The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler precisely explains and demonstrates the 34 Contrology/Pilates matwork exercises originally conceived and optimized by Joseph Pilates. This book has been my single Pilates reference for almost a decade, and will provide anyone who is interested in learning this exercise set with a complete, self-contained guide.For these reasons I have resisted all other Pilates books and DVD materials, opting instead to learn from Brooke almost religiously. I recently decided it would be interesting at the least, if not incredibly useful, to learn the matwork series from Joseph's own images and words. This book contains this set, as originally published in his 1945 book "Pilates' Return to Life Through Contrology." Pilates' 1934 book "Your Health" is also included, giving the reader a range of information direct from the creator himself.What I found is that, while some of this information may translate to no personal insights of my own, having it at hand and being able to cross-reference modern theory with the theory as used to develop the exercises themselves is very useful. And being able to watch Pilates do the 34 matwork exercises gives a very different perspective from what I see in Brooke's book, showing a wider range of motion and variations that yield different results.I cannot speak to the third part of this book, which is modern information on new techniques, tools, and ideas, but I can say that anyone actively seeking to master the 34 Contrology/Pilates matwork exercises would benefit from the information pertaining to this. This alone makes this book worth more than its cost.

I love the book, I'm pretty much convinced Pilates was a genius. Both his books are included, with the original images. Book arrived quickly (though delivery was over twice the book price for intl.) and the book is, in fact, new - just some scratches on the cover, you can tell it's never been read:). I'm extremely happy with my purchase!

The philosophy of Joe Pilates on physical, mental, and emotional health is very interesting. He truly was ahead of his time. It is so 21st century thinking. Actually he laid the groundwork for it.

I strongly recommend this book for both instructors and students of Pilates. This is a serious book that belongs on the shelves of instructors. At the same time, it is easy enough to follow so that serious students of Pilates will be able to benefit from it as well.I was asked to review Pilates Evolution The 21st Century. I was glad to do it because I've enjoyed learning about and practicing Pilates for years, long before it became a popular form of exercise practiced by celebrities. Pilates was a genius with a passion for correcting fitness problems. I really didn't expect to find more about the Pilates theories and principles than I had found over the years in all of the many books and videos I've enjoyed. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned from this book. This one is a keeper for me.If you are interested in the hows and whys, this book just may be exactly what you are looking for. It goes back to the source - Joseph Hubertus Pilates.I didn't know that the old material here existed in a form that could be published. I had only seen a little here and there about the origins of Pilates. I found the new section to be expertly demonstrated, with clear and concise instructions.Part I is the "1934 Edition of Joseph Pilates' Your Health." That section was amazing. I've seen some of the old pictures of Joseph Hubertus Pilates before, but had never seen any of his writing. Very interesting, definitely worth reading if you are interested in learning about the passion behind Pilates' practical approach to fitness. I think of it as Pilates' description of the problem he is trying to solve.Part II is the "1945 Edition of Joseph Pilates' Return to Life through Contrology." Here I found definitions relating to Pilates' proposed practical solutions to the problems he described in Part I.The historical practical section includes the best Pilates instruction I've ever seen, clear and concise, easy to follow.Part III is excellent. It's the "21st Century Pilates Evolution." I want to describe this section in detail, because this is where many of us will be spending most of our time.It starts with a very brief but informative history which puts it all into perspective and then brings us up to the present time.Especially helpful were the paragraphs on specific benefits to each section. As a student, I like to know WHY I am doing what I am doing.Chapter 1: Pilates Magic Circle. I have to admit that I've had my Magic Circle for many years and never really could get a feel for it. This is the best practical set of detailed instructions and demonstration than I have seen.Chapter 2: WeightsChapter 3: Seated PilatesChapter 4: Mini Stability BallChapter 5: Elastic ResistanceChapter 6: Standing WorkChapter 7: Circular WorkChapter 8: Unstable SurfacesChapter 9: Fusion ClassesChapter 10: Sports Specific PilatesAppendix A: Glossary of PIlates' termsAppendix B: IndexThere are RESOURCE sections all throughout the book for recommended books and DVDs. It's going to take me quite some time to practice all that I've learned in this book, but I may check out some of the resources listed eventually. Right now I have a renewed enthusiasm about Pilates brought out of history to the present time.

For the most part I enjoyed this book, but there was something that bothered me about it. I was about halfway through before I realized that by writing it from Theo's point of view, the author removed the reader too far from the real protagonist, who was not Theo but Phoe, the mysterious female who befriends Theo. The concept was interesting-- a society maintained on an oasis surrounded by goo after humans presumably destroy the earth. The survivors create a rigid society with no tolerance for individual thought or questioning any type of authority. The people have the vast historical knowledge of all of earth's books, movies, and knowledge available to them; they just aren't allowed to actually think about any of it.The book is weakened because Theo is so seldom in control of his actions. He is manipulated, led and often completely controlled by Phoe who frequently takes over control of his body and who is almost always with him, telling him what is happening, how to respond and what to do next. Theo seems to be little more than a puppet, cting at the whim of the puppeteer. Actually, one of the parts of the books that I most enjoyed was when Theo was cut off from Phoe and had to act totally on his own.That's why I think the book would have been stronger had it been written from Phoe's POV. It certainly would have been much more interesting and would not have had as much of a deux ex machina feel. I was also disappointed in the ending of the book. It kind of left me with a combo feeling of "Duh" and "So?" When all was said and done, I was left wondering what was the point of the entire trilogy.

A God awful waste of time. The main characters are 24 years old but act and sound like junior high schoolers. Immature ones, at that. Most of the story consists of descriptions of fights and hand to hand combat, depicted in excruciating detail, one, after another, after another, to the nth degree. Much of the action takes place in various permutations of virtual reality environments where the abilities of the characters and the physical laws change at the author's whim, which completely kills any build up of suspense. Is a character falling to his death? No matter. At any moment his ai girlfriend to pop into his reality and rescue him, or he'll die but be redirected, or some damn thing. Who cares? No rules means no stakes.The writing itself was painfully clunky. With horribly garbled mixed metaphors like "I’m a muddy roller coaster of needs and emotions, with Phoe at the epicenter" I found it really hard to continue reading. Only curiosity about the ultimate nature of the evolved Earth, post singularity kept me turning pages.

Very boring and undeveloped. I kept waiting for it to become more engaging and interesting, but the entire trilogy is basically a conversation between the lead character and a voice in his head who knows his thoughts before he speaks and gets incredibly annoying to read. And there are some very gory battle scenes that are hard to follow thrown in every couple of chapters. Overall it seemed very amateurish and silly.

Disclaimer: I received this product for free in return for an honest unbiased review.Ug.Seriously.I hate to be so negative, but it was just so......Ug. Theo is one of the most annoying characters I've ever had to follow through more than one book. Did I mention Pho? Yeah....their relationship isn't awkward at all (please note my deep sarcasm). He's in love with his spaceship. The story is almost like a split personality wrote it. A teenage boy who wants robots, space and explosions, then a chick, who just wants a little romance and 'brains'. I had a really hard time often understanding what was happening from the various screen/reality shifts. The author(s) didn't do a good job of making sure I understood where or why I was in any particular location with Theo.While the plots is unique, it is repetitive. I just can't seem to understand the basis of the story, what happened to Earthy, why Oasis is around, the Goo, the elders and society. I had hoped it all would make sense by book 3, but it did not. The character seems to repeat the same thing (plot line)...through all three books.This is a book for children....minus the cussing and the awkward romance.#TheLastHumans

The last human series is a great series you can read. The most distinguished characteristic is the in-depth explanation Phoe :) gives. It is brimming with a lot of scientific theories and terms. All of the books end individually with mind blowing twists, while in the way whole series concludes is breathtaking as well as intriguing. The series leaves me (and I guess every other reader) spellbounded. The most SCIENTIFIC fiction series ever. Highly recommended for teens. Though it contains strong language, but it nonetheless enhances the seriousness of any particular situation. Will be remained on the top of every other Science fiction thriller I have ever read.Also recommended (I have read)-1. Sorcery code duology2. Mind dimensions series

A little weird with the computer and main character relationship. The main character's fights went on and on and on...and on. I often thought that the author discovered words and tried to use all of them for the fight sequences. It was interesting enough to keep reading but often I wondered if I could make it through.

Just OK. It goes on and on with fights and new venues like a video game. A rather old and tired premise. Couldn't wait for it to end.

As I read this book, I was quite frustrated because it was more like a poor video game requiring players to constantly fight and kill bosses. The good guy in this book, like most modern heroes is beat up royally before claiming victory. It was not as I expected and not as reviewed. Not a very good book, thanks.

This is a wonderful book. There are several good books put out on the issue of loss, grief, evil, and suffering, but few engage the topic as Abraham does. He begins with a personal story of loss in which he describes the emotional and cognitive state that he and his family were in during the time of grief. This sets a platform for the rest of the book. Haurewas' assessment is accurate, this is not an easy read, but there is a lot of wisdom to be gained by reading this book. My favorite chapters were "Life after Death, Divine Revelation, and Reason" and "Death and the Death of Christ." These two chapter were quite powerful. The author provides great insight in the last few pages that approach suffering from a more pastoral perspective. I wish he would have lingered there for a few more pages, but nonetheless the book is worth having. I give it 4/5 simply because of the readability. In some parts, it can tough to keep up. At this point, Amazon does not have an image so I have attached one of the cover.

I enjoy Tillich. This is a good summary of his theology and how it relates to today's situation in culture

Mr. Wall lays out the straight story on teaching ESL in some of the best countries in which to do so. I wish I had read this before I went to teach ESL in Japan. There's lots of uncertainty about your first ESL job, and this book answers the questions most new ESL teachers will have. Don't just accept the answers of the employers who are trying to hire and perhaps (god forbid) cheat you. Three bucks is not much to pay to arm yourself with the essential information about teaching in these countries, all in one place. I just wish Mr. Wall had added a section on China!

Embarrassing. The author taught English? I feel sorry for his students. His spelling and grammar is atrocious. This book has no credibility at all since, for example, the author doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're". Even my Thai students grasped this with ease.

This book has some very useful content about countries he may have taught in. However, the author is lacking in many basic English spelling and grammar skills, which makes it difficult to believe he is indeed an English teacher who has taught in several countries. Frankly I couldn't even read it. I had to skim through it. The use of "they're", "their", and "there", as well as the difference between "to" and "too", are unknown to the author.I think it's great for people to share their experiences with others to help those who are interested better understand how "the system works" (basically what I felt the author attempted to do in this work). However, this particular author also wrote a section on Japan, a country which (according to his "about the author" section) he has never lived in. Since I was recently hired to teach in Japan, and picked this book up for the soul purpose of learning about ESL teaching in Japan, I was very disappointed.

My middle-schooler actually liked this book!!!My son and I struggled partway through some incredibly boring books on the middle school reading list. When it became apparent that he wouldn't finish on time, I desperately looked for something else on the list, knowing that whatever we picked would have to be read morning, noon, and night for him to finish on time. Thank goodness for this book! The story is fascinating and well told, and we thoroughly enjoyed a weekend of binge-reading it.Even little brother read and enjoyed it with us - voluntarily.This a great read for young and old, which I plan to pass on to their older sister and my parents.

William's world was not my world. His life was filled with ancient magic and mystery, security was having sacks of corn and not having them was death. A delicious treat wasn't got at the local ice cream shop, but by catching delicious flying ants or trapping birds between a slingshot and a stack of homemade Adobe bricks. Going to school was far from guaranteed, and when famine meant the teachers and students were starving to death, in the schools, it also wasn't a place to find food or shelter. The more William lost, the more he craved. He wanted to learn and when he was blocked from school by his inability to pay the fees, he found the free library, and a book about energy. He figured out how a windmill worked, and "I tried and I made it" barely covers the amazing fact that he built it from recycled trash, only after building the tools he needed, no drill? Heat a nail to red hot and insert it in a corn cob for a handle. The windmill was only one step in his understanding. He had to figure out AC/DC and voltage and insulation, he had to figure out how to make a generator and switches and a circuit breaker to keep his created electricity from burning down the grass roofed hut they lived in, and when his wires collapsed the termite riddled supports of the roof he had to call in the chickens to get the termites out of his bedding. He blended science with hard work and creativity to bring light and a water pump to his village, and to make the world realize that even the starving kids in Malawi have much to offer.

This was a gift for my 10 year old grandson. He reads a lot and above his grade level. When he saw the title he wasn't impressed and thought he wouldn't like it, but once he started reading it he couldn't stop. He apologized later because he had said he wouldn't like it, but really loved it.

My 10 year old loved this book. He said it was a very easy read and thought his 8 year old brother could easily read it. He found the story fascinating and inspiring. The main character and their community go through many hardships. It was eye opening to my son, reading about a life so different from his own, yet it was also much the same. Inspiring because a kid was able to take spare bike parts and make a windmill. It was a very “kids can do big things” message for my son. He loved retelling the story over dinner. At the end, my son declared this to be his new favorite book.

This story is a factual account of a young boy's search for a way to help his village. His interest in windmills to generate electricity led him to his community llibrary where he researched the idea. I liked the way the story leads the reader from problem, to idea, to research, to solution, and finally extension. In education, teachers want young students to be able to do all of these steps: recognize, define, apply, evaluate, design, extend. All the lessons are incorporated in one story! The fact that this inventor was so young also helps students to realize that you don't have to be famous, rich, highly educated, or an adult to do something of great importance. The cultural part of the story suggests to students that not everyone has the advantages that we, as Americans, are able to enjoy, such as having water on demand. The book's mixture of illustration and authenic photos make the story more realistic, so students can realize that this event actually occurred and that the boy in the story is real. This makes it easier to identify with the boy...his life, his interests, his actions, his dreams. I bought this book for my eight-year-old grandson, but it could be read to a younger audience, and I would greatly recommend it to all age groups.

Young reader edition has almost the same number of pages but print is larger and vocabulary is a little more accessible (though not "dumbed down"). My 3rd grade son enjoys reading so he chose it for a non-fiction book report and loved it. Then I read it and loved it too. Of course the famine is very difficult and sad, but the can-do attitude of author William is remarkable. He's an admirable, inspiring problem solver. My son could look at the world through a very different perspective which I think is priceless. We're now getting the rest of the family to read it too. Highly recommended. (FYI...The first chapter tells of witch doctors and magic which may require some explanation for very literal young readers, and I think the book improves quickly after this early section.)

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind This is a story of a young man’s thirst for knowledge and an indomitable spirit. Among the hardships of his local village, poverty, and devastating famine, William Kamkwamba endured and succeeded. The author’s spirit and determination carries him through all of these challenges. Along the way we get a picture of the crushing poverty of this region in Africa. There is a picture here that points the way for the promise of new technology. Implementing these new technologies in the creation of wind driven electricity, creative means in the pumping of fresh water and the utilization of biogas production for fuel points the way for a brighter future for the impoverished people in Africa and elsewhere I would like to point out that, perhaps, the donor nations should reconsider some of their project requirements. It may be that small scale projects down at the village level might bring promising results without all of the waste and corruption of large scale development projects that promise so much and often deliver so little. This book is an inspiring read.

I love the God Gave Us books so I was excited to review God Gave Us Thankful Hearts by Lisa Tawn Bergren. I love the illustrations in this book don by David Holm. They are so pretty and well done. They are a fun way to discuss the story as we are reading it together.This book teaches children to be thankful no matter the situation. It teaches us to find things to be thankful for even when we feel disappointment in situations around us. It is good for everyday thankfulness but also a good supplement for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.The cover is a beautiful hard cover and the pages are printed on nice thick paper. It is very well made and will make a cute addition to your child’s library.I highly recommend this book to anyone with small children who wants to teach them to be thankful. It is a Christian themed book. I received this book at no charge from [...] in exchange for an honest review.

I bought this for my 6 yr old granddaughter, who knows nothing about God. It's a very sweet book expressing all the things we should be thankful for not just on Thanksgiving, but everyday. I did find it a bit too wordy for someone so young and unchurched , so I netted out each page to just a sentence or two. I didn't want her to "tune out" because she was getting bored. I am happy to say that I succeeded in helping her to understand the importance of being thankful to God for all her blessings.

I would guess that some of the reviews are written by friends of the author because some of the four star reviews are a bit negative and give the overall rating a false 5 star rating. For me, a five star children's book has to be really good, a favorite or a classic, but I don't think this is up to that quality. I thought it was too long and that there was too much complaining from the kid in the story. It was almost depressing. I spent a long time waiting to get the right thanksgiving book for my kids this year, but only read this once and wish I didn't buy it. I thought it was related to a Christmas book we like, but that one is called God Bless Our Christmas not God Gave Us Christmas. She still seems like a good story teller and the illustrations are nice. I like the idea of a book like this, so I still give it 3 stars. If your kid is a complainer, this might be good for him. Or it might backfire, not sure.

This is a beautifully written story with cute illustrations that reminds us to be thankful even when things aren't quite the way we'd like. I bought it to read to my one year old grandson and we all love it. This is a story that is appropriate for "children" of all ages. I will definitely be purchasing other stories in this series!

Our family loves this book series. The illustrations are beautiful and fun for kids as they include animal characters, but also very simple and clear in explaining a message of faith. The author has done a great job taking big faith issues and writing them out for small children to understand and apply. It also provides phrases and concepts to parents to consider using during daily life. We gave this to our kids at Thanksgiving and it is still a chosen bedtime book months later. We love God Gave Us... books!

I'm a preschool teacher and I'm always buying new books to read to the children in my classroom. This book is very cute and I like the message it gives, but it's a little too wordy for my 3 year olds attention span.

This beautiful book is wonder-filled is happy to give as a gift!!!The story line is precious and heart-warming and delightful.God gives us so many blessings and thus book talks about Our Grateful and Thankful Hearts.

Another great "God Gave Us" book by Lisa Bergren. I bought 4 of them and can't praise them enough.

I've read a couple of these "God gave us.." books. This one is just as sweet. I love the illustrations so much. Such a good book, and reminder to kids these days to be thankful! Very, very sweet.
