Review

There is much wisdom to be found in this brilliant yet simple book. The lessons offered by Sakyong Mipham are like spiritual vitamins that will nourish the runner's soul. –Jerry Lynch, Ph.D, author with Al Huang of Spirit of the Dancing Warrior and the best-seller, Thinking Body, Dancing MindRunning With the Mind of Meditation is a delightful and welcome addition to contemplative literature.  We often forget that movement is a natural complement to meditative practice, and helps us avoid what has been called the 'stone Buddha' syndrome. This book is a profound guide to the integration of mind and body."  -Larry Dossey, MD, author of Healing Words: the Power of Premonitions and The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things

I've been running consistently (that is, more than three times per week and for at least twenty miles total) for over thirty years and have completed marathons, ultras, and Ironman triathlon distance races. Until I read this book, I wanted to have inspirational music plugged into my head and constantly searched for new play lists when the current one lost its magic to motivate. After reading this book, instead of seeking a mood created by music in order to have a good run, I now create my own mood or head out looking to see what I can find by being in the moment. There is enough on meditation in this book to quit looking for external stimulus in order to create internal motivation. You can create your own motivation and enjoy running (or any endurance event) without outside assistance beyond what you can perceive from your surroundings, whether in the woods or the city. This book is full of moments when I stopped reading to underline something and nod to myself. Very good read and excellent practical advice. For an amazing read of what is possible in the realm of human endurance, check out The Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei.

After reading Born to Run and Scott Jurek's book Eat and Run, I decided to give Running with the Mind of Meditation a try. This is definitely a unique perspective on running, and Sakyong Mipham devotes an equal amount of the book outlining his technique for achieving "marathon" levels of meditation. I was honestly expecting the book to focus more on running, but the meditation emphasis (that is, non-running meditation while sitting) has been informative and as cheesy as it may be, has changed my life. I now feel more at peace both while running and in general, and can even credit this book with getting me off needing music while running.

Excellent book that applies tibetan buddhist meditation principles to running. It is very well written and the lessons and principles Sakyong shares resonated with me. It is no wonder why he runs over 200 meditation centers across the globe. I truly enjoyed that the book wasn't self-indulgent while being an excellent perspective on one unique persons "running life." A cheap book that's more than worth the price!

I thought this would be about meditation while running, but instead compares and contrasts the two practices. Still a good read, but not a "how to" if that's what you're looking for.

If you are a runner and you have any desire to strengthen and train your mind as well as your body, read this book. That, in fact, is what I valued most in Sakyong Mipham's approach to the topic of meditation. He approaches meditation as a way to strengthen the mind - to improve it's ability to retain focus and to think clearly. His rationale convinced me of the potential merits for meditation that don't have anything to do with reaching Nirvana or attaining some grand level of spiritual enlightenment (although, I do realize those are benefits that are important and real to others).I've been practicing meditation now for over a year using the techniques in this book and I can only say that they've worked for me. I can't imagine not practicing meditation now any more than I can imagine not running or not doing my core work. These things are essential to my life, and I'm very grateful I lucked into this book.Definitely recommended.

This book was a big disappointment to me in that it did not give me what I wanted and what I expected from the description and some of the positive reviews. It does have a lot of helpful information about meditation, and it helped me see for the first time the purpose behind focusing on the breath in meditation. Hence the three stars. I would probably like the author's other books more, the ones that are strictly about meditation. But I expected a book with specific and unique tips and techniques for what to do with your mind while running, and how to enjoy yourself more while running without an MP3. Granted, there is a little bit of this--a very little. The advice on that front is nothing that you haven't already thought of - focus on your breath, focus on your form, notice nature around you, run from signpost to signpost. And a great deal of general talk about mindfulness in all of life, which includes running. If you are considering buying the book for the purpose of enjoying running more without a MP3 player, don't bother. The book does not seem to have a discernible structure, other than in part discussing various stages of meditation and running using animal metaphors, which personally left me flat and I found that aspect tedious. The author starts the book by saying that meditation and running are two separate things, and you don't meditate while you run. Then, throughout, the book jumps back and forth, randomly and pointlessly, between separately talking about meditation and talking about running, and the author's personal experiences with both.

I really enjoyed this book a lot. I'm into meditation, but wanted to get into running. My husband is a runner, but is now going to get into meditation. So we both read this book and got a lot out of it. Excellent book about both running and meditation, and the importance of taking care of both your body and mind. Two thumbs up!

IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU by Gregg Olsen and Rebecca Morris is the best book of Olsen's that I've read. In addition, it's the best book on the true crime case of Susan Powell on the market. As much as I love Ann Rule' s books, IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU surpasses the book which includes her version of this case by far. This is due to the authors having in depth access to the case through a connection with Susan's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox. Thereby an entire other dimension is given to this story's rendering and details.Having followed this case from the first day Susan was reported missing, tragedy is heaped upon tragedy in the storyline's unfolding. Olsen and Morris do a superb job of capturing the sadness, horror, and dismay of the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Susan and the deaths of her two young sons, Braden and Charlie. One of the most tragic aspects of this case is that the Coxes made repeated attempts to warn both law enforcement and CPS that Susan's husband, Josh, (also the main suspect in her disappearance) could prove to be a danger to the children. It was a warning that went unheeded to their horrifying detriment. The moral of this part of the story is never, ever back a narcissist into a corner, because he will win at all costs. And Josh Powell proved to be a diagnosed narcissist through the child custody court case. He was totally underestimated except by those who were closest to Susan and her sons.Ultimately it comes to be known after her disappearance that Susan was in way over her head with the toxic, dysfunctional and sexually perverted Powell family system. Although she trusted her instincts to a degree, she was much to naive a young woman to recognize the depth of depravity surrounding her. This, by far, is one of the most horrific true crime cases I've ever read about.

As I am Susan Powells sister I read the book to to check out the facts of my sister's case. I was impressed with how accurate and well written the information is Gregg and Rebecca did an excellent job telling my family's story. This is the best book I have read so far about my sister. I encourage anyone and everyone to read this book. Although this is a sad story, it is a well written account of my family's struggle.

Gripping story which is very well written by Olsen. Before reading this I had only heard the headlines about this case. The book brings you into the community and the families and all the heartache. What is so shocking is the behavior of the Powell family. Maybe it's not so shocking as shameful of this dysfunctional evil family. They would not cooperate with police, they circled their wagons and kept quiet about what they knew but used the internet to smear the reputation of the missing woman. They cared nothing about Susan or where she was and only wanted to protect their brother Josh. The creepy narcissistic perverted father of Josh Powell, Steve Powell who was convicted on voyeurism for taking pictures of his young neighbors in the bathroom, is still refusing to say what he knows. The brother who committed suicide one year after Josh's murder suicide rampage, probably helped dispose of the body and he died keeping his secrets. Maybe if the Powells had cooperated, the children would not have been murdered as Josh would have been arrested before that horrible day. Some reviewers speak ill of the social worker who took the children to visit their father that fateful day, but she was doing what the court mandated. The judge and legal system should have listened to the many warnings given by Susan's father and the Cox family attorney.

This is a relatively well-written story about a young wife and mother who goes missing and presumed dead, though her body was never found, and the subsequent murder-suicide of her husband, who was a person of interest, and their two children. There is little doubt, in my mind, that the husband murdered her and was later aided by his brother and possibly his father in the cover-up of his crime. What stands out in this book is the quality of the police work, which I thought left a lot to be desired, and the fact that the children were left in the care and custody of the suspect, despite the fact that they there were signs that he was not providing a suitable home nor a suitable environment. Moreover, the suspect's father, with whom he was living for a time, had serious sexual issues of a disturbing nature, many centered around the children's mother. It is a sad story all around, and a bit unsatisfying, due to the fact that the reader does not know what exactly happened to this young wife and mother other than she was presumably murdered. It is also quite frustrating to know that the children were kept with their father. The book may have had a different ending, if the court had only done what would have been in the best interest of the children.

'If I Can't Have You' is one of those books in the True Crime genre that cause you to question whether you're reading real life or fiction. The sick part about this case is that with every turn you can only wish it was fiction. Not only was Josh obviously warped, his family/pedo dad was a disgrace. Even worse, due to what police continued to believe was a 'lack of sufficient evidence', a psychopath was able to wipe out his entire family. Holy crap, have I woken up yet?!The only criticism I have is that it seemed repetitive and long winded in parts where it needn't have been. Perhaps it's because I knew how the story would end, but nonetheless, I found this book to be especially dry at times. If you've yet to read about the Powell case, I do recommend 'If I Can't Have You'. I don't know about others, but from Susan's disappearance to the way her poor boys met their end, I was questioning law enforcement's strategy and involvement. It was bad enough that Susan paid with her life... yet a few years later, law enforcement and the justice system allowed her two sons to also die at the hands of their father. Mind blowing... And tragically, too little, too late.
