Learning to speak Korean is probably one of the most difficult life goals for many people, mainly because they have to rely on printed materials and learning how to accurately pronounce something in Korean is virtually impossible – you wonder what all the different pronunciation symbols stand for and there aren’t many resources to check if what you are READING is actually how it’s SAID, and this is exactly what makes this book stand out. Format wise, it is a set of expressions used daily in Korea, in 21 different topics such as at school, at work, at the airport, and the likes. The list is quite exhaustive, starting from very basic to complicated, covering many different scenarios you might actually run into. The good thing about how they are presented is that every expression comes with what they call “grammar guide marks” – they are differently shaped underscores, and they are used to indicate which part of a Korean expression means the same in its English counterpart, making it useful in learning not only how to say it but getting a grip on how Korean grammar is structured. I believe this is a great way to familiarize yourself with Korean grammar system, even if you don’t have any knowledge in Korean prior to this point (actually, the book starts with a brief introductory session on the Korean alphabet, their pronunciation, and grammar structure) . The best part of the book is of course the supplementary audio tracks. You can download from their website or you can just stream them on their home page, depending on your study environment. Each expression is spoken 4 times – twice slow and twice at normal speed. In this way, you can hear how each syllable is pronounced when spoken independently, but also hear how it’s said when spoken together with other syllables, because sometimes pronunciations change as a result of interacting with other syllables. So as the book claims, listen to the audio tracks, repeat (or mimic), and keep repeating, and you would have learned to say Korean expressions. Some tips – don’t try to overshoot and start maybe a few expressions a day, and try to customize the expressions whenever possible, for example when you say “How can I get to Seoul?” just practice more by substituting “Seoul” to “New York” or something of your choice. Just be creative… Practice, practice, and have fun!

Bought this textbook to teach Korean my American husband. Like it so far.

Love that you can see exactly how you pronounce the Hangul. That's what I have struggled with, if you don't know Hangul, then how do you know how to pronounce anything correctly? This, along with "Korean Picture Dictionary" by Tina Cho, which has Hangul pronunciation, makes learning so much easier. I also got the Korean flashcards which are fun.

I highly recommend this book if you really want to learn Korean. Also, the supplementary Korean audio tracks are very useful!

About the Author

Filippo Cappellano is a lieutenant-colonel of the Fanteria Carrista (tank corps) currently serving at the army historical branch (Ufficio Storico Esercito) in Rome. He is the author of several books and essays on the history of weapons, organization and tactics of the Italian army in the 20th century. He frequently collaborates with Italy's defence industries and military history journals.Pier Paolo Battistelli earned his Ph.D. in Military History at the University of Padua. A scholar of German and Italian politics and strategy throughout World War II, he is active in Italy and abroad writing titles and essays on military history subjects. A contributor to the Italian Army Historical Office, he is currently revising his Ph.D. thesis for publication: The War of the Axis: German and Italian Military Partnership in World War Two, 1939-1943.

Italy experimented with armored vehicles even before the First World War. However, it wasn't until the Second World War that the Italian military got serious about fielding of actual armored vehicles, including armored cars. This Osprey New Vanguard Series book explores the conundrum, and the results.The authors appear to have very good background in Italian military history; their expertise is visible in their commentary on Italy's struggle to develop and field a practical armored car, suitable for reconnaissance under combat conditions. The text may be a translation from Italian; the English is sometimes labored but always understandable. A really interesting selection of period and modern photographs and illustrations show the progression to a handful of practical designs which saw actual use. Of note, the fighting in the North African desert seems to have driven the fielding of armored cars and actual fighting units. Also of note, the German Army may have been the principal beneficiary. Well recommended to students of armored warfare.

The Osprey books universally provide a good value for money. This one does not break the trend. We have a text that covers the history of Italian armored cars going all the way back to the 1911 war between Italy and Turkey, a war that I must admit I have only the most tiny knowledge. The photos and drawings will be of interest to modelers as well to those of us with a more general interest in the subject.I I had a wish it would be for more detail of the various machines in actual use. For a short book with a low cost this volume is quite satisfactory.

This is a quick, interesting look at Italian armored cars of both World Wars. illustrations are great and there are many black and white photos. It provides the development and history of each armored vehicle. It would have been nice if the book included a first-person narrative or a battle account of these vehicles in action. Maybe that's too hard to come by?

Great topic, great combination of information, history and diagrams. A cool mini book...

I enjoyed the book but thought it could of had more examples of combat uses of the armored cars.

Pictures were great, wish they had more of them. Some of the text, to me, was boring or not that clear. Still a great buy, tho.

About the Author

Andrea Hairston is a Professor of Theatre and Afro-American Studies at Smith College, as well as the Artistic Director of Chrysalis Theatre. Her first novel, Mindscape, which was short-listed for the Philip K. Dick and James Tiptree Awards, was awarded the Carl Brandon Society's Parallax Award. Her plays have been produced at Yale Rep, Rites and Reason, the Kennedy Center, Stage West, and on Public Radio and Television. Redwood and Wildfire is different than Hairston's first novel, Mindscape, but still manages to retain some of what intrigued me in that book. It's more grounded than her debut, but still draws from fantastic elements. One could almost imagine that Redwood and others like her might be the ancestors of the griots of Mindscape, if one had the inclination. This book stands at the intersection of history and fantasy, bound together by a love story that avoids falling into the trap of too-sappy romance, and I enjoyed the journey.I especially appreciated the attention to "real world" problems facing Black Southern migrants to the North at the turn of the century--The minstrel shows and moving pictures serving both as livelihood and self-mockery, and everything that entailed. Redwood manages, somehow, but Aidan's time playing [to racial stereotypes] on screen nearly destroys him.And, of course, there are other challenges the characters encounter: alcoholism, [sexual assault], culture shock, racism... Ms. Hairston doesn't flinch from any of it.I went back and forth on the rating for this, between 3 and 4 stars. On the one hand, I had some trouble consistently connecting to the characters (especially Aidan, who I felt alternating pity and fury at in the first parts of the book). On the other hand, they are oh-so-very human and fallible, and the character development so believable, that I can't help but applaud Andrea Hairston's skill.{This Review was Originally Posted to Goodreads on 2017.03.16. This book combines touches of fantasy with a gripping tale about racial divides and struggles at a significant time in US history. It moves from a southern swamp to the sprawling city of Chicago, all the while revealing more and more about its intriguing characters. In some ways the author's style reminds me of another favorite novel, The Night Circus.

Although a bit lengthy, this book makes a strong contribution to the world of multicultural speculative fiction. Hairston's intertexuality (you'll encounter sly jokes and references to early 20th century African-American texts) elevates the novel and gives readers the opportunity to ponder an alternative view of history.

I was captivated by the strength and magic of this book in the opening lines where Redwood and her family are fleeing for their lives in the post Civil War racist south. Redwood grows up knowing that the magic in her separates her from other people, but it is a deep spiritual gift passed on to her. She also knows that Aidan Wildfire, a mountain man of Cherokee and Irish descent is one of the few people like her. Each has lived through horrific events but share a bond that enable them to find the courage to fight for their lives and for the lives of the people they love. They travel through time, across the continent to pursue dreams. This is also a fascinating exploration of the evolution of theater and the roles it presented to non-whites at the turn of the 20th century. Theater becomes Redwood's life and she takes it forward in a new vision of truth and expression, away from the minstrel stereotype. Redwood and Wildfire find salvation in this new vision and in each other in spite of the adversities that confront them in their new lives. Andrea Hairston's use of dialog is wonderful. She captures an innocence and hope that lives in all of us who live in a challenging world of wonder and skepticism. I'm looking forward to her next book!

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I first cracked open Redwood and Wildfire. I was ill prepared for this densely woven, free-spirited kind of writing mixing a horrific lynching, a girl who can catch a hurricane in her hand, stories from an irish/seminole drunkard's life, cooning in Chicago vaudeville, and the kindness of a country doctor lending poetry books to white trash and coloreds in rural Georgia.Running through the prose is the pulsing, visceral awareness of body; skin, color, breath, and blood, in all the characters.We join Redwood Phipps as she loses her mother, grows up in the Georgia swamps as a colored hoodoo gal in a town where that makes her feared by all, and dances around half-Irish/half-Seminole Aidan who tries to make his own place in the world through a fog of haint-haunting and alcohol.Both travel to Chicago where they find their own places as entertainers.This is not an easy book to read; it's definitely for adults. You can't sit down and gulp it. The narrative is a bit opaque sometimes, either due to dialect or the author's fancy, I don't know, but even when the story takes us hard places, you can't give up on Redwood or Aidan or any of their hard-living and hard-used friends.You read to pass through the hard times, to shake your fist at the boneyard baron and do a little hoodoo healing on yourself, no matter your own color or background.I felt as if someone had taken The Color Purple and mixed it with some of the sad-tinged wonder of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude as I read Redwood and Aidan's tale.Definitely something you should read, but only if you're emotionally prepared.This Book's Snack Rating: A handful of pistachios for the sometimes-painful shell of race, violence, and discrimination you crack to get to the honey-sweet nut of Aidan and Redwood's magic inside.

Jane McAlevey has been an organizer in the labor and environmental justice movements for the last twenty years. She is a contributing writer at The Nation magazine. Her articles can be found in a variety of progressive journals and magazines. She is currently working on a second book and is a frequent commentator on radio and TV shows. She is a PhD candidate at CUNY Graduate Center and lives in the San Francsico Bay Area.Bob Ostertag is the co-author of Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell) and author of People's Movements, People's Press: The Journalism of Social Justice Movements and Creative Life: Music, Politics, People, and Machines. One of the smartest most articulate writers I've ever read on the topic of working class consciousness and labor organizing. I cannot recommend this book highly enough: for leftists, for workers, for union organizers, for political scientists, for economists with a brain.Beautifully written, cogently argued, deeply felt.

Important stuff. As a former organizer for an International Union I was consistently confronted with many of the dynamics and situations at issue in McAlevey's book - both good and some very, very bad. I deeply appreciate reading such a thoughtful analysis of many themes I have thought of and discussed, now a rank-and-filer fighting for union democracy in a corrupt and unresponsive local union. This book is very necessary.Her experiences are educational for anyone looking to organize for the betterment of working people's lives. If I had had someone like McAlevey to work for, I might still be doing the sometimes very powerful, good work of field organizing. She reminds me why I left and also how much I miss it. I'm revitalized for my constant fight in the shop for democracy and power.Thanks, Jane! Solidarity.

A gripping narrative that advocates a philosophy of political action. Five stars for weaving together narration and philosophy in a compelling way. I see another reviewer staunchly disagrees with the author and has bad things to say about her. I have no idea if his critique is based on fact or if it's sour grapes since he's an SEIU organizer and SEIU gets the brunt of McAlevey's barbs. But personal stuff aside, there's tremendous value in the articulation of the idea of deep organizing or whole person organizing, where the context of organizing goes beyond the workplace and deals with the community and the political environment. If you'd like to see the middle class make a comeback, you shouldn't miss out on an exploration of these ideas. And it's fun to read.

Jane's book was recommended to me by a friend who used to work with her. I found it so compelling that I've since gifted the book to three people. If you're interested in the future of the American labor movement, read this book. Jane's experiences make for interesting reading, but the lessons of her time at SEIU are the crucial element.

Jane McAlevey is bright and knows what she is talking about. Organizing workers is more important today than ever. If you aren't in a union, especially in health care, read this and start organizing.

Jane McAlevey clearly spells out the reasons for unions, the abuses of some union officials, and how to organize and get people involved. In these times of union-bashing, this is a must-read book about organizing the right way and making workers aware of organizing for their own best interest. Corporations are making a fortune and want to keep all the money for themselves, that's why unions were started in the first place. Walmart if a prime example of why we still need unions and why corporations are fighting with every thing they have to quash workers from joining. I'm the proud daughter of a union father who fought for decent wages, medical care for families, and humane working conditions. I'll never be able to thank my Dad enough. My continued support of unions is my way of showing my Dad that I appreciate all of the sacrifices he made for our family. I hope that people remember history and the reason we now have the weekends, 40 your work weeks, and more humane working conditions than in the past.

All the short stories emphasize “short.” Heidi, the third story in the series is only forty pages. Grab a cup of your favorite tea. This story is longer than others in the series. You may need a refill.With the premise that Heidi is going to write a porno film to explain the hierarchy present in the world of finance, a reader might expect that trigger warnings should be triggered right away. How can one write porn fiction without being uber-offensive? (Apologies to the ride-sharing App). In this short story, Miller writes something that is clever, amusing, and informative. Readers will find perspectives on how each layer of financial management is seen by potential clients who also may have unattractive titles such as suckers, marks, and chumps. One reason this short story is longer than others is that about 87% of it is written as a screenplay complete with directions characters must follow. At that point, Heidi’s husband comes home, and she explains to Paul what she is doing and what problems she is having completing the play. Her final character is Private Equity Guy and she doesn’t like where the story is going. Readers should note Paul’s occupation.Heidi writes about Paige, a 23-year-old who meets a Trader, described as the most primitive of men in the financial hierarchy. He has sexual appetites that mirror his primitive tendencies. She goes on to meet the Investment Banker, the Private Wealth Manager, the Hedge Fund Manager, the Stock Analyst, the Quant, the Real Estate Developer, the Venture Capitalist, and finally the Private Equity Guy. Paige meets all these men over a long period of time. By the time she gets to Private Equity Guy she is in her early thirties (probably the same age as author Heidi). Each of these tropes has its own unique form of sexual behavior. I had no idea what a Quant was in the field of finance.Given the topic, it is amazing that this story is written with minimal sexual language. I would say that is quite a trick, but the Pun Police would fine me. This five-star Amazon read is informative and entertaining. There is even a moral lesson that readers may discover at the end. Starting with porn and ending with morality deserves five stars.

I honestly had no idea wtf was going on until I re-read they synopsis. And I didnt even fully understand the what was happening til Heidi's husband comes in the picture and then basically trashes what shes trying to say.Not trashes in a bad way but just shows her the good side of the bad shes trying to show in a sweet honest way. Probably the worst of the series.Maybe not worst hut definitely my leaaaaasssttt liked.

Most of this sort story is taken up with script of a porno set in the world of finance that's every bit as odd as the premise sounds. This style failed to connect with me on any level

This short story in the "Fairer Sex" collection is a story within a story. Heidi is using her finance knowledge to try and write a porn script. Each character acts like his job title. Descriptions are funny when you think about finance job descriptions and characters having those descriptions meet their personalities.

This is such a fun collection of short stories. I didn’t love the style of this one (it’s a movie script) but it’s a fun addition to the series overall.

Best one of The Fairer Sex Collection yet. If you are into Economics and finance you will get a kick out of this one.

Duke is on TV almost as much as Sponge Bob. I've probably missed five games in twenty-five years (including my time at Duke). After reading this book, I've missed all of them. The behind-the-scenes, locker-room perspective on how Coach K motivates players is powerful and moving. His preparation for each game centers less on the opponent and more on singling out one player on his own team to lift that player's game. His simple, direct message gets through."Next Play," "Confidence Breeds Courage," "Collective Responsibility" and other catch-phrases of K's apply not only to basketball but to business and to life.How many coaches after winning the National Championship would bring their team back into the locker room two days later to remind them that the Lessons of the Fist (for what those are you have to read the book) apply not only to basketball but to life? How many, in the same meeting, would goad their players to excel not only on the basketball court but in the classroom and in life?This is a book to treasure.

In Five Point Play, Coach Mike Krzyzewski tries to teach the 2001 Duke basketball team about not only basketball, but life too. By setting examples for the team, Coach shows his players the results of communication, trust, care, responsibility, and pride, the same points that helped them win the national championship. "Coach K" has a crew of talented coaches and players that include Shane Battier, Jason Williams, Carlos Boozer and many more. I like the way that Coach Krzyzewski put this book together, by explaining every pep talk, describing every huddle, and giving the details of every game. Although I wouldn't recommend this book to a North Carolina fan, I hope that every other basketball fan gets a chance to read Five Point Play.

As an avid Duke fan I may be a bit biased, but I felt the book was great with a lot of good insight into the behind the scenes day to day operation of a big time college basketball program. Showing how Coach K relates to each individual in a unique way is interesting.

Anyone that is a Duke fan should read this book. It a great look back on how the team handled issues in their season. Go Duke!!

Book review of "Five-Point Play" "Five-Point Play" by Mike Krzyzewski with Donald T. Phillips is an inspirational story of Dukes journey to the 2001 National Championship. Through the book you will find Coach K's schemes that helped lead the team towards their goals. Also the way he connects his players and his own emotions towards the journey in the book is very entertaining. There are many things I enjoyed about the book, but one thing I liked a lot about it was how often he used personal quotes from himself, other coaches, and players to connect you with there journey. Such quotes like at the end of the book after they have won the championship he says, "I just tried to sing my own song for this year's performance and not worry about things. It made me healthier and helped me coach for the right reasons. I had the most incredible year that I've had with a group of kids. I can't stop smiling." You can always get media and other people's opinions on what happened, but when you get there personal quotes, you can actually see what they went through to reach their goals. Another reason I loved reading the book was discovering Coach K's elaborate plans and schemes to get players to build off each other and off their situations. But his main principle is the "Five-Point Play"; Communication, Trust, Collective Responsibility, Caring, and Pride. He has many other amazing schemes, but to get into detail you would have to read it yourself. Those are just a few reasons why you could get to liking this book. It's a very inspirational journey and you can find tools that Coach K uses for yourself in everyday life. Also you're never going to loose background or information in the story because of all the personal quotes and information. It is a very enjoyable book and I recommend it.

Coach K relives the 2000-2001 championship season. Future NBA players Shane Battier and Mike Dunleavy lead Duke to wins over Maryland and Arizona to win his third national championship. Sorry to be sparse on details, but it's been almost 15 years since I read it.Duke fans, it's just past Coach K's 1000th victory, why not get this now?

Five-Point Play is the perfect companion to the 2000-2001 Basketball Season. I received the book from Amazon two days ago, and managed to read it in just a couple of hours. The book is a blow-by-blow account of how the Blue Devils grew and matured during its championship run. Five-Point Play is written in the same style as the ESPNMAG article that was written from Coach K's perspective.Although I don't think one has to read "Leading with the Heart" to enjoy this book, I do think that one's enjoyment is definitely elevated by doing so. A lot of what Coach K emphasizes in Five-Point Play has distinct echoes from his previous book. Such important lessons as communication, trust, collective responsibility, caring, etc. are big themes that he re-emphasizes to the team. However, the primary difference is that in this book, Coach K follows the season in chronological order, with descriptions of practices and in-game situations. There are also several quotes from the players, coaches and staff that are inserted during these situations that further illuminate the different perspectives on the team. Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the book describe, in great detail, the team's psyche when Carlos suffered his foot injury and the team's subsequent shift in offensive and defensive strategies. In reality, there was a signifcant amount of doubt that the team would be able to be competitive by practically everyone on the team-- including Coach K! Fortunately, the Duke Blue Devils overcame this obstacle (among many others) and surged towards the National Championship.

Really good, a little bit short and the explanations are clear about playing from the back, it's better if after you read or even during you watch any of the Marcelo Bielsa teams plays because you are to be enlightened better this way
