This helped my wife and I get through Paris and enhanced our trip tenfolds. Our pronunciation was probably way off but our attempts at speaking french were greatly appreciated by the locals. I accepted that we would never blend in as Parisians but this book prevented us from being "big fat stupid American tourist."

This really came in handy for someone who knew ZERO French. Most people will speak English after you make even a small attempt at trying to speak to them in their language and this sure helps. We flew from the US so I used the time to study a little bit and this book made it pretty darn easy for me to polish up on a few phrases on the way over. ****Note to self-learn a foreign language.

Super helpful reference book for a week trip to France. Small, so it fits in the pocket. Knowing zero French, it contained most of what I needed for a simple vacation. Pronunciation, common phrases you'd use/hear, good section regarding food/menus, small but useful French-to-English and English-to-French sections. I've used the Lonely Planet pocket phrasebooks for multiple languages, finding their size and usefulness to be effective.

This is even better than I expected. It's tiny, it has really almost everything you can think of you'd need to say to non-English speaking strangers, and it has a super-useful dictionary for anything else. The food guide is awesome! For those who complained about the pronunciation guide: the English is meant to be British English, in which case it's spot-on. I'm a French speaker & picked this up for my non-Francophone boyfriend for our upcoming trip to Paris so I don't have to worry in case we get separated. :)

My husband is fluent in French and I am able to understand and speak some. It was clear to both of us that pronunciation of many words was just plain wrong. I threw the book out!

I recently spent two months studying in France. My significant other accompanied me, but hardly new a sentence beyond, "Bonjour," "Je ne sais pas," or "je parle un petit peu de francais." We were staying in Angers, a small town that has almost zero English spoken, so I purchased this book for him in hopes he'd be able to get by easily enough when I wasn't around to translate.The book is amazing, he loved it. Small enough to fit in his pocket, had a phonetic pronunciation guide, color coded and had everything he needed. Worked terrifically when at the market, ordering food, and even at the pharmacy. He was able to communicate with ease and without embarrassment.Highly recommend for anyone traveling to France.

A great French phrasebook and dictionary. Whether you're just starting to learn French, brushing up, or you're going to Paris and you want one book to carry around this is it.It is helpfully organized into different parts (practical/ getting around, social, safe travel, food, the basics, etc) so you can hone your learning to one section before moving on. The book itself is small enough to carry while strolling down the Champs-Élysées or walking up the stairs of the Eiffel Tower. It is constructed well enough so it's not going to fall apart after a week or two of being tossed in/ out of bags. The dictionary is good but obviously doesn't have every word in it.

In the age of IPhone/Droid translator apps, you might think there's little need for a hard copy language guide. In preparing for a September trip to France, I wanted to gain a basic knowledge of common phrases to avoid the awkwardness of pulling out a Droid for something as simple as ordering a cup of coffee and a croissant. The Lonely Planet guide fits the bill perfectly, particulary with the clear pronunciation breakdown for each phrase. Small enough to carry around in the months before your trip for study breaks. Well worth it.

I was privileged to be in an audience when Jackie spoke, then bought the book to read the whole story. Jackie is an amazing person, a very cute and funny lady that you would love to have as a friend. Her book is engrossing. I've read it several times and loaned my copy to several friends. Well written, inspiring, life-affirming...so many words come to mind but none does justice to the book. If you lived in the eighties, you'll remember terrorism is not a new thing, and you'll remember this event as it happened. To get the story from the point of view of a woman who was not only there, but was one of the five shot at point blank range and then thrown down the stairs from the plane as dead gives rare and moving insight. Jackie is amazing, and a beautiful person inside and out. You can't help but feel God chose her to deliver the message contained in the book. Highly recommend.

I saw Jackie at a seminar before her book was even finished or titled. She gave us a hint of what the book was probably going to be named. I wrote that in my PDA so I could watch for it when it came out as I was so captivated by Jackie's amazing story. She is an wonderful speaker as well as writer. Until most of the seminar was over, I had not realized Jackie was as vision impaired as she is. She looked around the room, gestured, and looked into the audience and smiled at us as if she could see us(.Unfortunately,afire alarm inadvertently went off at the convention site where the seminar was being held. Jackie was a real trooper and just followed along with the assistance of a few people). IT was not a surprise that her book was so well written. I already had her story memorized yet when I was reading her book as if I didn't know anything about it, I was pleased to see how well she set the scene for the whole climatic event that took place that day. I guarantee this story will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more, not for the lack of information, because Jackie did an exceptional job in putting this horrifyinh event, along with her most remarkable journey into a book that isn't the size of an encyclopedia. She is a n inspiration that will make you thankful for your life and thankful you haven't had to face anything like this in your life time. I have purchased 8 copies of her books because I have told so many people about her story,that they wantto borrow my book. I won't risk losing my copy, so they each get their own. I would suggest you do the same, befor I buy all of them up.

This book is a very powerful, true story of an amazing human courage to survive and the ability to forgive horrible treatment. It's very readable and very gripping!

I saw Jackie Pflug speak at a luncheon and I knew I had to buy her book. Her speech was the most inspirational I have ever heard and I have been a "junkie" of inspirational speeches. The book did not disappoint. There is something here for everyone -- a riveting adventure story as she gives a moment by moment account of the hijacking. There is inspiration in her telling of her recovery and the goals she set for herself. Jackie explains her philosophy and spirituality in a way that would be consistent with most any relious belief-- or non belief. Most of all, you will learn to appreciate every single day. This is not a sappy "survivor" account but a real life experience that happened to change the author's life. This book will give you the courage to face your obstacle's. It is on my gift list for everyone I know.

I just heard Jackie Pflug speak at an event yesterday and she was amazing. Her incredible story and her determination to recover and remain positive truly are an inspiration. I had to get her book after hearing her story and she really explains why you shouldn't sweat the small stuff in life. She was simply amazing and blew me away.

This is an incredible first person account of a woman who was the selected target of terrorists on an Egypt Air Flight because she was holding an American Passport. She was taken outside of the plane onto the top of the stairs and was shot in the head. Her body fell down the stairs onto the tarmack and she was left there for dead. People picking up her body unexpectedly discovered she was alive and rushed her to a hospital. The remainder of the story is of her amazing recovery coupled with personal tragedy and overcoming obstacles to teach herself to read again(she was able to do this based on her special education background/experience) in spite of her prognosis.

I picked this up after seeing it in my inbox of recommended reads. While I do appreciate the odd paranormal romance, this was more silly than romance. Way too many plot holes and inconsistencies even for a romance fluff piece. After a thousand years, why would the love interest still be talking like a Viking gone a roaming. I don't get the whole "sin scent" of someone Thinking of committing a sin vs actual mortal sin. The bad guys are sort of a joke. If you are going to make political or religious commentary in a paranormal romance either make sure it's accurate, or at least not offensive. I didn't like it, but I have read worse. However I will not be reading this again or buying more of this series.

There were a lot of points in this story that left me conflicted. I didn't feel like the premise of Viking vampire angels was particularly well explained. There is an explanation, but I was never truly able to suspend my disbelief enough to fully buy into the concept. It is different from any other paranormal fiction that I've read. As far as the romance aspect of the story, this is one of the best written love stories that I've had the pleasure of reading. I arrived at my rating of 4 stars as an average. As a romance novel, I would give it 5 stars. As for the paranormal aspect, I would award 3 stars. So, overall, I split the difference and give it 4 stars. I enjoyed it and considered it worth the $0.99 I paid for it. I am not; however, sure that I'm willing to pay the much increased price to continue reading the series.

As always Sandra Hill delivers in her books especially when it comes to the VIKs. I laughed, I cried, I got mad, I sighed....well, I went through the gamut of emotions with this book. I cheered for Vikar and Alex. Vicar whose sign is pride is brought down a peg or two from the willful and independent Alex who has traveled to Transylvania, PA for what she believes to be an interview with Lord Vikar. Little does she when she gets to the "castle" that her life will change, as well as her heart. Alex had suffered tragedy prior to coming to Transylvania and in the midst of her suffering she contemplates committing a sin and possibly losing her soulless. It us up to Vikar, as a Vangel to save her soul, and perhaps her heart in the process.

Another rollicking chapter to the continuing saga of Vampire Angels created by the fertile mind of Sandra Hill to delight and entertain her many followers. Each condemned to eternal damnation because of their thorough corruption by one of the seven deadly sins, these Viking brothers are given one last chance by God, and aided by the Archangel Mchael, to redeem their souls from Hell. They are returned to Earth as Vampire Angels to fight the minions of Satan or Lucifer known as Lucipyres. Only by destroying Satan's minions and freeing the innocents of Earth from their corrupt influence will the brothers gain their eternal freedom from Hell. However, the brothers are not free from sin's temptation themselves and often fall prey to their own "deadly" sin and find themselves punished with serving a much longer term than prior to their regression!! Another Sandra Hill comic relief book that will delight your funny bone as well as your romantic senses. I can highly recommend all the books in this series for a great reading experience!!

Sandra Hill writes about Vikings. Usually historical romances. So when she chose to write a PNR it had to have Vikings right?Kiss of Pride tells the story of Vikar Sigurdsson. He and his brothers are being punished as they've each been singularly attached to one of the seven deadly sins. For Vikar it is pride. As punishment they've been turned into vangels (vampire/angels) to do good and to fight Lucifer's vampires (lucipires) whose goal was to collect the souls of sinners before they had a change to repent.Alexandra Kelly is a reporter who has lost her faith. Her estranged husband and her daughter were killed by cartel mobsters and she is angry. She is considering mortal revenge against those that killed her daughter which makes her ripe for reaping by the lucipires. Archangel Michael thinks she can be saved and arranges for her to meet Vikar.I think this series is very ambitious and if anyone can pull it off Ms. Hill can. I enjoyed the book but as with every first book in a series there is a lot of world building which in this case is so convoluted as to be distracting. I had the same problem with Gena Showalters Lords of the Underworld series but came to love them all. I will definitely be checking out the next installment.

This is the first of the DEADLY ANGELS books. It is about Vikar, a vangel (vampire/angel) who, along with his brothers, fight demons from hell, and Alex, a journalist sent to do a story about him.I thought that the story was okay, but I found Alex to be a little annoying at times and I really didn't care for Vikar. He was too domineering. Also, I really had a problem with the fact that he would force Alex to do things she didn't want to do even if he thought it was for her own good. Those situations really put me off and ruin a book for me.I did like the secondary characters though, so I will give the second book a shot. Hopefully the H/H will be more tolerable.

I wanted love this series because Vikings and vampires, great. But I struggled with the writing. The torture sense with Jasper were gratuitous both for the reader and the narrative. Jasper and his minions are a side issue that is very unresolved. This was the frustrating part. The lack of connection between the parts. I found the ending too trite.

This book is ridiculous. The speech and the thought are just awful (and I'm not even talking about the Viking speak!). Alex (a modern woman) makes me weep on behalf of females. Vikar gets a little more leeway. But only a little. He's lived for over a thousand years, and even though there was time travel involved in that, I would expect some modernization, but he still thinks and acts like a Viking. Fine. I can deal with that.And yet...It was kind of fun. If you're in the right mood for it. Otherwise you'll probably be annoyed by it.Will I be reading the rest of the books in the series? Yeah.

That is until I flipped through the pages of this remarkable book by Connie Weis, Extreme Brownies, 50 Recipes for the Most Over the Top Treats Ever. Fifty. Over the top. And she is not kidding. This book can turn even the most disinterested brownie eater into one filled with passion. Get the mop ready, because turning the pages of this book, chock full of jump-off-the-page color photos is going to make you drool, and turn you into both brownie lover and brownie chef extraordinaire.With tastes for all palates, this book is sure to please. As a lover of malted milk balls, I was thrilled to see the recipe for Whopping Malted Milk Ball Brownies with their malted milk ball glaze, malted milk ball garnish, and milk chocolate drizzle. One taste and I was in absolute heaven. Malted Milk Balls not your thing? How about Peanut Butter Cup Brownies loaded with chunks of peanut butter cups in every bite. The book is as addicting as are the brownies. Even non-chocolate lovers (Is there such a thing?) will find something to love here. There are a baker's dozen recipes for Blondies, think Caramel Crispie, White Chocolate Raspberry, and Lemon Mascarpone, to name but a few. I found myself trying a new recipe weekly, equally pleased with every one. Weis, a confirmed chocoholic, asserts that "extreme" doesn't equal difficult, and she is right. The instructions are ample, clear, and concise, allowing even the novice cook to whip up a beautiful batch of eye-popping brownies. If brownies studded with extra ingredients does not appeal, try the PMS Brownies. This simple recipe yields a dense, sinfully chocolate brownie that will have your eyes rolling back into your head.If you've ever had the experience of following a recipe exactly as written and still coming out with less than satisfactory results, the problem may lie in your choice of ingredients. Weis discusses ingredients at the beginning of the book, even going so far as to list brand names; I really appreciated that. There is a section on equipment necessary for creating the perfect brownie, as well as detailed steps on how to remove the uncut brownies from the pan in one "slab" to allow for bakery shop perfection when slicing, packaging, and shipping. For starters, this book is serious eye candy...pun intended. It certainly has a wealth of extreme brownie and blondie recipes. But lets get to the point...how do they taste? So far, I have made two recipes from this book: the milk chocolate macadamia nut brownies, and the snickering brownies.For the milk chocolate mac brownies, I couldn't find the Mauna Loa chocolate covered mac nuts, and I didn't feel like ordering them. So I substituted plain roasted macadamia nuts. Otherwise I followed the recipe as given. My 69-year-old mother said, "This is the best brownie I have ever had." Let me tell you, my family has a serious sweet tooth. That is really saying something.But one recipe success could be a fluke, right? So I made the snickering brownies. They might be the best brownie I'VE ever had. Every layer is really tasty...together it is really a snickers bar on top of a brownie. It was a bit time consuming to make, but nothing about it was difficult. Connie gives very clear, concise directions. I was super impressed when I took my out of the pan, cut them up, and saw that they looked exactly like the picture! Awesome!Something about her brownie base recipes...they are seriously fudgy but still with a dense cake texture. Indescribably good. If you think you may make brownies even once in a while, BUY THIS BOOK. You won't be sorry.

I've made two recipes so far (the PM brownies and the caramel-stuffed sea salt brownies), both turning out divine!! I love how she includes weight amounts because I've been pining to make use of my scale, and having these accurate measurements also help clean up. It's also great how specific equipment and brands of ingredients she uses are listed, so there is NO question left in the mind for if the right pan or chocolate is being used to match hers.The texture of these brownies surprised me when I first made the PM brownies--they are of high quality, the kind that if you walked into a chocolatier shop and bought, wouldn't be disappointed with. My boyfriend, his family, and my friends and coworkers absolutely loved them. They are truly heavenly!Because the recipes so far have turned out so well, I'm leaving this as a five star. However, one thing that I would have appreciated would be if estimated times for prepping and baking were included. I have to do extra prep before even selecting a recipe to make sure I even have the time (they can be pretty time consuming, especially if you're getting eggs to room temperature like she instructs). Another minor thing would be it would have been nice if there was a picture for each recipe. Most of them do have a picture, but towards the ends a lot of them are just recipes with no pictures. How much more expensive would it have been to print a couple of more color pages with pictures? I would have been more to get them, anyway. They are such great motivational tools as well to make the recipes!

I've owned a bakery for years and I'm completely in love with this book. I often take the base recipe and create my own flavors and they never disappoint anyone. Have been told by many that they are the best brownies that they have ever had. Yes not cheap to make but worth it. Quality ingredients equal great products always. As a professional I know first hand that you don't buy the cheapest butter when baking-ever. If you want these to turn out rich and fudgy buy high quality butter please!!!! Cheap butter has a high water content! I hope this helps. Happy baking

I've made five recipes from this book so far, and every single one of them have been clear winners. These are the kinds of brownies that make people gasp and declare them to be the best brownies they've ever had in their lives.I do recommend a -small- metal offset spatula for spreading batter and toppings with these recipes. The medium offset spatula I usually use for cakes is awkward to fit into the size of pan the author calls for.

If youre going for your CNA this has everything! Im currently studying for my CNA and i know ill get my state test aced the first time!!! This has very detailed pictures explaining what do to, how to roll them over and so on. Very glad i bought this book!

I used Mosby's Textbook for Nursing Assistants over twenty years at a high school nursing program. When it came time to reorder new books, my colleague and I would review other nursing assistant text books. No other publication came close to identifying clearly the salient points of skill procedures, patent dignity, cleanliness and safety than Shella Sorrento's nursing assistant text books.

This amazing book is a must have for any healthcare professional. Very easy to read and to understand, loaded with photos and illustrations, it gives step-by-step instructions on over 100 healthcare procedures. With over 800 pages, a glossary section and a CD-ROM, The MOSBY'S TEXTBOOK FOR NURSING ASSISTANTS is indeed an excellent guidance system for the CNA and the regular person taking care of another. As a NURSING ASSISTANT, this very important book will ever be my point of reference.This latest edition is well updated with everything pertaining to basic and intermediate healthcare.Most highly recommend to anyone who is in this field or contemplating healthcare as a career.

The book is perfect! No tears or writing in it. It arrived very fast and packaging was great! Thank you!

Needed it for school

While you will learn all you need for the "written" test ( it's actually on computer), the bookdoesn't help to give you a heads up on the Skills test, taken the same day. A listing of all thesteps involved in each one, with a list of supplies needed for each would have been good.There is a CD that comes with the text that purportedly has such but the audio/visual partleaves out a lot and I found myself printing out the text for each skill from the CD. I took asix-week intensive course with only five weeks of classes (M - TH), only half of which dealtwith the skills. Ten classes, three hours each, with eight other students to learn all the 22skills was just not enough time to get the practice necessary and while my test is still morethan 3 weeks away I feel shaky on the Skills. Six days of practicum at a hospital was somewhathelpful, but the practice there while basically the same, was different enough from what thestate test calls for as to confuse and frustrate this student. Again, the text is good as far as itgoes but should give fair warning ( and advice) on the, to my mind, more important issue ofpreparing for the practice (skills): eg. schedule study sessions with your fellow students, allwhose phone numbers you have, using the classroom on campus (with permission and availabilitysecured) to practice the skills!

The book is great! The only reason I'm giving the workbook 3 stars is because the person who made the workbook did not think ahead of time and made all the pages printed on front and back. So when you go to turn in a chapter for instance chapter 1..the first page of chapter two will be in the back of chapter 1s last page. It's a problem when you have to turn these pages in because then you're missing pages from certain chapters.

I bought this book to read with my mentor. I was about to start a new role, and thought that it would be helpful. There are sections of this book that work for everyone, but the majority of it is aimed at corporate america. If you work for a non-profit or the government (where things happen slower), this is probably not the book for you.

This is a really useful book filled with sage advice for anyone assuming a leadership position, particularly as a former outsider to the organization. It's filled with reminders that you don't walk in with "the answer," that instead winning the trust and respect of your cohorts is a learning process that you should begin with great intensity. The first half of the book relates directly to someone who is assuming a management role, the next quarter of the book is about what to do as a new employee serving under a boss or bosses (perhaps as a mid-level manager). The last bit of the book gives a brief introduction to strategic thinking and the book concludes with questions to ask yourself (and your family) in evaluating your transition. It is applicable to any firm, church, non-profit, and even (mostly) the government.Here's a summary of the points I gleaned: - Establish your integrity in first 30 days. - Learn all you can about the organization, put on your "historian" hat. - Don't suggest changes without examining what has been done previously. - Silence is not accession. - Meet with everyone in the organization to evaluate their expectations. Ask them what they think you should focus on. - Ask same questions of all so no one treated different and you have a cross-section. - Look for "early wins," low-hanging fruit of improvements you can make or other things to boost morale.Dealing with your boss in the first 30 days: - Be proactive, assume it's on your shoulders to build the relationship and get the support you need. - Schedule meetings to discuss expectations, evaluations, and personal development. - Figure out what would give your boss "early wins." Make his priorities your priorities. - Be proactive in doing things that will allow your boss to hear from people he trusts that you're a good worker. - Don't bring your boss bad news early, at least without bringing good news too. - Don't assume he will change. He has a style, foibles, accept them and work around then and move on. You can learn a lot from a bad boss, and you will likely have many. - Examine how others relate to your boss and how he responds.Strategy - Begin figuring out who you need to move off your team immediately, whose roles need to change, and who you need to evaluate further. - Think strategically. After your first 90 days you should be able to present a plan that is actionable. - Evaluate the vision of the organization, its values, and use SWOT analysis.Ask yourself feedback questions every week. - What isn't going well. Why? What can you change? - What are you least happy about. What can you change about it? - What meeting troubled you the most? "" - What conflict needs to be most resolved? ""Family also has to be considered. How is your new role and time commitment affecting your family? Was the move worth it?The author doesn't state it like this, but focus on doing what's best next.I give this book 4.5 stars out of 5. I highly recommend it.

I was so excited to find a book about the first 90 days at a new job since I just started my new job. Too bad this book was pretty worthless. I found the writing sexist - all the males were doing these great things and about the only time the writer used the female pronoun it was about a bad employee. I could have over looked that if the advice was any good. One scenario given was to suggest to play managers off each other until one of the them quits so you can replace them with who you want. That is advice for creating a toxic workplace.

I have this title on Kindle, and the issues with it are typical of why I won't buy more Kindle books.One of the two strongest issues is that graphics are unreadable. There are simple tables -- grids of information -- in the book which render at a fixed size. I can't zoom them, they don't get larger or smaller when I change fonts. They're in a different color and font, and I can't read them. They're important tables, and that they're missing or unreadable diminishes the value of this book. Other titles (the technical titles that I'm most likely to read, in fact) would be completely useless if tables, graphs, and charts in them were rendered so poorly.The other issue are the footnotes. The authors have thoughtfully added footontes the clarify some of their thoughts and reference some of the claims they make. The footnotes are hyperlinks. The Kindle UI is awful; it takes many presses to invoke the hyperlink. (Sometimes, it'll highlight a word to offer a definition. Other times, it will highlight a passage and expect me to add a note or annotation. In other instances, poking the hyperlink will turn the page. In extreme situations, I'm simply unable to invoke the hyperlink becuase of these issues.)When I do invoke the hyperlink, it takes me further into the book where the page with the footnote is rendered. This is disruptive because now the Kindle thinks my current, and therefore my furthest position -- is much deeper into the text than it really is. It makes synchronization very difficult. Reverting to the page which has the hyperlinked footnote source is dangerous. If I press the back arrow, I'm fine. If I miss the back arrow and press "home", I end up back at the carousel and I can't return to the spot I was reading where I clicked the footnote hyperlink.Issues like this are extremely disruptive to the reading process and terrible for such mature devices -- Amazon has been shipping Kindles for more than five years, yet such simple user interface issues still remain.I regret buying this title on the Kindle because it depends on tables and footnotes. The Kindle is usually okay for reading fiction, but non-fiction books that rely on commonly applied typesetting features that I've described are hobbled by these user interface issues.The content of this book itself is very helpful; five stars. I knock off two stars for the poor presentation. I'm not convinced the plan the book establishes can be carried out in ninety days, but the points are all salient. Some of them would be served by clearer examples and deeper advice; the message can be clear but the mechanism for realizing the goal might be more difficult for some readers than the author anticipates.

First shared with me by my new boss, I quickly realized the approach and framework were going to be very useful and purchased my own anniversary copy. I'm 6 weeks into my transition as a senior executive at a new org and I'm finding the process very helpful. From the time you accept your position to crafting a 30-60-90 day plan I highly recommend for all transitioning executives and new managers.

This book helped me get my next job. After getting caught flat footed in an interview on what is your 90 day plan, I purchased and read this book. While reading it the next opportunity came along and in the interview process I not only had a better answer, I was able to answer from the position of someone who was already onboarding. I've used it and in my first couple of months have been amazing impacting revenue, debt, customer and employee satisfaction out of the gates. An easy read and a great prep for the next opportunity you are facing.
