During the mid 1980s through the late 1980s computer science students at University of California, Berkeley had difficult time understanding why change came quickly and rarely documented. The personal computer had just debut in 1983, Users wanting to "bring their work home" was testing the waters. The programmers remaining with legacy hardware concentrated on the stable hardware standard. The programmers going forward wanted to support "the new and the frontier." NetBSD was not well documented because it was a "hands on" server operating system. FreeBSD was the rock and supported desktops. And OpenBSD was something in between. The programmers went their separate ways. The students were at lost what to follow.Now decades later the User can now have in one reliable volume what is accepted and what is good coding habits. The book covers the usual programming features and usability as pertained to that time period. Still relevant when a new programmer fresh from academia wanting to run in the wild of cyber coding. Proper coding is not taught in academia. That is eventually learned over time on the job. Therefore most software programming is politely spoken of as "sloppy."This book is well written and supported by relevant material for the programmer to be. A great book to start with to learn FreeBSD !!!

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I am not a kernel hacker by any means. I can't even program my way out of a wet paper bag (a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea). However, as a sysadmin, I firmly believe that you should have a solid understanding of whatever OS platform that you are working on. For me, that would be Solaris and Linux. So why am I recommending a BSD book? Well, BSD has a rich heritage in UNIX. It was the first UNIX to incorporate TCP/IP and it gave us sockets, FFS, and a rich set of tools (csh). FreeBSD, the most well-known of the *BSD family, powers some of the largest sites in the world (e.g., yahoo). It is an extremely robust and stable Operating System. It is also much more elegant than Linux.This book is the ultimate BSD bible. It is written by some of the Gods of BSD and is extremely rigorous. I've made my way through this book twice and I've learned something new each time. If you put the effort into this book, you will come out with a greater understanding of UNIX in general. If you are a BSD hacker, then you should already have this book. This is a hard read, but it is really worth your time and effort to read this book at least once.

The book is good, no doubt about it. And it covers a big gap in the Unix world. It helped me numerous times to understand how things work in the kernel of FreeBSD. But, and there is a big but here, the book does not contain even a single line of code. Strange for a book that is supposed to describe a kernel. There are a few instances of pseudo-code here and there but nothing more. The book gives you the big picture, describes the various parts of the kernel like virtual memory, scheduling, filesystems but it is too descriptive in my opinion. I would like to see instead of long descriptions some real kernel code. Ofcourse you may argue that you can find all the source code in the world in FreeBSD, but thats different. Its not a book for beginners, you should already have read some other Operating System book first before you dig in this one as the authors themselves agree. Bottomline: good book but too theoretical for my taste. I recommend it only to the serious reader. Its not a bed time book. You need to work your brain to make the connection.

While this book has been written by some of the best in the UNIX arena, their strong focus on packing a lot of content into these pages at times can prove a burden to the reader.Reading through the chapters, it appears that the book could have been rendered more readable if a knowledgeable technical editor had put the finishing touches on it.Nevertheless, even though it takes a bit of time to get used to the different writing styles and differences in quality of several chapters, this books is a well of insights into the internal workings of BSD 4.4 and its derivatives (like Mac OS X).In order to gain the most from this title, I strongly urge interested readers to already have worked their way through Maurice J. Bach's "The Design of the UNIX Operating System".

The results speak for themselves, and the Ave Maria fund has enjoyed a high degree of success since its inception.The book is full of solid advice on how to select potential investment opportunities. The concept of Value Investing, which Mr. Schwartz describes as “thoroughly grounded in the principle of ownership,” strikes me as a brilliant way to evaluate a company. As an investor you consider every aspect of the business, pro and con, before buying in. Then once you have committed to the company, you are never disturbed by fluctuations in value; you stay in for the long run, like an owner. Interestingly, and with a wonderfully open mind, the author basically gives Warren Buffett credit for the concept.I happen to be Catholic myself, and while I am not necessarily in total lockstep with every one of Mr. Schwartz’s views, I can appreciate both the source and moral sincerity of them. I can also appreciate the idea that expressing your deeply held beliefs through your investment strategy is a benign and powerful way to shape the world in a ethically positive direction. You will not regret reading this book.

This book offers an in-depth look at a form of investing, called “Morally Responsible Investing”, which has been founded for investors with two very specific beliefs in common, although most specifically investors with Catholic values. It is definitely a niche book, but one which has been written well and will help its readers make significant strides toward their wealth goal without compromising their core values.In God We Trust introduces readers to “Morally Responsible Investing”, which is an investment strategy that avoids investing in companies which support abortion and pornography. Through a mixture of personal anecdotes, history, and financial and moral advice, he takes readers through the concept, including what Morally Responsible Investing is, what it takes to partake in this investment practice, how it is different from Socially Responsible Investing, and the benefits of investing in this manner. Along the way, the author shows readers his own history with Morally Responsible Investing and how Ave Maria Mutual funds, the author’s investment fund which utilizes Morally Responsible Investing, has reached its current level of success.While the advice on investing in companies with values that match one’s own could be useful for any investor of any belief system, the vast majority of this book and the Morally Responsible Investing concept are for pro-life, anti-pornography readers. They do not have to be Catholic—in fact, the author flat out says that they do not discriminate at his fund so long as you hold these two specific values—but those whose values best align with Catholic teachings will get the most out of this book. Due to the religious, political, social, and financial views expressed by the author, more liberal readers will probably want to avoid this book, but ones who are interested in better understanding people with these beliefs might want to peruse it as well.In general, this book is great for its niche. It contains a wealth of information and is easy to follow for the average reader. The organization leaves something to be desired in regards to the placement of the resources, but it is otherwise well thought-out and well structured. Financial/social liberals and those who do not follow the two values listed above will probably find a lot to argue with here and so should avoid In God We Trust. However, the target audience—most especially Catholics—will want to snag a copy.

Capitalism vs. socialism; Pro-life vs. abortion and the culture of death; and investing in a morally responsible way. This book hits on three hot-button topics! It's well-written and a compelling story that weaves in elements from our country's founding fathers and values for which were once appreciated and shared by all. No longer the case, there is a worrying and growing infatuation with socialism among the liberal elite and the younger generation. Unfortunately, they do not recognize that historically speaking socialism has never worked! And prospectively speaking, will never work. It's dehumanizing and removes any and all incentives to work hard and be rewarded for hard work. I highly recommend this book.

Later in the book, Schwartz delves into the repeated historical failures of socialism, and explains why free-market capitalism is always the best path to prosperity. With a forward by former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz, this is a fascinating book that is a must read for anyone interested in the pursuit of strong investment returns, while also supporting one's religious beliefs.

Open up the option's for nearby places to kayak. I found many places where I could put in easily paddle for a hour or so and go home. More options than I imagined.

A handy sized, informative guide to rivers in our area. We have used this to plan numerous trips on rivers and have found the guide to be (relatively) accurate and easy to use. Having said that, we discovered (duh!) that rivers change over time and that this guide is a great STARTING point for trip planning. Good scouting and maybe talking to people with experience on the river in question are valuable parts of good trip prep. There is a website for the book where people can submit changes or inaccuracies that they have discovered - this helps to keep the guide current. All in all one of the best we've looked at.

Purchased this book so my wife and I could do some canoeing in Connecticut. The book is pretty good. Some of the rivers they mention are not deep enough in the rainy season to float a boat. One example is the river in Devils Hopyard. The book lists it as a deep enough river to paddle on. I hike there all the time. It has never been deep enough for a trip on the river. To shallow, and narrow.

If you are going to canoe in Maine, this book is a good starting point to orient yourself.

Required reading for those with boats in or visiting Maine. Thank you AMC.

ok book for basic travel around river play in maine. no maps. need a gazetteer to go with it. price is right.

A ton of great info to have if there are rivers you have been thinking about exploring but werent sure if it was worth the drive. I bought it just for 2 rivers, nad now am hoping to check out 2 other ones this summer. A kind of guide you can browse through and get ideas from.

Very usefull. Could be a little clearer. You must read carefully. May not be for the novice.

Such a cute read! I'm from Maryland and if you believe, half of us feel we are Southern and half do not! So I was rightly confused all of my 48 years though my heart always ached for Southern wisdom. After reading this book, and with all of the clever sayings dotted throughout it's official, I'm southern through and through! The book is well-written and is a true homage to the the authors mom. It flows from her youth to her own marriage & children at a fast pace. It's a delightful read. The only negatives is it references some things from 2007 the big Britney Spears shaving her head, and that dated the book. Editor should have caught that, especially for advice books, as they are usually read & reread for years to come. She also didn't touch on the subject of men do NOT do women's work at all ever in the South. We all know that, so OWN it! It's okay, it's charming! I can't wait to read her other books. And I will just keep it to myself that yes Marylanders put Old Bay on everything! And is usually the secret ingredient in casseroles, fried chicken, and deviled eggs! Hon!

Absolutely loved this book! I’m not southern, unless I can claim being from Southern California. A lot of this book struck home from my own mother. I could hear her saying those very things!

I took these books to a family reunion, and they kept disappearing, until I heard a crowd laughing. That's how I tracked my books!

Having been born in the South and raised by a Southern family...I find this book hilarious! I can hear my mother's voice in nearly every line!

Great book, and full of laughter and great recipes. If you are a southern girl from the 1950's on up you will love reading this book and laughing !!

Shellie took me back home with her wonderful recounts of Southernisms. Although I grew up in the same generation as her daughter, many of those Southern sayings stand the test of time. She is witty, charming, and wise. A true Southern Belle who makes you feel just as welcome in her book as she would her home. The recipes as the end of each chapter are just icing on the cake.

If you were raised in the South, you should have written this book. You have lived it no doubt! So many memories of things mamma and grandma would say. It's a fun read and she adds some interesting recipes as well. Easy breezy summer read.

So funny and reminiscent of my life growing up with a southern mama. Lots of laughs and some recipes also.

There wasn’t anything that I didn’t like. But everything was so right about this book. The testimonies to encourage you t believe how important it is to daily spend time wth the Father in communion not only for yourself but others.

The first chapter was/is awesome, can't wait to read the whole book. The truth of communion has been hidden from many of us for years. I am thinking this book will help me realize what I have been missing.To me it is like having a secret weapon but never spiritually prophetically "pulling the trigger" so to speak in proclaiming the events of The Cross to our spiritual enemies.(just wish the whole book was available on Kindle)
