The author presents an excellent synthesis of the available literature, providing a concise, yet thorough overview of the problem of how to find longitude at sea and its solution by developing and using accurate timekeepers. All the major personalities involved are discussed - John Harrison - the first to design and make a practical sea clock and his hard-fought `battles' with The Board of Longitude - subsequent important developments in England and France, such as by Arnold and Earnshaw - and their rivalries - and to the `finished' design that emerged in the nineteenth century.Technical descriptions are carefully explained and carried through to make it easy to understand, which provides a good basis for further reading, and a thorough description, with diagrams, is provided to explain the workings of a chronometer. There is also a look at how the chronometer-making industry was organized in the UK and at some of the most important makers in Europe and the USA, and a section on chronometer maintenance. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs and drawings - and has a few nuggets of rare information - such as the necessity of smuggling pinion jewels out of France to Spain during World War II, which were then sent to the U.K. for use in the all-important making of chronometers that were so necessary for the war effort.

A most informative and enjoyable book. The chronometer makers were superlative craftsmen indeed!

Owning a Hamilton model 22 chronometer, I found that this was an excellent source of information, beyond Wikipedia. Very good illustrations. Book was in pristine condition and even autographed!

It’s a book, I wanted the clock!

Excellent, in depth explanation of all aspects of a Marine Chronometer that shows the knowledge of the author. Highly recommended for those who have interest in this kind of chronometers.

Enggaing book. New.

A great book for the introduction to sea navigation and the history of time instruments which assisted in it. Very well researched and written by a truly qualified author on the subject. Best choice for new to the subject students and excellent refresher for those who have some experience in the area.

Chinese Street Food: Small Bites, Classic Recipes, and Harrowing Tales Across the Middle Kingdom, by Howie Southworth Greg Matza

Review

"Street cuisine is 'quickly changing yet deeply rooted in tradition,' the authors write, and this is made evident across 10 chapters that combine breezy bits of travel writing and food history with a vast variety of xiao chi, or 'small eats.' . . . Augmented with 100 on-location photos, this lively cookbook brings a distant land into deliciously sharp focus." —Publishers Weekly “Most recipe collections aren’t entertaining. They tell a story—about the chef, the cuisine, a restaurant or two—then spill the not-so-proverbial beans. Southworth and Matza . . . take readers on a journey into China. We peer inside little towns (like those in rural Yunnan Province) and big—and bigger—cities (Chengdu, Xi’an, and Beijing) and meander through alleyways and little-known streets to find the best bites in China.” —Booklist "Chinese Street Food is brimming with history, food lore, and recipes that take you on a culinary journey outside of the restaurant and into the streets of regional China. Authentic flavors and techniques explode onto the page in a way that first make you salivate, then motivate to roll up your sleeves and get cooking." —Chef Lee Anne Wong "This book is an inspiring culinary atlas of China, an enticing guide to eat your way through China, street by street." —Martin Yan, Yan Can Cook "From noodles to steamed buns, traditional dishes and sweets, Chinese Street Food is a true celebration of Chinese cuisine. Howie and Greg's experiences and travels take you on a tour of Chinese street food stalls and provide a true authenticity these dishes deserve. Peace and Good Eating." —Chef Ming Tsai "Howie and Greg have long been my dynamic duo when it comes to introducing the gastronomic splendor of regional Chinese cuisines, complete with juicy and nourishing vignettes from five thousand years of history." —Laszlo Montgomery, host of The China History Podcast "Who better to guide us than Howie Southworth and Greg Matza, whose love and excitement brings Chinese street food alive with carefully crafted recipes you can make in your own kitchen?" —Chef Ken Hom, OBE, author and TV presenter "There is nothing like the sights, sounds, and smells of street food in China! Howie and Greg tap into that electricity and condense it into a book where, with each picture and recipe, my mouth waters and my senses are stirred." —Megan McCormick, TV presenter, Globe Trekker "Reading all these stories really takes me back to the amazing trip I took with Howie and Greg. I can't wait to recreate the spicy crayfish that we enjoyed after visiting the Forbidden City. So good!" —Ray Hechavarria, the guy on page 141

The three things I enjoy most about these cook books from Howie Southworth and Greg Matza:1) The stories and comments about the recipes are wonderfully entertaining. i.e. Mantou (Steamed "Barbarian Head" Buns) - It was so fun to learn about the history of how this delicious bun got its name. This book in particular is wonderful because I find Chinese food delicious and the culture wonderful.2) The recipes are relatively easy to make. Clear directions.3) The photos are beautiful and make me want to cook and eat and share.I've bough three cookbooks from these fine cooks/writers and I am pleased with all three. I've even bought a couple more to give out as gifts.

I lived in China for several years and travel back 4-5 times a year, so I’m well versed in a Chinese street food. I’m particularly enamored by the food of North-central China (Xi’an, what’s up?!), and this book really brings these food to life with vibrant photos and lively and entertaining stories about each dish. What’s more, the recipes are actually doable and not intimidating. I cannot wait to try out some of my favorite dishes at home! One note - be ready to be super hungry looking at these photos, they are quite enticing. Congratulations to the authors for successfully pulling off a hard to accomplish feat - capturing the diversity and complexity of Chinese street food.

How is it possible that I have never stumbled across so engaging, so interesting, so adventurous a cookbook as “Chinese Street Foods.”Don’t get me wrong. Although it is my favorite, it is not perfect. Minor, very minor, formatting issues are evident, wherein an instruction or an ingredient fails to remain on the same page as all others, unless one adjusts font size frequently.Another point that would be helpful would be to include nutritional information with each item. Afflicted with Type 2 Diabetes, and suffering from being about three feet too short for my weight, I have learned to pay strict attention to what I consume as I continue to shed my old self…Other than those two points, read on to learn what I loved about this entry into the culinary world.BLUSH FACTOR: No worries here.ADVENTURE: Yeah, aside from Anthony Bourdain, this is that rare cookbook that quenches that desire for adventure.POV: First person.SOUL: Yes. As much soul as it is possible for a cookbook to possess.THE WRITING FLOW:ExcerptI’m posting a VERY short excerpt in this review, because I want to show the world how GREAT cookbooks can be written that go beyond simply listing ingredients, but that entice us to learn…This is NOT the most interesting piece. I am posting it, but there are so many interesting tidbits sprinkled throughout “Chinese Street Food” that I wanted to display a ‘typical’ story. I’m also posting screen shots of this recipe so you can see why I LOVE this cookbook.‘…There are a number of ways that the Chinese refer to what we’ve come to know as the huntun, or “wonton,” which is close to the Cantonese pronunciation. Even though written Chinese is common between Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, in this case, they surprisingly use different characters for the same food. In Mandarin, huntun can mean “chaos,” and in Cantonese, wonton means “swallowing clouds,” which we find to be more fun. Where most of this book is based upon Mandarin names for street food, this is an exception that’s impossible to pass up.You see, wonton is one of the most poetic names for a Chinese dish we’ve ever encountered, and as a bonus, it’s a double entendre! Cloud-like pillows of pasta, swallowing a tiny bit of ground meat filling? Or, is the diner swallowing these clouds as they enjoy a delicately delicious bowl? In reality, wontons in the US often are actually tangjiao, or dumplings in soup under a more recognizable name. They typically have meatball-volumed filling inside a thick skin. In China, huntun are a study in minimalism. Very thin pasta sheets, with a tiny bit of meat filling, such that when they are cooked, they float gently atop the clear soup, like, well, clouds. Swallow them.Southworth, Howie. Chinese Street Food: Small Bites, Classic Recipes, and Harrowing Tales Across the Middle Kingdom (Kindle Locations 481-490). Skyhorse Publishing. Kindle Edition.BOTTOM LINEMy favorite cookbook. In part, because the foods are among my favorite. Mostly, though, it is because the stories behind the foods are so engagingly told.Five stars out of five. I’d rate it 10 if I could.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. With your help, my improvement will help you and me improve book reviews on Amazon. Together, you and I can build a great customer review process that helps everybody. Will you join me? It is people such as you who have helped me improve over the years. I'm still learning, and I have a great deal yet to learn. With your help, I'll improve every day.One request: Be respectful and courteous in your comments and emails to me. I will do likewise with you.Thank you so much for indicating if this review helped you, or for your comment.

I just returned from a trip to China, and saw this cookbook pop up in kindle deals and just had to buy it. (Can Amazon read my mind?) Anyways, I haven't cooked anything yet but from reading through the recipes it seems I can find any of this at my local grocery store and I plan on cooking up a storm this weekend. The pictures are great and I can just smell the food coming off the page! Thanks for putting together such a fun cookbook.

Based on an Internet review, I recently bought the hard-cover edition of this book as a Christmas present for a friend here. Didn't read it through, because I wanted the book pristine, but I did glance enough of it to think it worthwhile. Then the Kindle edition went on sale for $1.00. Got it and like it a lot. It's a mix of travelogue and cookbook, with enough big pictures to make it worthy of a coffee table.

"Chinese Street Food" is a guidebook to Chinese fast food and a travelogue. The cookbook is thoroughly cross referenced and indexed. Some of the ingredients may be difficult to find ,but the author suggests substitutes. The techniques do require practice. If you enjoy cooking the effort is worth it.

I bought this book because I love Chinese street food. The authors have done a great job of cultivating a fantastic list of recipes and even providing some background and context for the food. Reading the book is like taking a culinary tour through various parts of China. The recipes are also well-written and easy to follow.

I collect recipe books and this is one of my favourites by far. I lived in China for three years and, being a huge fan of the country’s street food, I can say that this book truly delivers and is as authentic as it could ever be. The recipes are well described and easy to follow, and each chapter starts with a very interesting introduction and pictures that take readers on a trip to stalls and hutongs in Beijing to food streets all over China.

This one's hit or miss. There are several devotions that are decent, but it's not consistent. If you're looking for a biblically based devotional for your preschooler, this is *not* it. You'll be skipping parts or altering what the author wrote because she occasionally espouses a works-based view of salvation. In other words, you need to do something for God to respond favorably towards you. This isn't the God of the Bible. If you're looking for a devotional that teaches you that you can save yourself with good works - this is the one for you, but that is not Christianity - it's religion. The one thing that sets Christianity apart from *all* other religions is that Jesus did the ultimate righteous deed of dying on the cross for our sins so that we wouldn't have to "work" for salvation, as Crystal Bowman espouses at times. Ephesians 2:8,9- "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may boast."Cons:-Inconsistent theology throughout devotional-Espouses works-based theology which is unbiblical and unchristian-Encourages the view that you need to be good for God to help you or love you or be happy with you-"The more you read the Bible and pray, the more God will help you." - no God will help you if you call out to Him, period...not if you read your Bible more and pray more.-"But God doesn't want us to worry about riches. Being a good person is more important." -Being a good person is more important? Actually, having a relationship with God is *most* important. Being a good person isn't the goal. Knowing and loving God is the goal. Loving others is a natural outflow of knowing and loving God.Pros:-Nice pictures-Cute, rhyming prayers-Dated so you know where you left off

Great book to read every night with my 4 and 2 year old. Each page has its own story that's easy for kids to understand and then a bible verse is related to the story with a short prayer.

The best book for my 2 girls ages 2.5 and 4.5! It is such a great devotion for small children and explains things so easy with precious stories. All pages less then a page so it’s easy to keep your littles attention! They also use the same characters thru the book making it easier for your kids to follow/understand!

We use this devotional daily with our 3 & 5 year old boys. It's perfect for their ages! Short & sweet life applicable lessons with a bible verse and prayer. The illustrations are cute and colorful! I can see us using this for years to come. Great children's daily devotional!!!

This book is great for starting conversations about God and our walk as Christians. I like how verses accompany the stories. The daily prayers rhymed and are great for kids to repeat. I worry a bit about a few of the messages making God's love almost conditional, but as a parents I feel that's my duty to communicate in a deeper way so it doesn't hold me back from using those days. I'm thankful for this book providing consistency and format to our time with Christ.

I read these devotionals daily with my 3 year old little boy. He is currently very interested in learning about Jesus and reading Bible stories, so of course I want to facilitate this as much as possible! :) We do our pocket calendar time, sing our days of the week/months of the year song, and then do our devotional. These devotions are short and sweet, and the perfect length for the young child. Each story ends with a bible verse and a prayer (usually rhymes in some way). The book uses the same handful of children throughout the book, which I think is a positive attribute for preschoolers. They are able to become familiar with the characters as they read each story. Overall, I definitely recommend this devotional.

I really love this book. I wanted to incorporate devotionals into my day with my daughters (age 2 & 4.5) but I was having a hard time with consistency. They both love this book and they are the ones asking for it, so I don't have to try and remember. We try to do it during meal time, but I'll do it any time they ask. It's also nice to teach them patience. My oldest will want me to read ahead and I get to teach her about looking forward to the day when we get to read whatever story she's looking at. The illustrations are very cute and my 2 year old will sit and look at the pictures for a long time by herself. But most importantly, the devotionals are high quality, point my children to Jesus and teach them of the great love God has for them. There is a bible verse and prayer with each devotional too. We've been using this book for months, and I'm confident we'll get several years of use out of it. I plan to make it one of my go-to gift items for other little kids.

I like this book for a couple of reasons. I like that the topics are age appropriate for a 4 year old. I like that there are specific dates so we know what to read every day. I like that there this a concept introduced and that there is a prayer and verse associated with each. I like that each prayer rhymes. I also like the diversity presented in the children in the book.If you are looking for a daily devotional for your 3 - 6 year old, this is perfect.

Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into the Heart of America, by James Fallows

Review

"James and Deborah Fallows have always moved to where history is being made. . . . They have an excellent sense of where world-shaping events are taking place at any moment—and a fervent commitment to be there to see it happen. . . . In these cities, the Fallows argue, citizen participants are coping with declining industries, creating new civic cultures, assimilating waves of immigration, and collaborating across party-lines to revive everything from arts programs to tech seedbeds."—David Brooks, The New York Times"A tonic of a book about the can-do America unready to succumb to rot."—Roger Cohen, The New York Times"Reminiscent of Charles Kuralt's On The Road with Charles Kuralt, this unique look at the heart of America will bring hope and insight to readers. Highly recommended."—David Miller, Library Journal“I’ve been waiting for this book for years. . . . Buy this book. . . . This country is more united than divided...and this book will prove it.”—Joe Scarborough, co-host of Morning Joe on MSNBC “Knowing the Fallows and their work, I assumed this new co-authored book of theirs would be typically savvy, sensitive, articulate and prescient. What I didn't expect was how a record of experiences of current middle American communities, through their lenses, would be such a page turner! I've guessed for many years that real change in this world would be effected by and within small communities—places where people feel connected and capable of impact on some larger scale. Our Towns is a monumental validation of that hypothesis—with real stories and real people, who are really getting things done. James & Deborah—thanks for your journey, your open and honest observations, and helping to shine light for us at the end of many tunnels.” —David Allen, author of Getting Things Done; the Art of Stress-Free Productivity“Our Towns will become a classic, joining the ranks of American odysseys from De Tocqueville to Dos Passos. The landscape unfurls beneath us; the language of different regions echoes in our ears. Most important, this book is a tonic for what ails us as a nation, a captivating story of energy and renewal across the land.” —Anne-Marie Slaughter, President & CEO, New America“In the tradition of John Steinbeck and Studs Terkel, the Fallows have crisscrossed the country in search of the extraordinary strength and character of ordinary people and places. What they’ve found—in towns we know and others off the beaten path—should give us all great hope for the future.” —California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.“An illuminating trip through ‘parts of the country generally missed by the media spotlight.’ . . . Writing with lively curiosity and open minds, the couple have created textured portraits of 29 American cities, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Eastport, Maine, to Redlands, California. . . . A well-reported, optimistic portrait of America’s future.” —Kirkus Reviews  “An eye-opening, keenly optimistic reminder of the strength of America’s vital center.” —Publishers Weekly

James and Deborah Fallows are journalists, and it's no surprise that Our Towns reads a lot like long form magazine journalism. They took off in their single engine plane and dropped into a couple dozen towns over the course of a few years, to see what "flyover" America is up to. They approached getting to know the towns in what seemed to me like a pretty effective way -- they combined doing things they normally do (find a public pool to do laps, go to the public library, visit a brewpub, walk around town -- with some journalistic activities such as interviewing the mayor, visiting the community college, finding the town "patriot." It's an easy book to read in small chunks, and the overall impression is that America is doing okay at the local level, regardless of the bitter divisions in Washington. Not okay in the sense that everything is rosy, no problems to see here, but okay in the sense that people are tackling their local problems and finding original and effective ways to deal with them. One thing that stands out is that in many of these small towns, immigrants are as much a part of the solution as they are a challenge. A surprisingly optimistic and very American group of stories.

One word: Boring boring boring boring. The least interesting book I've ever read. Whoever said it was like a Christmas letter that never ends, agreed 100% I tried, sincerely I did, but the repetition just would not end, dissecting small towns as if they were entomologists examining ant hills. Self-absorbed authors and somnambulent prose, I had to quit at the 1/3 mark. Any more and I felt I was wasting my life. I kept hoping it would get interesting. It didn't. Don't buy this book; run from it. They got a lot of radio time on the book tour, must have a great agent. A once-great agent. With all the favors he called in to promote this dog, he's certain to have none left. And to top it all off, flying place to place in an aircraft with one of the worst accident records in the history of aviation. And now 100% owned by China. Wok that dog.

This was my kind of book I thoroughly enjoyed Our Town – A 100,000 miles Journey into the Heart of America by James and Deborah Fallows. They covered all those miles with James flying in a small plane which I also enjoy as my husband also was a pilot of a small plane. James plane was high tech and this way they could cover more places plus I enjoyed Deborah’s description of all the different land and scenery they flew over. They wrote this book over several years of covering thirty different communities and some they had visited twice. What made this book so real was they picked communities of all different sizes with many going through upgrade. This meant in many places upgrading the downtown areas that had gone into disrepair because of large malls being built in the suburbs. It was fascinating to me to read about how they organized their communities to work together to bring back business and people. So many of these towns I was very familiar with and lived in many just like the ones in this book. The Fallows were excellent writers and sometimes I could not tell who was doing the writing, it blended in so well. I did figure out then James loved to swim and seemed to find a place to swim in every community while Deborah loved the libraries and her describing them in every community. From the East where they lived in Washington D.C. to the West coast where James grew up as a child they covered every state in between. Amazing to read about how each town worked together to make their community a thriving and interesting place to live.I did enjoy the California small towns as all we usually hear about are the mega places along the west coast. All the action is along the coast but these communities have made a success and a great place to live. I am from middle America so have lived in these communities and through the years as times change these communities have to change as well to be successful. The Fallows in their writing found something positive about each place which makes one proud that you live in America because of people who are free to develop themselves and their towns.I loved the print size of this book but found something troubling as something was not right. I took a while until I figured out that in the type the letter “t” was small about the same size as an “r” so in reading they ran together. All the other tall letters where fine. It was a great book.

You can look up at the night sky and get a good picture of what all those suns looked like millions and millions of years ago. If you visited a city 10, 20 or 30 years ago, your impression of the place might be equally dated. James and Deborah Fallows undertook a "100,000+' mile journey around America for three or four years examining where there might be some positive directions in places that had been hit hard by economic tidal waves, shifting demographics and/or other phenomena that were beyond their control. Despite massive dysfunction in national politics, they have found considerable evidence of growth and optimism, laced with hard work. Some common denominators were a realistic assessment of what went wrong; the energy and creativity in educational institutions, appreciation of quality of life factors, the welcoming and contribution of new immigrants; the focus on getting a few things right with a new direction and majority community participation.Frankly, the book often becomes tedious. The picture of many community leaders is often two dimensional. One can only appreciate so many references to swimming pools and elementary schools. Their affection for small airports and brew pubs may or may not resonate. But the patient. disciplined and contrasting window on places that don't get a lot of positive press coverage is worthwhile. In my prior life, I spent weeks in random places (wherever my company was involved in serious litigation). I nearly always came away with a respect, and sometimes an affection, for places I would rarely have sought out on my own. It's good to know there is still a lot of constructive energy in many small cities and towns in Middle America.

This book is a total HOW TO guide. It is not anything about their past picks. I was hoping for more back story into their past picks and how they got them etc. Instead it's how to pick, what to pick, and advice from other pickers. I wasn't all that thrilled with this book as it just dragged on and on about how to, which if you watch the show you get an idea on how to do it. So if you are a die hard fan wanting to know stories, this isn't your book.

GOOD COMMON SENSE APPROACHES TO BOTH BUYING SELLING COLLECTIBLES AND ANTIQUES

Since I am a fan of the show I really enjoyed it. I bought it for my husband and he thought it was good also. It was interesting to learn more about the people we watch all the time and how they do what they love.

BRILLIANT! Love my boys from Iowa

Made the perfect gift.

a great and informative read

Good read but wish would have been more of a history of the characters. Was confusing sometimes.

ohhhh My gosh i loved it!!!!!!!! I can completely and utterly relate to Shay. She's kind and compassionate but she's insecure and doesn't like the way she looks. She's a bacon lover ( like me ) and she has amazing best friends. This book is skillfully and wonderfully made. I would expect no less from Lola. Her books never disappoint!!!!! The struggles that Shay deals with in this book almost every girl can relate. Every girl is insecure about something!! High school is hard and it only gets harder from their on over all great book! I suggest any girl in high school who loves books to read this!!!!

I saw this book recommended on a list of new reads, so I tried it out. I knew it was a YA Fiction book going in but after reading The Fault In Our Stars, I thought I would give it a try.The prose/poetry style wasn't an issue for me; it makes for a quick read. I do, however, take issue with some of the depth of the characters. While you understand Shay and her issues, Dash and his, there are not enough--for my taste--for the others. For instance, I want to know more about the terminally ill girl, the step mom and even Blake. I need more back story to really care about these guys. That said, if you're a younger/newer reader these issues probably aren't a problem for you. You'll like the heroine and you'll love the story. Things almost like this happen in real life every day. It did to me.Two stars for older readers because of predictability and lack of back story and four stars for younger ones because of the prose/prose style puts it at a solid three stars.

The poetry format may not be for everyone. But let me tell you Shays story is, she had to deal with real life bullying and other issues in her school that hit head on. I love Her and her bestie, the story pulls you In and makes you want to know what happens to her.

This is incredible!!! When I first got it I didn’t want to read it but then i started to, I though it was a by ch of poems but it wasn’t that. Its a great story. This book is perfect for my readings on the train. Love the text messages in it. I barely read actual books. But this is amazing

This took me back to high school. I loved reading this style, the poetry is unforgettable. I can't wait to read more from this author.

This story honestly was my least favorite of 2016. First it is written in verse and I had no idea until opening it that was the case. It isn't that I don't like poetic verse, it's that this story was made 10 times more confusing because of it. It's about an overweight girl who is 15 just lost her father a year ago, has a gay friend, and a terminally ill friend, and a step mother she hates. All crammed into poetic verse... It was way to crowded. Shay Summers meets a boy online and finds out he is from her school and they fall in love. My main problem with this book is she had such big issues with her own weight. I understand that because I am an overweight girl myself, I always have been. I thought it would be a story of a girl coming to love who she is on her own but no. It is a story of a boy falling in love with a girl and because a boy loves her then she can love herself. I mean what kind of nonsense is that? I hated the ending. I understood it was suppose to be cute and funny but it just made clear the fact she was fat and she was okay with it because a guy was okay with it. I mean what garbage. It was not the book for me. I honestly wouldn't recommend it to anyone else.

I don't recommend this to anyone. This is the definition of crap. The only way to define this better:YA oh so original slam "poetry".

I don’t read poetry that often so I find it hard to review… Actually, I think the only other poetry book I ever read was The Princess Saves Herself in the One and it was FANTASTIC. But back to the point, I don’t exactly know how, or what even to say in a review for poetry book. So MINI review time!I saw this book at the library and picked it up immediately. I adored the art on the cover and bright, vibrant colors, so I looked on the inside and… it… was… a… POETRY BOOK!I was actually really surprised, I don’t see poetry books that often. I liked how this one sounded (plus cute cover) so I planned on reading it. It was a short, quick read, the nicely done poetry really helped that out anywho, on to the book.-As I’ve already said, I kind of have a hard time reviewing poetry. I DO count this book as a poetry book. Honestly, I’m not sure why people say that having spaces between words isn’t poetry because it is pretty darn poetic if you ask me. The writing Lola St.vil created was so poetic, very descriptive and emotional this book actually made me tear up, and smile, but mostly cry. This book was a roller coaster ride, full of ups and downs. We can’t help but love Shay, we want to root for her. Lola St.vil wrote some amazing poetry, I really want to read more by her!-Again, I don’t read poetry books often, this is the second one I’ve ever read (maybe third?)… Girls like Me told a story using poetry, it was something I’d never seen before. This book had a full plot! This blew me away, and I would really love to see more of this.-The characters in this story, while not very developed (in my opinion), were lovable. I adored Shay and her story, well parts of her story. Kelly was awful towards her…. I loved her relationship with the guy she met online, although I found his true identity to be really predictable, that doesn’t take away from the joy (or sadness (at times)) I felt at reading their exchanges.-My biggest complaint was that the story wasn’t very original. I think we’ve seen stories like this before… but it was still good. I’m not going to let that take away from the power of this book, because it was powerful. The main character, Shay, is overweight, she doesn’t have many friends and endures bullying. Her father died, so she feels alone… Shay’s story was easy to relate to, and hard to read at times. Her feelings poured into the poems making me emotional at times. We could connect with her.-Sometimes the poetry switched POV without explanation. Sometimes this threw me off, but it didn’t bother me that much. I sort of wish there was more explanation before the point of view switched but again, it wasn’t that abrupt or hard to figure out.-One of my biggest problems with this book was the lack of backstory. I get that this is a poetry book so I sort of understand why it would be hard to add backstory without it becoming too long, but somethings I would have liked more explanation on. What was Kelly’s deal? Why was she such a jerk, just because? Maybe… but I would have liked some reasoning. I DO get that some people are mean for no reason so I acknowledge that…Overall, it was a roller-coaster ride of emotion, a poetry book that told a story. GUYS, while some parts of this I didn’t like (random POV switch) this book was POWERFUL. I highly recommend it if you enjoy poetry! I don’t like poetry that much so maybe I need to stop reading poetry books… BUT I am SUPER glad I read this one because it was pretty good!
