Bork, whom Reagan nominated unsuccessfully to the Supreme Court in 1987, combines here a history of the Court, a theory of how it should operate and a lengthy defense of his judicial record. He claims that virtually all Chief Justices, from those of the New Deal to Earl Warren--with his "unprincipled activism"--and beyond, have attempted to insert a "modern liberal agenda" into their decision-making. He argues that justices should apply the Constitution as its 18th-century ratifiers understood it, and that areas beyond federal powers should be left to the states to decide. Although Bork insists that the Court must apply judicial principles in a neutral, nonpolitical way, he acknowledges that his theory of constitutional praxis would probably favor the conservative policies promoted by Reagan and Bush. The United States Constitution was written late in the eighteenth century when Enlightenment principles were dominant in the West. After more than two centuries, these principles have been supplanted by ideas from other philosophic schools in the thinking of Western elites. In "The Tempting of America," Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork asserts that rule by the Constitution as it was written has been supplanted by elites seeking to get unconstitutional political results they favor by imposing their own values not found in the Constitution through legislating from the bench instead of applying the law as the Founders wrote it.Bork recognizes that judges have tried for centuries to make law instead of apply it but that the problem has worsened in the last century and especially in the postwar era. The author takes the reader through much of the history of the Supreme Court, using both famous and obscure cases to show how the country had reached the norm of judicial activism or judicial tyranny, depending on your point of view, by 1990 when this book was written.Judge Bork explains why using the original understanding of the Constitution is the only valid and proper way to adjudicate, but examines the theories of specific revisionists and points out the problems with those theories. The author also looks at common rationalizations for abandoning original intent and notes the drearily-by-now-familiar penchant of the Left to attack motives instead of positions.The author recalls his 1987 nomination to the Supreme Court, defends his record on the bench on hot-button issues of the day, and tells why the Left strove so hard to take down his nomination. Bork's keen intellect is on display throughout the book, which comes to the depressing conclusion that the runaway judiciary will not be reined in, which we know a generation later has not in fact happened. The Constitution is included as an appendix to this superb book that sheds light on one of the most baneful problems the country has faced for decades and still faces today.

He is a brilliant man who weighs in on this topic in a very informative way.

Robert Bork would have added stature to the Supreme Court that for the most part has so often been found to be lacking. Robert Bork's thoughts that he expressed in his book were clearly the Ideas of America's founding fathers, and also the thoughts of.most Americans until Progressive ideology was introduced into America's class rooms.. America's fes won't like Robert Bork's book but those who who want to understand what has happened to America will love America and what needs to be done to restore this countries greatness will.

This book makes interesting reading. I have to confess up front that I don't agree with much of what Bork stands for in terms of his constitutional methodology. But, having said that it does make for fascinating reading and should be on the "must-read" list for anyone interested in the practice of law.The book gives great insight to the debate between those who take very different views of constitutional interpretation: the originalists v. those who view the Constitution as "alive."Highly recommended reading, especially if you disagree with his interpretive methods!!!

“Nonsense is nonsense however heavily weighted with academic robes.’’ (163)No wonder Bork unpopular!“This results-first, premises-to-follow form of legal “reasoning” is to law what Robert Frost called free verse, ‘tennis with the net down.’ There are no rules, only passions.’’ (263)This an excellent metaphor! ‘Tennis without rules’.“The function of the Justices … is to immerse themselves in the tradition of our society and of kindred societies that have gone before, in history and in the sediment of history which is law, and … in the thought and the vision of the philosophers and the poets. The Justices will then be fit to extract “fundamental presuppositions” from their deepest selves, but in fact from the evolving morality of our tradition.’’ A. M. Bickel. (189)Bork presents this as the best argument of his adversaries. Bork explains why opposed. . .“The interpretation of the Constitution according to the original understanding, then, is the only method that can preserve the Constitution, the separation of powers, and the liberties of the people. Only that approach can lead to what Felix Frankfurter called the - “fulfillment of one of the greatest duties of a judge, the duty not to enlarge his authority. That the Court is not the maker of policy but is concerned solely with questions of ultimate power, is a tenet to which all Justices have subscribed.’’‘Court should not make laws’ is the faith proclaimed. However . . .“But the extent to which they have translated faith into works probably marks the deepest cleavage among the men who have sat on the Supreme Bench.’’ (158)Well . . .making law is so. . .so. . .much more fun!Another fundamental opinion . . .“There are, however, persons who make more radical objections to the idea of seeking the historic meaning of the Constitution. They contend not that we cannot know in detail the Founders’ intentions, but that we cannot even understand the principles they intended, because they lived in an entirely different society.’’ (163)This verbal, textual nihilism ‘we can’t understand anything or anyone - ever - is destructive. Bork explains . . .“The claim is preposterous. Compare it with the treatment we give other writings not of our generation. In a commencement address at Duke University, Ted Koppel spoke to the issue, albeit in a different context:“What Moses brought down from Mt. Sinai were not the Ten Suggestions. They are commandments. Are, not were. The sheer brilliance of the Ten Commandments is that they codify in a handful of words acceptable human behavior, not just for then or now, but for all time. Language evolves. Power shifts from one nation to another. Messages are transmitted with the speed of light. Man erases one frontier after another. And yet we and our behavior and the commandments governing that behavior remain the same.”Who doubts the Ten Commandments reflect human life? Many oppose, even fight them, but people have applied them for thousands of years. (I have read, analyzed, taught them to my grandson from childhood. Understands fine.)“The Commandments were written in another language, given to a people of an entirely different culture, and are almost four thousand years old, and yet the claim is that we can understand them. The constitutional originalist asks only for two hundred years concerning a document written in English and coming out of our culture, however much material conditions may have changed.’’ (163)Yep.“Nor is the argument assisted greatly by the analogy to antitrust. It has been suggested from time to time that antitrust courts should intervene when the economic market is, in Ely’s words, “systematically malfunctioning” or, in other words, displays “market failure.” The difficulty is that, except in cases where avoidable monopoly replaces competition, the concept of market failure usually means no more than that the market is producing results the critic disapproves of on grounds that ultimately turn out to be moral or aesthetic.’’ (196)Really?“The market failure concept has not proved to be very useful in antitrust. When an economist found an industry structure he did not like, he immediately pronounced market failure. General Motors once had about half of the American automobile market, and the literature was rife with market failure analyses by people unwilling to entertain the notion that GM had that share because more customers wanted its cars than other makes. Then the Japanese arrived, and the market’s failure disappeared. It had never been anywhere but in the eye of the beholder to begin with.’’ (196)‘Antitrust in eye of beholder’.Bork devotes many chapters to prominent professors . . .“Harvard is apparently a hotbed of revisionist law professors. In addition to Laurence Tribe, Professor Frank Michelman has long been working on a theory that would make welfare payments a constitutional right that would-be recipients could enforce in court. Professor Richard Parker finds our present democracy in a state of “corruption,” which asserted condition he regards as warrant enough for courts to use the Constitution to remake society. He promises a new constitutional theory that will - “take seriously and work from (while, no doubt, revising) the classical conception of a republic, including its elements of relative equality, mobilization of the citizenry, and civic virtue.”Why does this sound . . .sound familiar? Well . . .“This sounds a bit like a Court-managed version of the French Revolution.’’ (206)That’s it!Also . . .“Harvard law school is also a stronghold of Critical Legal Studies, a nihilistic neo-Marxist movement that views all law as oppressive and political. It is nihilistic because its members typically demand the destruction of current doctrine and hierarchies as illegitimate, but they acknowledge that they have no notion of what is to replace this society. To give the reader some flavor of the mood of these folk, I once attended a lecture by one of its leading Harvard proponents, which he concluded by saying:“The first year of law school is designed to destroy the minds of the students. It does that by asking them to reconcile the irreconcilable and to justify an obviously unjust society.”“Sanford Levinson, of the University of Texas law school, advances an extremely skeptical, indeed nihilistic, theory of “constitutional” interpretation. Levinson says that “The ‘death of constitutionalism’ may be the central event of our time, just as the ‘death of God’ was that of the past century.”Maybe the ‘death of god’ lead to ‘death of law’.“In a major law review article, Levinson explains that “for a Nietzschean reader of constitutions, there is no point in searching for a code that will produce ‘truthful’ or ‘correct’ interpretations; instead, the interpreter, in [philosopher Richard] Rorty’s words, ‘simply beats the text into a shape which will serve his own purpose.’” (216)‘No code, no truth’. Yes, legal, judicial, moral ideas are difficult and obscure. Therefore, be modest and make less law!“Among the reasons, as reported in James Madison’s notes, was the objection raised by Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts that it -“. . . was quite foreign from the nature of the office to make them judges of policy of public measures.” Rufus King, also of Massachusetts, added that judges should “expound the law as it should come before them, free from the bias of having participated in its formation.” Judges who create new constitutional rights are judges of the policy of public measures and are biased by having participated in the policy’s formation.’’ (153)The corrupting acid of power.“What is more remarkable is that so much of the scholarly literature takes the same form. In article after article one reads arguments, offered as though they were devastating refutations, which consist of nothing more than a list of desirable decisions the principles of the historic Constitution could not have produced. The fact that this argument can be taken seriously indicates the decayed state of today’s academy. It is a demonstration that law is being seduced by politics and is thereby losing its integrity as a discipline. If it continues on this course, law will cease to be what Holmes named it, the calling for thinkers, and become merely the province of emoters and sensitives.’’ (261)Bork’s worry that ‘law losing integrity’. Well . . .Conclusion-“The difference between our historically grounded constitutional freedoms and those the theorists, whether of the academy or of the bench, would replace them with is akin to the difference between the American and the French revolutions.’’The lesson of the two revolutions is profound.“The outcome for liberty was much less happy under the regime of the abstract “rights of man” than it has been under the American Constitution. What Burke said of the abstract theorists who produced the calamities of the French Revolution might equally be said of those, judges and professors alike, who would remake our constitution out of moral philosophy: “This sort of people are so taken up with their theories about the rights of man that they have totally forgotten his nature.”“Those who made and endorsed our Constitution knew man’s nature, and it is to their ideas, rather than to the temptations of utopia, that we must ask that our judges adhere.’’ (356)Concludes book with several chapters on his failed confirmation hearings. Revealing.Bork is easy to read. Writing for the general reader, not lawyers or scholars. Greig Beck has hit yet another home run with book two in his Primordia series.....And I for one, am hoping for a THREE!!There were many things to love about this book, but my favorite were the scenes with Ben spending time at the prehistoric ocean....Even though Ben went through someharrowing amd horrifing times, to be sure, there were also several that were tender and endearing ....Ralph the Shark being a standout.....Hey, we all need a buddy sometimes...You can just tell how much time Beck has spent in and around water and his love and awe of it and its creatures...(I had to reread these scenes they were so good!)There's just the right amount of gore, plenty of dino monsters and bone chilling action in this 2nd installment ,as well....A scene involving a Gigantosaurus and a fissure in the earth gave me an anxiety attack.......And did i mention the SNAKES ??? Yikes!!Beck has proven to his readers that he hasnt gotten stuck in the same old, same old thriller genre , that many authors do that write a series.....He writes about monsters and Special Forces (Alex Hunter) , Historical thrillers (Matt Kearns) , Fantasy (Valkaryn) , Megaladon sharks (Fathomless , Abyss ) , and now Dinosaur thrillers (Primordia 1 and 2) ...I've read every one and its hard to pick a favourite , so lets just say its always "The current one"... : )Well done, once again, Greig Beck......5 out of 5 stars!!!

I loved this story, but I have one big issue with it. Emma had ten years to plan for this rescue, but waits until the last minute to figure out how they're even going to get to the plateau once the event has started. Since all electronics fails when close to the event, this is a big issue. She doesn't really start planning until less than two years before the next event. If that were me, I'd start doing my research the minute I returned and go in with much better defenses. She knew what they were up against, even if no one else believed her. Granted, the solution she comes up with the get the plateau is genius, but if she had thought about it ahead of time, it could have been much better equipment. It's not like she didn't have the money behind her to get whatever she needed. That said, this was another great dinosaur adventure. It makes you wish you could go back in time and see them for real, without getting eaten of course. I love the science and history behind all of Beck's books and always enjoy the ride from beginning to end. Will anyone be stupid or fearless enough to go back in another ten years?

I greatly enjoyed both of the Primordia novels. This is NOT Conan Doyle's "The Lost World" revisited. Instead, it is supposed to be about the facts that inspired his novel, a novel based on his lack of understanding of what was actually going on on top of that plateau in South America. It reads almost like a book for the family, so the swearing (very little) and the violence (not overly graphic) sort of took me by surprise. No sex scenes. Plot involves a sort of time travel; nothing mind-bending, but, imaginatively done, nevertheless. Characters aren't too deeply drawn, but they are deep enough for the purposes of stories such as these. Not necessarily for everyone, but, if you enjoy the "Jurassic Park" franchise, or movies like "One Million Years B.C." or "The Land that Time Forgot", then, I heartily recommend this series. One silly scene towards the end of the 2nd book where a Titanoboa kills a Giganotosaurus, which is much bigger than the snake, but, hey, maybe that's the one that we never found in the fossil record, so, who knows. Recommended for Dino lovers everywhere.

It's 10 years later and Primordial is on it's way back. Emma, Ben's old army buddies, Andy and Helen and 2 more are ready to go back in time and find Ben. For Emma it means finding Ben alive and bringing him home. The motley group don't really believe Emma but they will soon realize she didn't lie how bad it was. Follow the group as they dodge prehistoric creatures, a world not easy to survive. They find Ben alive and head home only to find that Andy has disappeared from to follow his dream of living in a world he has only studied through fossils. I can't wait to read the next book. Will Andy survive?

Fantastic adventure romp which should be on the big screen, or HBO or Netflix. How are none of these author's novels not being adapted to film?My only gripes for this story is that Ben could survive for a decade in a dinosaur world and not get seriously injured, or go mad with no human contact. And why his girlfriend waited until the last few months to gather what all she would need to get back and get Ben and everyone back.But it's just fun, action-packed excellent adventure!

Beck is hands down the best horror/thriller sci-fi author this century.Wow! These two books were fantastic. I love reading a book where you feel like you are actually there watching. That is what Grieg Beck does. I read Primordia and was able to go right into Primordia 2. I had a difficult time putting the book down. Now, since finishing it I'm having Primorida withdrawals and can't wait for Primordia 3. We have to find out what Andy is up to in his adventure.

I love this author. She is classy and “old- school.”This book is eloquently written.As a born-again believer in Jesus Christ as my Savior, I was very helped as a young person reading this book before I married my husband. I purchased it again as a help for a series on Purity that I was having with our teen girls from our youth group. There was a little bit I was able to share with them. But mostly this book is for a single person who has committed themselves to staying pure and saving themselves for their future spouse.I think this book would be very hard to understand and laughed at- if the reader didn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.Look up these verses in a KJV Bible to find out how to have a relationship with Jesus:(Then buy the book. 😁)Romans 3:23Ephesians 2:8-9John 3:16Romans 10:13This book has really been a blessing to me!

I wish as a young man I would have known about Elisabeth Elliot. I know I would not have made the common mistakes. Her is so amazing and my daughter loved reading this book. Note that the book will not save you hence you as a parent need to read it and apply it together. Mistakes and bad judgements will happen but there is Grace.

I enjoyed reading Elisabeth's story of her courtship and will purchase her subsequent books to discover what happened to the remainder of their time together in Ecuador. I'd recommend this book to any young unmarried woman to give her an idea of what courtship should be like as opposed to what is considered courtship today.

Elisabeth Elliot and this book are absolutely excellent!!! I love how authentic and practical this book is. It completely change my mindset on dating and even on other aspects of life. Elliot does not make being relatable or funny or politically correct her priorities, but trait but puts forth scripture and her personal experience to develop this incredible guide to what it means to be in a God honoring relationship. I bought so many of these as gifts because they are so good!

Elisabeth Elliot is best known as the wife of martyred missionary Jim Elliot, as chronicled in her book, Through Gates of Splendor (1957). Christians are still awe struck by her unceasing ministry to the native people responsible for his death. While I have not yet read that work, an error I intend to correct, I have had the pleasure of reading her book Passion and Purity (1984).The subtitle "Learning to Bring Your Love Life Under Christ's Control" suggest an emotionless book of prescribed behavior to deal with Christian singleness. Passion and Purity is neither cold nor tactical. The strength of this book is that it is personal. At times it reads like great historical fiction as Mrs. Elliot answers the questions of modern single people by opening up the journals and letters of her youth and sharing her courtship with Jim.The Elliot's courtship was intentional, Christ-centered, painful, beautiful and as humanly possible pure. This is not a how to book, but a why to book. The reality is we all know the mechanics of being pure, the challenge is holding onto our convictions in the face of ill-timed passion. I am grateful for the example of the Elliot's.Elisabeth Elliot as an author proves herself to be wholly inspiring, convicting, and absolutely readable. Unwilling to part from her at this time, I have begun to read another of her many books. Single people and those who love single people should visit with Mrs. Elliot and her great God in this book.

This is a wonderful book for young women and men who want to live a Christian life and keep themselves pure for their future mate.I would recommend this book to young people before they begin dating. This book will help them to realize what they are doing when they sell their purity cheaply without the commitment of marriage.This book deals, very frankly, with the feeling that a young couple can have for each other, but also deals frankly with the idea of keeping oneself for marriage and a life of true purity and passion within the marriage bed. A commitment that is promised and given to only one person, not passion for a one night fling, but passion for life.A beautiful book!

So I read this book going into my sophomore year of college and it is SO GOOD. It gives a wonderful perspective of both singleness and marriage and really teaches men and women how to invite God into their love lives and surrender them to his control! I am a young man in my late teens that is considering courtship and marriage for the first time. This book was so helpful and reassuring to me that I recommend that anyone that is considering any type of relationship with the opposite sex should read. I knew about courtship before reading this book but it really solidified my understanding and gave me a great biblical guideline and example. It has taught me how to act appropriately around young women, given me more patience in finding a future spouse, and has also given me some great tools in the selection of a future spouse. Anyone who seeks to be biblical and and obey Christ's will for us in this very difficult process of finding a spouse should read this book.

I bought this book to have a handy resource for my Blueridge BR-40T Tenor guitar. It has been very handy to help with giving me easy arrangements, chord diagrams, and TAB for a nice assortment of familiar songs.I am an advanced beginner guitarist and started gcea tuned ukulele in March, so the DGBE tuning for my tenor guitar isn’t wholly unfamiliar.That being said having a book has given me a great starting point to be able to play around and become familiar with my instrument as I learn theory from other resources.I highly recommend for the recreational player like myself who wants chords and TaB to be able to quickly start playing!I originally gave 4 stars because there are some typos in the lyrics and a few omitted chord diagrams (the chord is written into the song but not diagramed on the song page with the others), but the value of what I did get in this book out weighs the omissions. Hopefully the editor or author will catch and correct them in a future edition.I would love to see additional books in this style, price point and for this tuning offered!

Love the variety of songs. Yes you can find most of these somewhere online for free but I like having a real music book with the musical notation and chord diagrams. This book has useful tips for chord fingerings for beginners. I think it is great! I probably own over a hundred different music books for three different instruments (piano, guitar and ukulele). I wish it had been available as a spiral bound type, but that is easily remedied with a trip to Kinkos or similar copy store that can rebind the book. I am definitely enjoying playing the old favorites from this book.

I have felt "different" my whole life and have frequently described myself as an alien. I had heard of Asperger's before, but every description of it I heard or read was brief and focused on only a few traits of the condition and cases that were moderate to severe. I was totally unaware of the long list of more subtle traits such as sensory sensitivity, stimming, and that not everyone with AS is totally blind to non-verbal social cues. There is remarkable variability among those with AS, and every individual trait exists on a spectrum or may be expressed in different ways, and some traits may not be present at all. Tony Attwood's book went into far more detail than anything I found online and was based more on his 40 years of experience actually working with and getting to know and understand Aspies than the few bullet points of the DSM. I found his book to be incredibly insightful and an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to understand the condition. I repeatedly saw myself in his descriptions and was shocked and excited to sometimes even see specific words or phrases I had used myself (having trouble with "the system" for example).The Complete Guide to AS helped me immensely in understanding myself, why I am so different, and how I can better succeed in life and have positive relationships. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about the condition and cannot thank Dr. Attwood enough for producing such a book an sharing his expertise. Thank you!

I've read a lot of books since our diagnosis for our son, and this one did the best job. He can write for a parent to understand the syndrome, and most importantly to understand how your kid THINKS. Because they don't think like you do. That doesn't make them bad, or wrong, just different enough to need a translator. If your kid is lucky you'll stumble upon this book and learn about how your kid sees the world: what they notice, what they don't, what makes sense to them, and what doesn't.It's a guidebook for those who love Aspies and want to help navigate them through life without shaming them, or making them feel bad about how they were born. My kid is much happier with a family who understands him and can help him make connections and who can intelligently explain how he's different to other people who haven't read this book. God bless Tony Attwood.I buy this again and again to give away. It's that important.

I don't feel Theory of Mind adequately or fairly describes what is really going on with Aspergers. Certainly there are social difficulties, but to say that people with Aspergers, especially adults, don't understand that other people have minds and emotions is just untrue, and that's what the most rigid proponents of Theory of Mind are still trying to assert. Proponents of Theory of Mind may even assert the person with Aspergers lacks emotions or caring. While I don't feel this author is going to these extremes, enough of the proponents of Theory of Mind have done so in a way that is deeply flawed and discriminatory against people with Aspergers. Including ToM in this book dilutes what is otherwise a very compassionate tone.Learning how to improve social abilities can only be possible for people who do, in fact, realize that they and other people have varied thoughts and emotions. What people with Aspergers have trouble with is intuiting social communication, but that can happen to anyone in specific situations - such as traveling to a very different culture. I would have felt this book was much stronger if the author took the time to acknowledge there is debate around this issue in the community.

It is wonderful to know that I am not mad. That I am just uncoordinated and not trying to hurt myself. That my escape into imagination doesn't mean that I am insane.This book explained all the things I just couldn't understand about who I am. It also explained why other people respond to me the way they do. My mother didn't reject me, she thought it was her fault I was different. And now I understand that I don't have to be afraid all the time.There is lots more to read and take on board. I wish my parents had known about this book when I was young. Thank you Tony Attwood for writing this book.

I read this book in two days flat. It's a full sized textbook type of book (and anyone who has gone to college knows that textbooks can sell for up to and over $100 - this has as much info as a textbook IMO but at under $20 is just an absolute steal) but I couldn't put it down. This truly should be required reading for anyone with Asperger's, anyone with a familyl member with Asperger's, anyone who ever thinks they might ever know someone who might have Asperger's, and certainly every single psychologist and teacher, social worker and child care provider should take the time to read. I would say this was the single most important item I have read or viewed among a sea of information on the internet, in TED Talks, on television, etc. I cannot possibly recommend it enough. I highlighted the things which I related to, and/or which I found particularly enlightening and when I was done I realized that quite literally more than 85% of the book is covered in yellow highlighter. It is just that good. Don't waffle on this purchase, just do it. I can't imagine anyone regretting it. The author could probably offer a money back guarantee and never shell out a dime, it's that good.

I was recently diagnosed with ASD, and bought 3 copies of this book to loan to friends/family as I slowly tell them of my diagnosis. I've read many different books on autism/asperger's, and this is by far the best. Tony Attwood explains the condition in a way that is easy to understand and approachable even for non-experts or people who had never heard of the condition before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is recently diagnosed, thinks they might have it, has friends or family on the spectrum, or is just interested in it and wants to learn more about it.

This book is not only a story on freediving, where author excels, it is about his never ending search for perfection, better performances, greater depths, better understanding of his self, mind and body.Definitely not only for freediving enthusiasts but for anyone.Provides very detailed description of authors journey from childhood to becoming one of greats in the demanding discipline of freediving, achieving multiple world champion titles and many records.I personally looked forward to this book as I am interested in freediving but, maybe surprisingly, it is not flat story, definitely not only about freediving, but I guess will be interesting for many. And may help many to understand what freediving is about, dispel many myths and misconceptions.Describes struggles to achieve performances, meet expectations, problems with timing ones form for an event or record attempt, shows that an improvement of a single meter in depth (one percent of the previous record) is much more that it might seem. Provides honest description of all the things involved in achieving great goals, that even a great athlete has a private life and how such related troubles may affect seemingly given performances.This book also surprised me in its language, style and how well written it is, as a bonus serves as a definitive proof that freediving/apnea need not cause damage to ones brain. Rather the opposite, author is a living proof that many deep and extended dives need not damage ones brain and that spiritual journey in freediving may expand thought processes.PS, this is a second version of my hasty review posted immediately after finishing the book yesterday ... first version was also very positive but too brief (not that this one can do justice but my written English is sadly lacking ;-) )

This book had an odd effect on me. I wasn't quite pleased with it as I read, yet I found myself quoting from the book during the days I was reading it. There were many interesting thoughts, and many things I didn't know about freediving. It was an enjoyable book to read.Random thoughts: Trubridge can be self-absorbed to the point you don't always like him, but a certain single-mindedness is necessary to achieve at his level. There are many references to yoga and related spiritual practices, but every time you think he's drifting off into fantasy land, he brings it back to a practical benefit in his sport. This is the second freediving-related book I have read (after Deep by James Nestor) and I still learned a lot from this one. It's not a how-to book by any means, but that's okay. I like to spend time under the water, but I have zero interest in pushing it to the point that blackouts are normal.One negative for me was his descriptions of spearfishing. I eat fish often, but for someone who loves the ocean he seems to revel a bit too much in taking large numbers of reef fish without concern for where they fit into the ecosystem. To be fair, he may be more selective than I know and important details may have been edited out, but I can only see what actually got printed.

You don’t have to know anything about Freediving to enjoy this remarkable story of a hero’s journey.Honest, poetic, insightful, spiritual.I couldn’t put it down.The beautiful descriptions of the underwater world, his mastery over physical mind/body and grappling with perfection, as well as his struggles on terra firma with his personal life. All together create a very rich story.The authors scientific mind helps to explain in easy descriptive ways the methodology of Freediving that even a novice to the sport can understand. But the reader also learns of the frequent disappointments and uncontrollable circumstances that can rob a diver of a successful dive.A beautifully written, informative and entertaining story.

Although not a diver myself this book was really good. It was exiting and not only about the meters, records or technical stuff but about where we all come from and life in general.

I have heard that the secret to life it to become very, very good at something that is very, very, hard to do. William has achieved this as a freediver.He was interviewed by Kim Hill on Radio New Zealand and I was impressed by his story and how articulate he is.I asked for the book for Christmas and finished it this morning. The book is equally as intriguing as the interview was.I had heard of William's father who is very well known lighting designer, but was not aware of his son's story. It reminded me of watching the movie "The Big Blue." I've told my young children they need to read this book as it is about one man's strategies to find a focus, conquer fear and handle set backs. The insights into William's struggles to deal with a marriage that unravelled were one-sided, but handled with maturity and respect.A well written, great read. I also liked that William mentioned on his FB page that The Onion reviewed the book and said it was 'abysmal!' Perhaps a back-handed compliment meaning - very deep.
