This is a really superb book that gives a basic structure that the new TV screenwriter can use to generate an good quality script. TV drama spec scripts have specific structure and format requirements that are not obvious to the new writer. Is this the ONLY way to write a salable drama? Of course not--and Dan Calvisi says that up front. But it is a terrific format that lets writers focus on telling their stories and generating acceptably formatted and structured scripts. Once you learn the trade, and know the rules, you'll be able to bend this structure if you want--as long as you're doing so in service to the story itself and not to break them just to break them. Highest recommendation.

As a novice in this genre, Calvisti's book was exactly what I had been looking for. My writing over the past few decades has been exclusively non-fiction, so the gnawing question for me in tackling a TV pilot project was: how do I structure the fictional tale that has been stewing in my imagination since the 1980's?I had not found a clear, usable answer until now. "Story Maps" solved my problem and iIt did so using as examples work with which I was already quite familiar, "Breaking Bad", "Mad Men", "TWD" etc. (The only two pilot examples I had to seek out for a first look were "Scandal" and "Mr Robot").Using his methods I was able to quickly structure the existing elements of my story into a framework I am not fleshing out with dialogue, etc. and I did so within just a few hours after first opening his book.I concur with many of the other points being made here by other 5-star reviewers, so I won't repeat those. "Story Maps" is a concise, inexpensive, highly effective solution to a significant challenge. Calvisi delivers exactly what he promises.

Finally a book that's not just padded with experiences in the trenches and all that irrelevant nonsense. Here you get what it says on the cover- a roadmap. And it works. I'm pitching tv at the moment and with no tv experience but tonnes of commercials, shorts and the like I just needed the recipe. Nothing more. So this feels like a Save the Cat recipe but love it or hate it, that recipe works. Same here. Out of the five or six books I bought to cram for this pitch, this one is the best.

As part of a recent research project on predicting Nielsen ratings, I had to read up on the art and craft of writing for television, particularly writingfor 1-hour dramatic series.The first titles that I read were those by William Rabkin.. After that, Kindle's recommendation algorithm kicked in and suggested one book after another--about a dozen in all. I came across "Story Maps" about midway through the lot.With no disrespect intended to any of the other authors, "Story Maps" is, by far, the best of the bunch. Before I explain why, let me give a few thoughts on this genre of books as a whole.First, it is my very distinct impression that these titles are intended for the aspiring and enthusiastic amateur writer--perhaps recent film school grads and/or writers in other genres, e.g. short stories, film, comedy, or journalism who are looking to break into TV writing. Put another way, such books are probably NOT written for people already working as writers for dramatic series--the assumption being that these folks already (should/do) know most of what is contained in such books.With that having been said, a somewhat a philosophical/pedagogical question arises: what kind of book on the subject of writing 1-hour TV dramas would best serve the aforementioned enthusiastic amateurs? Based on my many years of teaching graduate and undergraduate students--albeit in very different topics--one important criteria is brevity.I say this because of one well-known drawback of learning from experts: they have so much too say and often want to teach all that they know. Dan's book doesn't fall preyto this problem. I didn't do a page count but I'm pretty sure that it's the shortest of all books that I read on the topic. And to be clear: it's brief because it's focused on the essentials--the structure of the 1-hour pilot, just like it says in the subtitle.A second all-too-common problem of learning from experts is that they rely too much on war stories and colorful anecdotes. It's easy to understand why: war stories--especially those told by professional story tellers--are fun to listen to. And they are no doubt instructive. But they are no substitute for spelling out the conceptual vocabulary of the field and the analytical framework needed to apply the concepts to realistic, instructive examples. And it is here that Story Maps really, really shines. (Would it be too redundant if I said "really" one more time?)As the title suggests, the books give a a concise description of what the structure of a 1-hour Drama is. That discussion begins in earnest about 35-40% of the way through the book. Leading up to that, a number of important distinctions and definitions are provided--what the core formats are (comedy, dramedy, drama, etc.), the differentkinds of pilot episodes (e.g. premise vs. 3rd episode), and the meaning/ importance of setting, theme, crisis, teaser, arcs, A/B/C stories, etc.All of the definitions are supported by examples from highly popular and successful shows in very different genres, all created by writers at the top of their respective games. But the listing and defining of the key terms is only the set-up for the real important contribution of this book--the beat sheet that links the terms together and shows how they unfold in a sequence of 4-6 acts over 54-60 pages.In short, the beat sheet takes the reader step-by-step, from teaser/act one through the finale, showing how the many parts combine to make a "engine" that drives the story forward. Each of several shows is analyzed and used as an example in each section of the beat sheet. This is smart teaching. It allows one to see how the same elements combined in different stories but all to the same effect--a compelling pilot that launched a popular and highly acclaimed series.It's hard for me to overstate just how well-organized and useful this part of the book is. If you're like me, you'll need to read and study the beat sheet, and practice diligently at the examples. This book was detailed, concise, easily understandable, and what I expected. Having read and understood many books on writing feature films, I decided to also learn writing for TV. This book translated well. Calvisi maps out enough of the top shows on today so as to be sure that you've seen at least one of them, if not all. Most importantly, after having detailed what defined the parts of a story, Calvisi details what happens beat-for-beat, and with page numbers. If you're like me and study multiple books of the same, which makes for good research, this is a great addition to the pile.

For anyone that wants to get a clearer vision into writing their next drama, this book may just be what you need. I'm a novice but it has helped me have to foresight to put together a well balanced script for a pilot I always wanted to write. The examples and story maps given helped me be able to better analyze, which in turn made me enjoy more so, some of my favorite programs.

This book is a phenomenal resource to help the budding TV writer establish a framework and process for not only their current project but all future projects. In business terms, think of it as akin to a Due Diligence framework. It's a checklist of all the things you need to think about and do to maximize the potential commercialization of your story. It's that simple and that comprehensive. The magic of the book is that it weeds out all the unnecessary mumbo-jumbo in most how-to writing books and focuses squarely on "process". It's simply wonderful.

A nice companion book to others, such as "The Japanese Bath", by Bruce Smith. This Dover edition is a reprint of a book written in the 1880's, and so giving a truly authentic representation of the styles of old Japan, uninfluenced by Western concepts. To compare the descriptions and sketches of this book with modern books on the subject is very educational,at the least. There is also a very good glossary of Japanese terms/words in the back; such translations of Japanese words are not often found in most books on Japanese architecture, and are very helpful for those wishing to have a good understanding of the ideas represented in traditional Japanese residential architecture. Very good reading, and wonderful sketches!

Five stars for the content, 3 stars for the poor quality of the scanned pages in my copy, sonsplit the difference for a 4 star score. I'm a fast reader, and I actually have to go in with a fine tip pen and write in the words so I can read faster than a snail's pace. Its really frustrating, and it has been mentioned, so I was expecting it to some extent. I'm hoping a mid-range review will encourage someone to make better scans/copies in the future. I'd be willing to pay a little more for a more readable book.All that being said, there's a lot of info in here...maybe a bit dry for some, but the architect/interior designer in me loved the first hand accounting and the sketches.

If you are interested in the subject, this is an invaluable resource. A bonus is that the introduction reveals that the beautiful and sustaining-of-culture-and-value Japanese Cultural Treasures designations actually arose because 3 American (USA) professors saw too much of real value disappearing from Japan. They worked together with Japanese government officials with the result that Japan created their Cultural Treasures and went on to designate people, food, textiles, ceramics, buildings and land (and more) as Cultural Treasures, thus preserving one of the finest cultures in the world, while giving people who create and care about culture a reason to keep on doing so.If only the 3 professors had also worked with Americans with the same success.

An evocation of the simplicity of the domestic buildings, and the immediacy of nature in the Pacific islands dwellings, with scornful commentary on the design of the house of the western world. All very relevant as we, including east Asia, must learn to live so much more simply in a world of scarcity. and written by a western man of his time who obviously loves the Japan before the Meiji revolution transformed Japan.

"Japanese Homes and Their Surroundings" is a great book. If you've any interest in traditional Japanese architecture, get this book. Edward Morse was an American who went to Japan in 1877 to study brachiopods. He ended up recording a vanishing way of life instead. He tells you how Japanese homes were built and why they were built that way. Not much escapes his eye. In serviceable prose and clear drawings, he tells us about carpenters and their tools, houses, furnishings, privies, fences and gateways, water supplies and gardens. Most of it he compares favorably to American and European counterparts.Best of all, it's a Dover book and cheap.

If you want to understand Frank Lloyd Wright, you have to get this.

This book captures a period of timewhen the Japanese house still had its unique cultural style and hadn't been excessively influenced by american or european style architecture. The book is clearly written and there are many detailed drawings which illustrate the text's descriptions. It is an interesting book both for its architectural detail as well as for its historical perspective.

I recently purchased this book because my daughter is a junior in high school and we wanted to have a better understanding of the financial aid process. I felt the book was very informative and easy to understand. I liked how the chapters started with real life personal stories about different families the author has worked with. The book also provided information on searching for scholarships and detailed the different types of loans available. I would recommend this book to anyone who has children in high school.

This is a must-have for any parent! Easy to read and understand. I especially appreciate that Jodi calls out important items throughout the book: 'Good to Know" - tips most of us don't know, "Let's Talk" - talking points to help with important conversations with your child, and "The Bottom Line" - key points of every chapter. Well done!

I had seen the trailer for the movie and thought it was very interesting. Then I found the book and ordered it. It arrived earlier than expected and I read it in one day. It is very interesting and really makes you think about your life and how you are living it. I really liked the questions it had. Still pondering some of them to get an answer for myself. Recommended it to other people.

I watched the movie, but missed parts here and there from contemplating some of the juicy questions we all deal with, questions we all wonder about from time to time. I got the kindle edition of this book so I could catch up on the bits I missed. Sooo glad I did! This was a wonderful movie, and thus a wonderful book, since it follows exactly along with the movie, and actually a little deeper than the movie since you get to understand what was going on inside the characters' heads. Would definitely recommend.

I love it when God, Jesus, be personaly enters the human experience. The author does a magnificent job of doing this. It makes want to have the same kind of encounter with my Lord. Great read! Great experience!

This book is written more like a screen play. I read this book very quickly as it was very good.

I very much enjoyed the book. I would have gave it 5 stars if the character was more in-depth with his interview with God. Yet, my eyes became more open to why we are all here. Why ask God for a miracle? We are His miracle.

I would recommend this book to anyone from middle school up.Life is always a go, here you start thinking of just how your relationship with God is.

Please remember to check your child's computer access. This was a very complete book and I agree with other reviewers that it is a good source of information... however my child google terms shortly after reading this book, and I did not realize that my safety settings do not block google images. :( Not too much harm done (I think!), but thought I should warn other parents... I explained to my child that computers save browsing history so people can see what others have searched/looked at, that there is inappropriate and harmful content online, that computers can get viruses or other issues when inappropriate links are opened, etc. But first I did freak out (while trying not to show it), so I hope this helps other parents! Also, if anyone has comments on this for how to handle, I would appreciate any suggestions (can you reply to a review? hmmm), thanks!

You need to decide your comfort levels about sex and what you feel is appropriate for your children.I found this book to be very informative and written at a level for preadolescent kids to be able to easily understand. It's laid out with illustrations and small comics in a way to help keep their attention. It does show naked bodies, genitalia , people having intercourse, and so forth. It covers a variety of topics that are important in today's world such as no means no, how to stay safe online, be careful what you text and email, and of course, safe sex practices.

I am amazed at how much I enjoyed this book. It's a great tasteful presentation of the human body with lots of scientific information on how babies are made all the way through childbirth. Surprisingly, it didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. It has short easy to read paragraphs, comic strips, and lots of diagrams. To me, it seems most age appropriate for ages 10-12, though every family/situation is different.*Let's be honest, what you really want to know about this book: how it defines sex!! So here it is: "When a woman and a man want to make a baby, they hug, and cuddle and kiss and feel very loving, and get very close to each other - so close that the man's penis goes inside the woman's vagina. When this happens, it is called "sexual intercourse."" No technical diagrams, just a picture of a man and women in bed kissing under a blanket with hearts in the air. It also very tastefully covers homosexuality in terms of love, and briefly touches on masturbation: "touching or rubbing the private parts of your own body because it feels good is called masturbation...every family has its own thoughts and feelings about masturbation. Some people and some religions think it's wrong to masturbate... most doctors agree that masturbation is perfectly healthy and normal - and cannot hurt your body."Hope this helps you decide if this is the right book for you!

So, for other moms/dads out there needing to have "the talk" with their child, I highly recommend this book as a guide. I'm a nurse, so i can talk alllll about anatomy and processes, but i wanted something with pictures i could use to facilitate that would be better than what i could draw and not so real that she'd be grossed out. I bought this book over a year ago waiting for the moment I'd need it. Well, today, it was finally time to address some of my 9yr old daughter's questions. What i like about this book is that it's worded so well that a child could potentially read it on their own, although i recommend reading together. We read through the first half together, saving the growth of a baby in utero for another time. I would summarize/ elaborate sometimes and answer any questions that came up, but to honest, this pretty much answered her questions. Plus, some of it is written in "comic book" style, which she loves reading and kept her attention. It even has a chapter on good touch, bad touch. We did read through the parts that discussed homosexuality and masturbation. I feel like it's important for her to understand. I also used those parts as a way to discuss how others may feel about those topics. It is a lot of information and I am sure she isn't going to remember it all, but I told her where I would keep it if she ever wants to refer back to it. Great tool!
