When I learned that Anne had written a book about cookies, I could not resist! I spent a couple of days reading Anne's narratives and helpful hints and was excited to bake cookies (my first in a long time...wonder if Anne's American Cake book is to blame!), I revisited my childhood with her Old Fashion Tea Cakes. I followed her recipe exactly and produce tea cakes that looked as appetizing as those in her book. She offers directions for those who wish to ice their tea cakes. On half of mine, I prepared the almond flavored icing. It was simple and a crowd pleaser, and it took me back to my youth in the south. I can't wait to try other recipes!! I just gave a copy of this book to a friend who loves to bake.
I work as a pastry chef and have really enjoyed Anne’s books. They are very easy to use, and would work for a novice baker, certainly. More than the recipes, I love that she has delved into our history. It’s a fun book to read whether you bake or not.
This is a fascinating book to read. The recipes are wonderful, but the stories and history are the key feature. Bringing light to the reasons why the recipes were created.
I first heard of this book on the podcast "Stuff You Missed in History Class" when the author was a guest. I ordered the book as I love history and I love to bake. Each recipe has the story of the cookie's history and other notes. So far I've made 2 of the cookies from the book and they were good! They have cookie recipes from across the country, including one from Hawaii. I highly recommend this book.
After enjoying Anne Byrn's American Cake so much, I was very excited to purchase this book. I was not disappointed. The recipes always turn out well and the history behind the recipes is so delightful to read. At family gatherings, everyone wants to know if I used "one of those books" for the desserts I bring.
Anne Byrn's books (American Cake and American Cookie) are perfect gifts for the baker who also loves history. I gave my mother American Cookie for her birthday and she was incredibly excited!
I love reading this, as well as making the cookies. It’s fun to read a little history about each one. I’ve gotten to where my cookbooks have to have a picture of all recipes and this one does that.
