We like Answers in Genesis and even support it, but we are disappointed in this book. It is basically an advertisement for Answers in Genesis - to do things their way - meaning using their materials. The book says the same things over and over about using Genesis to witness. We don't disagree that if people don't understand the fall and the need for salvation from sin that we would explain that. But this book goes too far, saying "sadly" many people simply present the cross and resurrection. Wow! That makes it sound as if the gospel alone cannot save. Christians do need to be educated enough to recognize whether or not a person understands the various points within the gospel. But the gospel is the power of God unto salvation and when a person is told they are a sinner and that the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the only thing that will save them from hell, many people know exactly what that means. The Holy Spirit ministers that truth to their heart and they can be saved. Ironically not only does this book not give any practical help to do a better job of witnessing but it doesn't even have the gospel in it!! If it is supposed to be a reset then where is the new information or strategy to help us? And where on earth is the gospel??!! Don't you think if you're advising people on how to witness, explaining the gospel accurately would be the most important thing, not just going on about Genesis?? If we are assuming that most people who hear the gospel don't understand it, why is AIG assuming that the people who read this book understand what it is?? That is a huge hole in their strategy. Well I can tell you where the Gospel is. It is in 1st Corinthians 15 1-4. Answers in Genesis should be ashamed for charging people $15 for an advertisement / rehash of the things they say every time they speak and in everything they write. If they are wondering why after all these decades of ministering, the church is still losing people, it is because this ministry and most others do not present a proper gospel. If you want something that actually helps you witness, go get "By Which We Are Saved." I just read it a few months ago and that book is practical and helpful. I just can't believe that Answers in Genesis has the nerve to sell a book that does nothing more then give you a hundred pages of filler in order to say the same thing they always say. I really feel ripped off.
It is really ironic that Ken Ham’s young-earth creationism book begins with a “Note from the Author†about Billy Graham (pp. 9-10) and ends with “And yes, this means that the Church must start teaching some aspects of geology, biology, anthropology, etc. in its sermons, Bible classes, youth groups, Sunday schools, and other church programs. Christians need the “big picture†of history, so that they and future generations of believers have the right foundation to correctly understand the universe and life.†(p. 124)Billy Graham had a very sensible view of biblical interpretation: “"I don't think that there's any conflict at all between science today and the Scriptures. I think that we have misinterpreted the Scriptures many times and we've tried to make the Scriptures say things they weren't meant to say, I think that we have made a mistake by thinking the Bible is a scientific book. The Bible is not a book of science. The Bible is a book of Redemption, and of course I accept the Creation story. I believe that God did create the universe. I believe that God created man, and whether it came by an evolutionary process and at a certain point He took this person or being and made him a living soul or not, does not change the fact that God did create man. ... whichever way God did it makes no difference as to what man is and man's relationship to God." [David Frost and Fred Bauer, “Billy Graham: Personal Thoughts of a Public Man†(1997), p. 72-74] Ken Ham would do well to listen to Billy Graham.The last two sentences in Ken Ham's book (quoted in the first paragraph) are very true, just not for the reason Ken Ham thinks. The Church should start teaching some aspects of actual science, not young-earth creationist “science†that is twisted to fit one particular interpretation of Genesis 1-11.Ken Ham correctly points out that “questions about creation, evolution, age of earth, dinosaurs, Noah’s Ark, the Flood, Garden of Eden, etc., were a major cause of why so many young were leaving the Church by the time they reached collage age.†(p. 71) He claims that this “presents a huge dilemma for the Church†(p. 74), but this is only a dilemma if the Church is trying to force a Young Earth Creationism interpretation of Genesis 1-11. There are plenty of Christian resources out there that demonstrate the compatibility of science and Christianity. Theologians still have some work to do, but that will come with time.Ken Ham’s specific arguments have been refuted countless times. The sad truth is that Ken Ham is well aware of this. In his book “Six Days: The Age of the Earth and the Decline of the Church†(2013), he devoted a total of over 35 pages mentioning and/or discussing the writings of 24 prominent Christian scientists, theologians, pastors and laymen who accept the compatibility of science and the Bible, but Ken Ham claimed that all of them are wrong and he is right.I will not try to address his specific arguments or the reasonable Christian responses here because then my review would be longer than Ken Ham’s book. For anyone interested, I would suggest starting with any of the following books by Christian authors:• "Paradigms on Pilgrimage: Creationism, Paleontology, and Biblical Interpretation," by Stephen J. Godfrey (a PhD paleontologist) and Christopher R. Smith (a PhD Baptist minister).• “Evolving Certainties: Resolving Conflict at the Intersection of Faith and Science†by Terry Defoe• “In the Beginning... We Misunderstood: Interpreting Genesis 1 in Its Original Context†by Johnny V. Miller & John M. Soden• “Evolution: Scripture and Nature Say Yes!†by Denis O. Lamoureux• “I Love Jesus & I Accept Evolution†by Denis O. Lamoureux• "Exploring Faith and Reason: The Reconciliation of Christianity and Biological Evolution" by Bruce Glass• “The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief†by Francis S. Collins• “The Groaning of Creation: God, Evolution, and the Problem of Evil†by Christopher Southgate• “Death Before the Fall: Biblical Literalism and the Problem of Animal Suffering†by Ronald E. OsbornOn the last two pages before the appendices, Ken Ham makes it appear that this book is actually an infomercial for Answers in Genesis resources. (p. 113-4)In Appendix A, Ken Ham’s Genesis-Romans Road inexplicably leaves out the most important parts of the traditional Romans Road (steps 2-5, which are the salvation message). Ken Ham appears to believe that the book of Genesis is more important to salvation than Paul’s letter to the Romans.This book is a reasonably well-written statement of Ken Ham’s position on the interpretation and importance of Genesis 1-11. Unfortunately for him, his young-earth creationism is becoming more untenable every year and is doing a great disservice to Christianity.
I gave this book 3 stars because if you have read any of the AIG material then this book is a retread of the material. If AIG is new to you the this would be a good book. I honestly don't think anything in this book was new material to me, that is something I haven't read from AIG before. I was hoping for more.I was intrigued with "Appendix A" (Genesis-Romans Road), but upon reading it this seems somehow incomplete, as if in it has the sin part but no Lord and Grace part. Everything was "Good", man sin'ed, all sin so then what? With it's title I was expecting an AIG perspective on the 4 Spiritual Laws but it fell short.
Sharing faith is about reaching the people you're speaking to. The word of God has the power to change the hearts and lives. But getting them interested in the truth means meeting them where they're at. The book is a great help and providing a method to relate to those in our present world. I recommend reading it definitely. I also recommend visiting the ark and the Creation Museum to learn much more about present mindset
The comparison of Peter's sermon in Acts 2 and Paul's sermon in Acts 17 helped me understand what has happened in our Western culture and how the church needs to respond to it. When the author shared his perspective of having been educated in public schools in Australia it was a good illustration of how state run schools there and in the US contribute to forming the worldview of the majority of society. The only objection I had to the book was the chapter that blamed one individual for making the US a "Greek" culture. That individual is a politician who was simply parroting the culture around him. It takes more than one person to cause a culture shift.
