean grammar is structured. I believe this is a great way to familiarize yourself with Korean grammar system, even if you don’t have any knowledge in Korean prior to this point (actually, the book starts with a brief introductory session on the Korean alphabet, their pronunciation, and grammar structure) . The best part of the book is of course the supplementary audio tracks. You can download from their website or you can just stream them on their home page, depending on your study environment. Each expression is spoken 4 times – twice slow and twice at normal speed. In this way, you can hear how each syllable is pronounced when spoken independently, but also hear how it’s said when spoken together with other syllables, because sometimes pronunciations change as a result of interacting with other syllables. So as the book claims, listen to the audio tracks, repeat (or mimic), and keep repeating, and you would have learned to say Korean expressions. Some tips – don’t try to overshoot and start maybe a few expressions a day, and try to customize the expressions whenever possible, for example when you say “How can I get to Seoul?” just practice more by substituting “Seoul” to “New York” or something of your choice. Just be creative… Practice, practice, and have fun!

This book came in perfect condition, it was packaged great. The book itself is very helpful and has great phrases. Its perfect!

Bought this textbook to teach Korean my American husband. Like it so far.

Love that you can see exactly how you pronounce the Hangul. That's what I have struggled with, if you don't know Hangul, then how do you know how to pronounce anything correctly? This, along with "Korean Picture Dictionary" by Tina Cho, which has Hangul pronunciation, makes learning so much easier. I also got the Korean flashcards which are fun.

I highly recommend this book if you really want to learn Korean. Also, the supplementary Korean audio tracks are very useful!

This book by itself is really good. However the audio download is awful. First off, it's loaded (and I mean LOADED) with malware. It download as a zip file that I couldn't open more than once.

About the Author

Filippo Cappellano is a lieutenant-colonel of the Fanteria Carrista (tank corps) currently serving at the army historical branch (Ufficio Storico Esercito) in Rome. He is the author of several books and essays on the history of weapons, organization and tactics of the Italian army in the 20th century. He frequently collaborates with Italy's defence industries and military history journals.Pier Paolo Battistelli earned his Ph.D. in Military History at the University of Padua. A scholar of German and Italian politics and strategy throughout World War II, he is active in Italy and abroad writing titles and essays on military history subjects. A contributor to the Italian Army Historical Office, he is currently revising his Ph.D. thesis for publication: The War of the Axis: German and Italian Military Partnership in World War Two, 1939-1943.

Italy experimented with armored vehicles even before the First World War. However, it wasn't until the Second World War that the Italian military got serious about fielding of actual armored vehicles, including armored cars. This Osprey New Vanguard Series book explores the conundrum, and the results.The authors appear to have very good background in Italian military history; their expertise is visible in their commentary on Italy's struggle to develop and field a practical armored car, suitable for reconnaissance under combat conditions. The text may be a translation from Italian; the English is sometimes labored but always understandable. A really interesting selection of period and modern photographs and illustrations show the progression to a handful of practical designs which saw actual use. Of note, the fighting in the North African desert seems to have driven the fielding of armored cars and actual fighting units. Also of note, the German Army may have been the principal beneficiary. Well recommended to students of armored warfare.

The Osprey books universally provide a good value for money. This one does not break the trend. We have a text that covers the history of Italian armored cars going all the way back to the 1911 war between Italy and Turkey, a war that I must admit I have only the most tiny knowledge. The photos and drawings will be of interest to modelers as well to those of us with a more general interest in the subject.I I had a wish it would be for more detail of the various machines in actual use. For a short book with a low cost this volume is quite satisfactory.

This is a quick, interesting look at Italian armored cars of both World Wars. illustrations are great and there are many black and white photos. It provides the development and history of each armored vehicle. It would have been nice if the book included a first-person narrative or a battle account of these vehicles in action. Maybe that's too hard to come by?

Great topic, great combination of information, history and diagrams. A cool mini book...

I enjoyed the book but thought it could of had more examples of combat uses of the armored cars.

Pictures were great, wish they had more of them. Some of the text, to me, was boring or not that clear. Still a great buy, tho.

About the Author

Andrea Hairston is a Professor of Theatre and Afro-American Studies at Smith College, as well as the Artistic Director of Chrysalis Theatre. Her first novel, Mindscape, which was short-listed for the Philip K. Dick and James Tiptree Awards, was awarded the Carl Brandon Society's Parallax Award. Her plays have been produced at Yale Rep, Rites and Reason, the Kennedy Center, Stage West, and on Public Radio and Television. She has received many awards for her writing and directing, including an NEA Grant to Playwrights, a Ford Foundation grant to collaborate with Senegalese Master Drummer Massamba Diop, and a Shubert Fellowship for Playwriting.

Redwood and Wildfire is different than Hairston's first novel, Mindscape, but still manages to retain some of what intrigued me in that book. It's more grounded than her debut, but still draws from fantastic elements. One could almost imagine that Redwood and others like her might be the ancestors of the griots of Mindscape, if one had the inclination. This book stands at the intersection of history and fantasy, bound together by a love story that avoids falling into the trap of too-sappy romance, and I enjoyed the journey.I especially appreciated the attention to "real world" problems facing Black Southern migrants to the North at the turn of the century--The minstrel shows and moving pictures serving both as livelihood and self-mockery, and everything that entailed. Redwood manages, somehow, but Aidan's time playing [to racial stereotypes] on screen nearly destroys him.And, of course, there are other challenges the characters encounter: alcoholism, [sexual assault], culture shock, racism... Ms. Hairston doesn't flinch from any of it.I went back and forth on the rating for this, between 3 and 4 stars. On the one hand, I had some trouble consistently connecting to the characters (especially Aidan, who I felt alternating pity and fury at in the first parts of the book). On the other hand, they are oh-so-very human and fallible, and the character development so believable, that I can't help but applaud Andrea Hairston's skill.{This Review was Originally Posted to Goodreads on 2017.03.16. This book combines touches of fantasy with a gripping tale about racial divides and struggles at a significant time in US history. It moves from a southern swamp to the sprawling city of Chicago, all the while revealing more and more about its intriguing characters. In some ways the author's style reminds me of another favorite novel, The Night Circus.

Although a bit lengthy, this book makes a strong contribution to the world of multicultural speculative fiction. Hairston's intertexuality (you'll encounter sly jokes and references to early 20th century African-American texts) elevates the novel and gives readers the opportunity to ponder an alternative view of history.

I was captivated by the strength and magic of this book in the opening lines where Redwood and her family are fleeing for their lives in the post Civil War racist south. Redwood grows up knowing that the magic in her separates her from other people, but it is a deep spiritual gift passed on to her. She also knows that Aidan Wildfire, a mountain man of Cherokee and Irish descent is one of the few people like her. Each has lived through horrific events but share a bond that enable them to find the courage to fight for their lives and for the lives of the people they love. They travel through time, across the continent to pursue dreams. This is also a fascinating exploration of the evolution of theater and the roles it presented to non-whites at the turn of the 20th century. Theater becomes Redwood's life and she takes it forward in a new vision of truth and expression, away from the minstrel stereotype. Redwood and Wildfire find salvation in this new vision and in each other in spite of the adversities that confront them in their new lives. Andrea Hairston's use of dialog is wonderful. She captures an innocence and hope that lives in all of us who live in a challenging world of wonder and skepticism. I'm looking forward to her next book!

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I first cracked open Redwood and Wildfire. I was ill prepared for this densely woven, free-spirited kind of writing mixing a horrific lynching, a girl who can catch a hurricane in her hand, stories from an irish/seminole drunkard's life, cooning in Chicago vaudeville, and the kindness of a country doctor lending poetry books to white trash and coloreds in rural Georgia.Running through the prose is the pulsing, visceral awareness of body; skin, color, breath, and blood, in all the characters.We join Redwood Phipps as she loses her mother, grows up in the Georgia swamps as a colored hoodoo gal in a town where that makes her feared by all, and dances around half-Irish/half-Seminole Aidan who tries to make his own place in the world through a fog of haint-haunting and alcohol.Both travel to Chicago where they find their own places as entertainers.This is not an easy book to read; it's definitely for adults. You can't sit down and gulp it. The narrative is a bit opaque sometimes, either due to dialect or the author's fancy, I don't know, but even when the story takes us hard places, you can't give up on Redwood or Aidan or any of their hard-living and hard-used friends.You read to pass through the hard times, to shake your fist at the boneyard baron and do a little hoodoo healing on yourself, no matter your own color or background.I felt as if someone had taken The Color Purple and mixed it with some of the sad-tinged wonder of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude as I read Redwood and Aidan's tale.Definitely something you should read, but only if you're emotionally prepared.This Book's Snack Rating: A handful of pistachios for the sometimes-painful shell of race, violence, and discrimination you crack to get to the honey-sweet nut of Aidan and Redwood's magic inside.
