Are you ready for the theory (or theories) of everything? And not just theories, but insights into almost everything under the sun, and innumerable examples and illustrations. My favorite is the section in which Fat Tony debates Socrates, a near demolition of Platonic thought and it's attendant fetish for Top-down thinking.You won't agree with everything in this work, but the open minded will find it highly stimulating, even inspiring--a work of tremendous sweep and power.

One of my three favorite books of the summer.The concept of antifragile is amazing. It will provide the more random areas of your life with a justification that may not exist. Although Taleb builds on earlier books regarding randomness and black swans, the content of this book can easily stand by itself. I should warn you though, if you are like me, I went back and bought several of his earlier books.I read the kindle version and listened the it on Audible too. The only thing I did not like about this was that the Kindle version did not have page numbers in it unlike many current Kindle books. This is not Kindle's fault. I did love the way that the reader in Audible read the references as part of the text. Readers so often overlook footnotes and references.Reading on Kindle was fabulous. The ability to link references and people makes the reading a better experience.Okay, if you are going to read this book please extend the experience. Think YouTube too. Here's an example of what I mean - http://youtu.be/_MYTFWCbDKQ. If you watch this you'll see how much extended value there can be in this kind of activity. Okay, I know what you're thinking, you think you can just go to YouTube and watch. Of course you can. Be the book is better and the book will help you become selective.Two last things:1) successful fragilistas won't like Taleb - but they too should know his messages.2) some of his behavior will appear pompous and arrogant. So what, it is the content and if his personality turns you off during interviews and presentations, read the book. His content to too good to miss.Now, if you care, my two other favorites for this summer were, "A fighting Chance" and "the Goldfinch". I wonder what Mr. Taleb would think of being in this group?

To reveal creeping determinism, or `abstract blindness' I am reminded of the WWII bombers that returned from German bomb runs. The ones that returned were all shot-up and full of holes. The General asked, `what can we do to protect the bombers'? A smart mathematician said put extra armor where there are "no" holes. Where There are No Holes! Of course, Antifragile and the work of the author are about being aware of the unintended consequences that we can not see, or even contemplate.When looked thru the lens of abstract blindness, one realizes that the bombers that did not return were the ones with holes in them that no one could see. This dove tails into the Antifragile's frequent reminder that absence of evidence (of harm), is not the same as evidence of absence -- meaning (in my view) just because there is 30 years of data that says it has never happened before does not mean it will not happen. This is the turkey's view prior to Thanksgiving Day problem - from Black Swan.As for Seneca's Asymmetry, if you have more to lose than benefit from fate then you are fragile. Seneca's practical counter to being fragile was to go through mental exercises to write off possessions, so when losses occurred he would not feel the sting. And also use a barbell approach meaning keep the extremes on the ends and therefore avoidance is in the middle. This fine book also has a considerable amount of discussions on health matters that range from Hormesis (think vaccines), medications that we don't need, your private doctor may be your worst enemy, non-linear activity (anti-marathon training), and much more.If you consider this the 3rd book in the series of Fooled By Randomness and Black Swan, then the Trilogy Was Worth The Wait. I try not to provide spoilers, so I do not provide a detailed synopsis of the books since I feel that is the author’s job.“Before Vengeance” is another novella, which introduces the backstory to other important characters in the multiple dimensions in Louisa Lo’s “Vengeance Demon” series. Not only does it provide the background on Megan Aequitas’s best friend Serafina, it sets up the action that follows in Book Three, “A Good Vengeance.”Louisa Lo has shown she is a dedicated author in both the “Vengeance Demon” series and her new “A Royal Apocalypse” series. She is intent on placing as much accuracy in her writing as is possible in a fantasy series, with her own exhaustive research and seeking out experts in fields she does not know well. Her writing style is truly magical, with strong characters, superior dialogue, and stories that resonate on multiple levels throughout. Her books are well-written, skillfully edited, and capably proofed; something few writers in today’s independent author, self-published novel, marketplace bother with.“Before Vengeance” is an extremely well-written novella that prepares the reader for the action that follows. Louisa Lo is a truly talented storyteller with a lot of delightful, well-thought-out and interesting stories to tell. I look forward to reading them all. The only true problem of “Before Vengeance” is that it ended too soon since it was not a full novel. Before Vengeance #2 - The author states this is a prequel to Vengeance Be Mine. I read it after VBM and I found it doesn't matter about the order. This is a well written, rather serious introduction to Serafina and her secretly being swapped with another child, and her childhood best friend and love. and his changelings world.Vengeance Be Mine #1 - Funny. A well written, intriguing introduction to a cast of likable, and not, characters with a funny, fast paced and exciting-in-places plot. I love the author's idea of AA, and the fact there's no vulgar language and sex, just plain entertainment.Vengeance Unclaimed #3 - A funny, well written short story that holds the reader's attention. While there's no action, the story is fast paced suspense and humor as Megan and her family take a sudden vacation between a rock and a hard place.A Good Vengeance #4 - Intense! This book makes the previous three look like sleeping pills and they are not! The twisting plot was like riding hurricane Harvey, which I did some in my yard; every which way but loose, this book just grabs you and along you go for a fun, scary, intriguing, suspense filled ride. The characters are getting better with age and experience in this well written story. If you love Butcher and Harris, this humorous book, and the previous three, will keep you entertained.Vengeance Demons Boxed Set - Quick, funny stories. Great sense of humor. There's a blurb before each book to inform the reader about the book's contents; very helpful. This is a set of well written, intriguing, humorous books with a variety of characters and plots that twist and turn keeping the reader immersed in the fast pace action, until the end. The stories move quickly and the author's sense of humor and vengeance ideas are great.

Although Before Vengeance is a prequel story in the Vengeance Demons series, it is not necessary to read it prior to book one. I actually read it after reading the first book, and found I enjoyed it a lot this way – it explained quite a few things I was interested in, giving me an insight into one of the characters I wished to know better.In Vengeance Be Mine, we find out a lot about the supernatural world but focus mainly upon the vengeance demon and trickster elements. With Before Vengeance, we get an insight into another world – the fae, the changelings. Although it’s a very quick read, one you can complete in next to no time at all, this one does give us a real in depth look at the world. We get to see how it functions, we are introduced to some of the big players, and we get answers about Serafina’s past.Honestly, I was so excited to find out more about the female who intrigued me so much in Vengeance Be Mine. This story of her past really does do her justice – so much so, I came to love her even more than I imagined I would. I really cannot wait to start book two in this series, as I know I’ll be getting even more of the characters I came to love in this short story. It really does help solidify Searfina as a character, pulling us into her story and leaving us wanting more (if the truth is to be told, a part of me loves Serafina more than I loved Megan and is more interested in seeing Serafina’s story play out).Without a doubt, this wonderful prequel is very much worth the read if you enjoyed the first book in the series.

For me, this was an eye-opener to some inversions and open sounding guitar chord shapes that are very prevalent in Eva's music.

The most beautiful voice I have ever heard.And when you listen to her live recordings, you will notice that she says "Thank You" after every song. It's nice to hear those words.

Well written transcriptions. arrived as promised.

This is a great collection of Eva's interpretations of jazz and pop standards. The tune choice is nothing special - these songs have been covered by countless artists over the years. However Eva's interpretations of these tunes were what made them fresh and powerful. The vocal line in the book faithfully reproduces Eva's unique blues and gospel phrasing and superb use of building and releasing tension. If you can't learn her style just by listening, this book will point you the rest of the way.

I love her and these are very easy to follow.

Eva Cassidy was a wonderful musician. Her rendition of "Somewhere over the rainbow" is the best I have heard, (You can listen to it on Youtube) This book is great and easy to read.

This book captures the details of Eva's arrangements on both the vocals and accompaniment. Someone took a great deal of time to notate her phrasing and the actual chords she plays. An excellent study of her beautiful style.

I really enjoyed reading this book, but then I've had a similar life abroad as Ken and could relate to a lot of his experiences. Anyone who has been to China or Taiwan will appreciate his anecdotes, which are generally spot on. And if you're interested in living or teaching in this part of Asia, this is also a good resource to let you know what's in store. Ken sheds a lot of light on the inner workings of "cram schools" and how easy/hard it is to get by on an EFL teacher's salary.In fact, what really stood out to me in this book is how honest Ken is in sharing his personal life with the reader. The book includes photographs of people close to him and stories about his ex-wife, siblings, and in-laws that I don't think I would have the guts to divulge in my own writing. The teaching chapters are fun and useful, but it's the stuff about dating, raising a family, and dealing with his Taiwanese parents-in-law that make this a truly unique read.One thing you should be aware of, though, is that the book is a direct copy of the author's (now closed) blog. I'm not all that bothered if a blogger wants to monetize what they wrote online, but Ken keeps referring to the chapters here as "blog posts" and at one point even asks you to leave a comment at the end of the article. Um... seriously? These kind of moments broke the flow. I would have liked to see a little more editing take place before the book was published. Likewise, An American Teacher is full of grammatical typos that are harder to forgive coming from an English teacher.So I gotta knock off a star for the presentation, but don't let that deter you. This is definitely a good story and is one of the better "teacher abroad" memoirs I've read.

It starts out like the usual teaching-English-in-Asia story, but keep reading! This guy has an interesting family background and it is interwoven with his experiences in Taiwan. Then he meets and falls in love with a Chinese woman with her own strange family and the plot thickens. They marry and have two children before deciding to relocate to the U.S. It doesn't sound like much, but I got this book for free and was so caught up in the story that I actually PAID for the second installment. That's how good it is. The second book was as good as the first. He now writes fiction and I wish him the best of luck with that, but I hope he will continue to write about his family. I'll buy!

I read this book as I'm preparing to possibly move to Taiwan. There are certainly a lot of interesting thoughts and I did learn some tidbits about Taiwanese culture from the book. The huge problem for me was that as I read through the book, I couldn't help but feel that the author was unlikeable in many ways (always putting the blame on everyone else but himself) and many times really quite a jerk. Reading the book from his point of view really killed it for me... but maybe I will feel differently once I get there. Who knows.

I really enjoyed this book and the author's advice and stories about teaching in Taiwan. The author is very open and honest, detailing highly personal events. In fact, I have to say that I became more invested in the author's personal life within the book than the teaching overseas aspect. I was so enthralled with the author's tale I purchased the sequel to this book before I even finished the first!

I just read this book this week. The author covers his move to Taiwan from the United States. He covers a number of interesting things about cultural issues he ran into, teaching there, meeting his wife, and other things. It is an interesting read. He writes in an easy going manner, as though in animated conversation. I enjoyed his style. Looking forward to reading more by this author.

I've thought about teaching English in Asia myself, so I was very interested in reading this memoir. I found plenty to like about the story-telling, and a lot to like about the observations and personality of the teacher. I also found some times I'd get frustrated and a little ticked off with the author too - like why did it seem that he didn't work hard to learn Mandarin when he was living so many years in Taiwan? But that's good too - the author did such a nice job of presenting his experiences that I felt like I got to know him, both good and bad points, like anyone you get to get to know as a friend.I'd recommend this book, not just to someone considering teaching English as a foreign language, but to anyone interested in ordinary life in a different country. One criticism: I wish the author had talked a bit more about his classes and students. You'd think they were a big part of his life as a teacher, but there was a lot more about his grumpy future father-in-law than anyone in his classes.

Down to earth and personable. Always like reading about other people's adventure. I wish him and his family good luck.

Although I don't think the author was ill-intentioned I found many sections of this book to be borderline racist against Taiwanese people. Often negative general statements were made about Taiwanese people that weren't justified.Also, I found the structure of this book to be extremely jumbled. At one point he may be talking about getting married to a Taiwanese woman, and the next chapter is his 3rd day in Taiwan. There seemed to be no coherent narrative arc and the chapters weren't insightful.I do not recommend reading this book.

As she looks back at her partner she see's him pull his toggle in the wrong direction, which sends him into the bowels of the fire, where he is killed.The following summer, as the wildfire season begins, there is trouble between the female partner of the jumper that was killed and his dating fling, and her baby.There are several incidents where the smoke jumpers are placed in dangerous situations in and around the base camp. And then a fire is reported in a forest close to base and a murder has occurred.The story continues until the equipment used for fighting fires is tampered with and they are put in danger in a fire.The smoke jumpers continue fighting wildfires with a twist on the final fire.This author again demonstrates her ability to learn the correct language and procedures for fighting wildfires and she completes a love story between firefighting incidents and keeps the readers attention on the characters as they go through this different summer. She also interposesa secondary love story and connects the events so that the reader is rewarded with an exciting story line and is able to follow through the entire book without loosing their place and to remain enthralled with the story line.

Such a refreshing and entertaining reading:1. I've never read a book about smoke jumpers, so I loved getting immersed in their foreign-to-me world.2. The main romance between Rowan & Gull was an absolute delight to read thanks to the lack of clichés. Every now and then I have enjoyed them in romance books, but a couple who communicates their feelings and thoughts will always be a winner for me. No need to use third parties or innecessary denials to stop them from getting their HEA.3. The romance subplot didn't bore me, and it usually does when it's not about the main couple.What stops this from being a perfect reading:The long descriptions about the missions got tiresome. I get being told once or twice about them, but there were many missions, so to read the technical talk over and over and over again was exhausting. (Although thankfully not as much as the one in the Inn BoonsBoro trilogy.)***OVERALLChasing Fire is another Nora Roberts winner. Too bad it isn't part of a series, would've loved to see every one of them getting a HEA like Rowan and Gull.

This book is one of my most favorite Nora Roberts' books.I have the physical book copy of this novel and years and years of reading and re-reading have curled the pages, cracked the spine, warped the cover and yet the story still sucks me in every time.I am in process of replacing the majority of my physical books with e-books (I sure wish they'd give us credit or something so you don't have to buy the same book twice at full price, grrr)Anyways one of the first books to be replaced with an e version is this one, Dance Upon the Air.As part of a trilogy it is a beautiful first part...but in truth more often than not I read it as a stand alone.It's not that the plot is so complicated or intense or anything...it's just that what Nora does best, she does in this book. She writes a world that you can drink in lie water. A few pages in you see the world, not the words.I can't tell you how many times I stepped off the ferry and wandered the high street with the main character.There have been times I'd leave this book (the physical copy) in a convenient place and just pop it open and read and re-read my favorite scenes.The description of the cafe and all the baked goods and the kitchen....just perfect. There's something about the way Nora writes, when she's "on" she is soooo on. The world is larger and richer than the few words on the page.Considering how she likes to weave a little magic in to a lot of her books, this one included, perhaps these novels where she's "on" are her own form of magic, the few simple words together on the page creating something together much grander than it really ought to be...Anyways, this book is my go to feel good story.The drama is light, not too intense.I don't mind intense but when life gets hectic or crazy or down right crappy it's nice to pick up a story that you can slide in to on any page and visit that world.I am from the East Coast myself originally so perhaps the descriptions of the little village on an island, the trees and water and rocks and salty air just strike a particular chord with me.I've said before, Nora could write an entire book or books on the day to day mundane goings on in the little cafe book shop and I'd read it.Sometimes the things she writes about, the most simple are the most effective...As I said it's part of a trilogy so you sort of have to read all 3 to feel complete.But this is my favorite of the 3. I'll attach photos of the physical copy so you can see how well loved it is.Not all of Nora's books are hits for me...in recent years some of them are almost misses. I remarked in another review that I wasn't sure if it was her or me who has changed.Thus far this story hasn't changed for me, it's familiar and comforting like your favorite blanket :)I didn't and won't go into plot details, if you like small island life, books and cafe offerings. A bit of mystery a lot of magic and a sweet touch of romance (actual romance!) then you'll like this.I am thrilled to have the e-book version finally. There is something supremely comforting at knowing I have a ton of Nora stories in one little device that I can carry every where. :)Oh and one other thought while it's on my mind. I know firt hand how slightly painful it can be to part with physical books. But nostalgia and cost of e-books etc aside, I can say from experience that the physical book is not what you love. It's the story. And a good story, like this one, sucks you in. You'll forget within moments WHAT you're reading on, or even what you're reading. A good story is alive and not bound to paper.I started reading my new ebook version of Dance Upon the Air and on my tablet and was succcccked right in, as always. :)
