For over three decades, he says, he's counseled patients both morbidly obese and dangerously thin, helping them confront why they set their minds to fail at weight management. He looks carefully, for instance, at why people overeat in response to problems, or why they surround themselves with unhealthy snacks and people. While it's refreshing to see a diet book geared toward the psychology behind weight gain (instead of one that faddishly recommends a few specific foods to eat and to avoid), McGraw tends to complicate his advice with unnecessary jargon. For example, instead of asserting that dieters should feel free to reward themselves for working out, he offers a treatise on "consequating your exercise behavior" using "contingency management." What everyone else would call "whole foods," McGraw refers dubs "high-response cost foods," and touts this as a revolutionary approach to dieting. The book's title is also slightly misleading, since each of the 7 "keys" includes a multitude of internal steps, some of which require lengthy "self-audits" in order to progress. Readers might have appreciated interviews with McGraw's former clients-he says he had an "80-plus percent success rate" in the eight years he focused on morbidly obese patients-and a little less psychobabble. I got this book on the recommendation of a friend. Didn't realize how old it is. The beginning was ok, some good things about right thinking and behavior modification. But his stuff about food is really outdated and typical of things we've heard for years and most of it has already been disproved as a way to eat healthy and lose weight, such as drink diet drinks instead of regular, and eat low fat and no fat. Like another reviewer said, I wish I had seen the food stuff on the sample book I got, before I bought it , because I never would have. Really nothing new here. No one seems to be able to figure out why we know what to do but just don't do it. If anyone could figure that out, then you'd have an answer to obesity. It's not in this book.

It took me a few years but I did it. It taught me portion control and I didn’t have to count calories. You can follow the menus or pick your own foods using the guidelines it gives for # proteins per day, # starchy vegetables, # fruits, and # fat and dairy. You can have unlimited non-starchy veggies. I bought this copy for my friend to use. I didn’t want to give up mine. Most of the book is food tables with calories and it breaks it down into the high response, low cost foods which are the healthiest, and the low response, high cost foods, like your processed fatty foods so there isn't a whole lot of reading. Once you’ve followed it for a year or two, it becomes easy to know on your own what to eat without even looking at the book. If you start putting on weight then you just go back to the plan for a while to get you on track. You CAN eat this way for the rest of your life. I’ve been doing it for 6 years now.

EVERYONE says that you can lose weight just by eating this differently or try this pill or wear this lap band. Maybe if I exercise long enough I'll get thin! I've been jogging on and off for the past 10 years and my body has remained 15-50 lbs overweight (fluctuates depending on the year! ha!). When I read Dr. Phil, I kept nodding with him because he FINALLY got to the root of my problem!! There's a REASON why I eat the way I do and why exercise doesn't solve anything.Dr. Phil gets to the bottom of the problem. If a person doesn't fix the root of the problem, he/she will continue to reap ROTTEN FRUIT. Dr. Phil helped me see the real problem in this book. Fix the root then you fix the fruit!Of all the ways to lose weight, this is the answer... *THE* ANSWER because it not only will fix your body but it will address the problems one might have that CAUSE the fat body. If you don't ever figure out the problem deep inside the perpetuates the fat, then you'll just stay fat. Fat thinking/fat issues/pain covered up with fat/etc. = fat person. Fix the issues, fix the fat!!Dr. Phil is dead on with this book and I recommend it to EVERY PERSON OUT THERE who struggles with weight. EVERY!!!!

After finishing college, I wanted to lose the pounds that I had stored away while sitting on my butt studying all the time. I had heard a lot of praises for this book, so I went out and picked it up.The thing I liked about this book is that it really gives you a mental edge over your diet. While reading this book, it caused me to reflect on my lifestyle and how a lot of the things I was doing was making me easily gain weight. It teaches you how to eat properly and encourages exercise while setting your life up in a fashion that will allow you to more easily tackle weight loss.I not only liked the mental edge, I do like the fact that this diet was realistic enough to recommend and encourage exercise. Most diets claim that they can help you lose weight without any exercise but Dr. Phil actually is much more down to earth in the reality of that aspect.The only part I disagreed with was the part dealing with WHAT to eat. I'm not a big fan of starchy (ie, surgary) foods and was surprised to find that a quarter of each meal was supposed to be high in starch. I did replace this with another diet (read my other reviews, you'll figure out which one).Between the two, I have lost nearly everything that I wanted to loose and I did it with very little effort. I would highly recommend this book to anybody looking to lose weight.This audio version is abridged and things are left out that you should read. If you like what you hear, make sure you pick up the book and read through that as well. However, listening to Dr. Phil preach and teach these 7 keys to you really helps with the motivation. His voice just makes you want to lose all the weight!!

This was a recommendation.....so I read it to see what Dr. Phil had to say. It really didn't matter who wrote it, it was the perspective I was checking out and it just happens that Dr. Phil, probably because of his "stardom" was the recommended source. As with any group of thoughts that have been written down giving you "keys" to anything.....you have to see which keys work for you. The book has tips, tricks, insight and a touch of therapy written with Dr. Philesque kitsch and presented to a mass audience, not custom tailored for you, it is not a road map to a destination....more of a small buffet from which to pick from....but you have to make sure to at least "try the beets....you don't like beets, but you should still try them anyway.....they may not be all that bad and are good for you." "YOU HAVE A DECISION TO MAKE" - This is the good Doctor's opening line, that is what you should tape to the fridge! Everything after the opening line is part of the "buffet", choose wisely thinking about yourself. My program started with the same message with a different delivery: I said, "well doc, I am working on eating better and trying to do this and that and blah, blah, blah"......To which the good Doctor said, "So doing nothing isn't working!" Ouch. I had a decision to make. Use this as a tool to help tweak things.....not necessarily a guide to follow. - Robert
