I have read countless articles and quite a few books on the subject of the gifts of the Spirit in search of answers. I have never believed the gifts ceased at all and have never heard a sound argument supporting the cessation of the gifts. None. For one thing, I have witnessed and experienced a few gifts myself. Aside from the Bible itself, Jack Deere has amazing books that support the gifts of the Spirit for today and hearing the voice of God. This book is well written. It is very easy to read and hard to put down; it won't take you long to finish it and when you do it will want to read it again. If you have challenges in hearing from God and are unsure about your ability to do so, Jack Deere offers countless, sobering points in this area. You may even not like what you read because you could be put on the spot regarding your personal beliefs and practices. Communicating easily with God is not a given but it can be done. If it is one of your goals in your Christian life to hear God, this is worth reading.I selected one of his many profound statements that I think set the foundation for the content in two of his books. On page 89 he states-- The question is not, “Why don’t we see more miracles and have more supernatural revelation in the church today?†Rather, given the apathy and lack of godliness in the church today the question is, â€Why do we have any supernatural experiences at all in the American church?â€Amen, and amen to that. This book is not for the thin-skinned, in my humble opinion.

Proposes we need to hear God in a variety of ways but mainly through the Bible and that all other ways must be in accordance with the Bible when correctly interpreted and applied. Encourages seeking God above all, including above Biblical knowledge, and being humble. Promotes seeking intimate and selfless friendship with God as our main goal in life. A true love relationship with our Father.

Here's an example:In the New Testament, the government of the local church was given to the elders of that church, not to itinerant prophets, nor to the prophets within that church. There are two groups in the church that continually cause problems for the leadership of the church. One group is the prophetic people. Because they frequently have visions, dreams, and unusual impressions, they may have a tendency to think they know more than the leadership of the church. Some get offended when the leadership doesn’t listen to them. They assume they know better what the Lord wants for the church. The other group that frequently causes difficulty is the intercessors. Intercessors are people whose primary ministry is to pray. They spend long hours in prayer—frequently more than anyone else in the church. Sometimes this makes them feel more spiritual than the leadership, and they resent not having a significant say in the affairs of the church. This book has raised by faith, challenged by the think more deeply about the Spirit and word. The testimony that ended the booked was a picture of God’s mighty at work in and through a believer who simple obey. God watches over his word to perform it, not just what is written in his Holy Book but as spoken through his prophets then and now.
The Lord led me to read this and it spoke to me in so many ways. So often the Word and the powerful demonstration of the Spirit are separated in the church today. God uses Jack to show they can be together in harmony again as it should be.
It's a awesome apologetic of the gifts to sesationalism. Although I have found it more profitable to act on faith rather than be uncertain. I love it when I fail so God can show me how I failed rather than miss an opportunity to obey God. But only when it doesn't affect the lives of others.
