This is a wonderful book. I bought it for my son who is a surgeon, and also an avid surfer. The illustrations are beautiful and the book is very informative in a pictorial way, rather than wordy. I noticed he has it on the table in front of his sofa, easy to pick and look at when he watches TV.I would recommend this book as a gift for any surfer who would enjoy the illustrated history of all the different types of boards.

Watching my father lovingly turn page after page and remark, "Hey, I used to ride with him!" or, "He shaped my first board!" or, "My brother rode one just like this in '68!", and turn with tears in his eyes to remark it was one of the best birthday gifts an old shaper/surfer could get, well, that made the whole purchase pretty much perfect. Don't expect bikinis and two-page spreads of 30'+ reef breaks... the boards (and their shapers/history) are the stars here.

There seems to be a recurring theme that every "surfboard history" book writer follows - that of "personal favorites" instead of a comprehensive history. Surf Craft is beautifully designed with terrific photography, but is a bit baffling. There's a section iof text about Duke Kahanamoku and other Hawaiian riders that "spread" surfing, descriptions of their "plank" boards - but no pictures. Nor any pictures of the boards they regularly rode, but page upon page of variations on the "paipo" and "alaia" theme. And after pages of historical Hawaiian boards it jumps to "single fin" boards - skipping decades of finless and "hot curl" board. Later page after page of "fish", kneeboard, thrusters and odd asymmetrical boards - but no "guns" nor any other type of big wave boards - a huge part of surfboard history. Or "normal" production boards". And ends with 5 pages of chopped-nose "planing hull" boards.So I guess if you want to look at pictures and read about a fe historical boards, some Bob Simmons boards (with many important ones omitted), kneeboards, odd-shaped ones and...more odd shaped ones, this book is for you. On the other hand, if you think the title indicates a fairly comprehensive book about surfboards and the culture of wave riding I'd think again. It's a nice book to have in a surf book collection but seems to me to be too focused on a few...some very obscure...pieces of surfboard history and culture.

Purchased as a gift for my father, who shaped boards in his youth and still rides. He loves it and greatly enjoyed reminiscing :)

This book was a Christmas gift for my 14 yr old grandson. He is an avid and accomplished surfer. He was thrilled to add this to his surfing library. He shares it with his Dad. He also gets ideas for surfboard designs and recognizes the classics when he sees one.

Bought as gift for someone who not only surfs, but just started shaping his own boards. The content of the book is basically a wealth of ideas and history for the reader and was well received by the crew at the surf shop.

With a limited number of boards, you've got to be judicious. There are way too many body boards and knee boards. Why would I want to see these? Most of the novelty shapes are absurd and there are no eggs or modern longboards. There are almost no shortboards. The asymmetrical boards aren't very great. You'd do better to just get a catalog from Icons of Surf and Album Surf.

Not a bad book by any means, fantastic photography, just wasn't what I expected or hoped it would be.
